The maximum adsorption/desorption conditions and the adsorption mechanism of globular proteins to vaccine adjuvants were determined. The maximum adsorption ratio of protein to the $Al^{3+}$ content of aluminum oxyhydroxide and the optimal adsorption pH are 2:1 (${\mu}g:{\mu}g$) for bovine serum albumin (BSA) at pH 6.0 and 2.5:1 (${\mu}g:{\mu}g$) for immunoglobulin G (IgG) at pH 7.0, respectively. The maximum adsorption ratio onto aluminum phosphate gel was 1.5:1 (${\mu}g$ Protein:${\mu}g$$Al^{3+}$) at pH 5.0 for both BSA and IgG. Adsorption of the native globular proteins, BSA and IgG, to aluminum oxyhydroxide and aluminum phosphate gel was reversible as a function of pH. Complete desorption of these proteins from aluminum phosphate gel was observed at alkaline pH, whereas only 80~90% removal from aluminum oxyhydroxide was achieved with alkaline pH and 50 mM phosphate buffer. We conclude that electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions between the native proteins and adjuvants are important binding mechanisms for adsorption, and that the surface charge of the protein and the colloid components control the maximum adsorption conditions.
In this study, the adsorption of toxic pollutants onto cetyltrimethylammonium kaolin (CTAB-Kaolin) is investigated. The organo-kaolin is synthesized by exchanging cetyltrimethylammonium cations (CTAB) with inorganic ions on the surface of kaolin. The chemical analysis, the structural and textural properties of kaolin and CTAB-kaolin were investigated using elemental analysis, FTIR, SEM and adsorption of nitrogen at $-196^{\circ}C$. The kinetic adsorption and adsorption capacity of the organo-kaolin towards o-xylene, phenol and Cu(II) ion from aqueous solution was investigated. The kinetic adsorption data of o-xylene, phenol and Cu(II) are in agreement with a second order model. The equilibrium adsorption data were found to fit Langmuir equation. The uptake of o-xylene and phenol from their aqueous solution by kaolin, CTAB-kaolin and activated carbon proceed via physisorption. The removal of Cu(II) ion from water depends on the surface properties of the adsorbent. Onto kaolin, the Cu(II) ions are adsorbed through cation exchange with $Na^+$. For CTAB-kaolin, Cu(II) ions are mainly adsorbed via electrostatic attraction with the counter ions in the electric double layer ($Br^-$), via ion pairing, Cu(II) ions removal by the activated carbon is probably related to the carbon-oxygen groups particularly those of acid type. The adsorption capacities of CTAB-kaolin for the investigated adsorbates are considerably higher compared with those of unmodified kaolin. However, the adsorption capacities of the activated carbons are by far higher than those determined for CTAB-kaolin.
Manufacturing process of OLED contains adsorption-desorption process of glass substrate. There are several adsorption methods of glass substrate such as atmospheric pressure, vacuum and electrostatic adsorption. However, these methods are very complex to connect system. Therefore, the adsorption method using silicone rubber based sticking chuck was proposed in this study. Three types of silicone rubbers having 0, 19.3 and 32.2 wt% of fluorine were used and their mechanical properties, surface energies and adsorption properties were examined. According to the results ${\sigma}_{300}$ and hardness increased with increasing fluorine contents, but elongation was decreased. Also, fluorosilicone rubber containing 32.2 wt% of fluorine showed the lowest surface tension, among three types of rubber and resulted in the highest initial tack with glass substrate. After the adsorption-desorption test of 300,000 cycles was performed, the adsorption force of S-1 (silicone rubber) decreased largely from 2.34 to 0.73 MPa. However, the S-3 (fluorosilicone rubber having 32.2 wt%. of fluorine) decreased only from 3.15 to 2.24 MPa. From this study, we obtained the valuable equations related to long term durability of silicone based sticking chuck. Finally the transfer of silicone rubber to glass substrate with the adsorption-desorption process was not occurred and this phenomenon was examined by UV-Visible spectroscopy.
The hydroxyapatite(HAp) for the present study was prepared with the wastewater sludge from semiconductor fabrication process and it was crystallized in an electric furnace for 30 min at 90$0^{\circ}C$. The adsorption characteristics of HAp for phosphate ion in aqueous solution has been investigated. The adsorbed ratio of phosphate ion for HAp were investigated according to the reaction time, amount of HAp, concentration of standard solution, pH of solution, and influence of concomitant ions. The amount of adsorbed phosphate ion decreased with the increase of pH due to the mutual electrostatic repulsion between adsorbed phosphate ions and competitive adsorption between phosphate ion and OH- ion in aqueous solution. The maxium amount of the adsorption equilibrium for phosphate ion was about 24 mg/g of HAp. The HAp would likely to be a possible adsorbent for the removal of phosphate ion in the waste water.
This study was carried out to investigate the adsorption characteristics of cationic starches onto BKP, BCTMP and talc. Concentration of the unadsorbed cationic starch contained in the supernatant of the pulp or talc slurries was determined using a spectoscopy method and the adsorption isotherm of cationc starch was constructed. When the equilibrium concentration of the cationic starch was low, almost complete adsorption of the starch onto BKP and BCTMP was observed. This indicates that electrostatic attraction is the main driving force for the adsorption of cationc starches onto pulps. BCTMP adsorbed greater amount of cationic starches than BKP since it contained more anionc functional groups on its surface. The adsorption amount of the cationic starch increased as the cationicity of the starches decreased. Surface charge density of the pulp and starch adsorption increased as the pH of the pulp slurry increased. Adsorption amount of the cationic starch onto talc was lower than that onto the pulp due to its low charge density and hydrophobic surface property.
This work presents the adsorption capability of green tea and ginseng leaves to adsorb heavy metals such as Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(II) in aqueous solution. FT-IR analysis indicates the presence of oxygen containing functional groups (carboxyl groups) in two kinds of leaves. High pH condition was favorable to the adsorption of heavy metal ions due to the enhanced electrostatic attraction and the precipitation reaction of metal ions. The adsorption of Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(II) reached equilibrium within 10 min, achieving high removal efficiencies of 80.3-97.5%. The adsorption kinetics data of heavy metal ions were fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum adsorption amounts of Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(II) ions were 8, 3.5, and 15 mg/g, respectively, in the initial concentration range from 0.15 to 0.75 mM. Based on the fitting data obtained from isotherm models, heavy metal adsorption by green tea and ginseng leaves could occur via multi-layer sorption.
Adsorption kinetics of aqueous ferric ion ($Fe^{3+}$) onto bio-natural rice grains (BRG) have been studied in a batch system. The influence of contact time (0-180 minutes), the dosage of BRG adsorbent (10, 20, 40, and $60gL^{-1}$), and ambient temperature (27, 37, 47, and $57^{\circ}C$) for the adsorption system have been reported. The equilibrium time achieved after 20 minutes of adsorption contact time. The maximum removal of ferric ion is 99% by using $60gL^{-1}$ of BRG, $T=37^{\circ}C$, and $50mgL^{-1}$ ferric ion solution. Adsorption kinetic and diffusion models, such as pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, and Weber-Morris intra-particle diffusion model, have been used to describe the adsorption rate and mechanism of the ferric ion onto BRG surface. The sorption data results are fitted by Lagergren pseudo-second order model ($R^2=1.0$). The kinetic parameters, rate constant, and sorption capacities have been calculated. The new information in this study suggests that BRG could adsorb ferric ion from water physiosorption during the first 5 minutes. Afterward, the electrostatic interaction between ferric ion and BGR-surface could take place as a very weak chemisorptions process. Thus, there is no significant change could be noticed in the FTIR spectra after adsorption. I recommend producing BGR as a bio-natural filtering material for removing the ferric ion from water.
Fixed-bed adsorption was adapted to separate phenolic acids from diluted phenolic solution. Break-through curve was obtained by nonlinear curve fitting method, and breakpoint, saturation time, and mass transfer coeffi-cient were calculated . Break point and saturation time were reached slower with $\rho$-coumaric acid than ferulic acid .The p-coumaric acid, having small molecular weight, is suposedly traveled longer pathway in characoal than ferulic acid. Fixed-bed adsorption iwht gallic acid having more hydroxyl functional group than other phenolic acids showed break point arrival and the largest saturation time. This fact means that there was bigger electrostatic affinity between gallic acid and charcoal than between other phenolic acids and charcoal.

Aluminum based metal-organic framework using a di-carboxylate linker succinic acid (Al-SA MOF), are synthesized in water with minimal generation of secondary pollutants. The physicochemical properties of Al-SA MOF were examined, followed by its utility for the adsorption of Acid Black 1 (AB1) in aqueous media. Influences of key parameters such as pH, contact time, initial AB1 concentration, temperature, and selectivity on the adsorption process were assessed. A series of adsorption mechanisms are proposed, which involve electrostatic, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions. These findings suggest that Al-SA MOF is a potent candidate in removing complex azo dyes molecules from aqueous media.
Adsorption of xylans extracted from birchwood and oat spelt on Hw-BKP were analyzed using HPLC. The effect of xylan adsorption on paper properties such as tensile, tear index and brightness was also investigated. The constituents of xylan was analyzed with HPLC after hydrolysis with dilute sulfuric acid. It was shown that xylose was the major constituent and small amounts of glucose and galactose were contained in the xylan samples. Adsorption of xylan on hardwood fibers was evaluated using acid hydrolysis and HPLC techniques. Results showed that the adsorption of negatively charged xylan on the fiber surface was negligible probably because electrostatic repulsion between these two materials. Pretreatment of the fiber with alum increased xylan adsorption. The amount of adsorption increased up to 30 mg/g. With the increase of xylan adsorption both tensile and tear strength of the handsheet increased suggesting xylan can be a very effective strength agents for papermaking. Brightness of the handsheets decreased, however, with the use of xylan.
