  • Black phosphorus (BP) is a potential candidate for an anode in lithium ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity and the large interlayer spacing in the monolayered phosphorene form, allowing for lithium intercalation/deintercalation. In this study, large-scale exfoliation of bulk BP was accomplished using a solution of NaOH and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), yielding phosphorene, which can be assembled into nanoflakes using electrophoretic deposition (EPD). Through the systematic addition of NaOH and subsequent sonication, BP nanoflakes were obtained in high yields by EPD, allowing for the integration of these nanoflakes into an anode in the film state. Anodes with a charge/discharge capacity of 172 mAh/g at a rate of 200 mA/g were obtained, which are promising for battery applications through various post-film treatments.

  • In this paper, the preparation of BSCCO superconducting wire by electrophoretic deposition method and the effect of suspension medium used with various solvent solutions of ethanol and buthanol for electrophoretic deposition were studied. The preheating technique in vacuum system for the superconducting powders coated on Ag wire was also investigated. As a result, it was confirmed that the preheating technique was very useful to remove the influence of remains affected to the surface conditions of superconducting wire. And the adsorbed solvent solution which was existed between and on the deposited particle surfaces was almost disappeared at the treating conditions of about $10^{-3}$ Torr and around $200^{\circ}C$ in bell-jar system. By measurement of 4-point prove method, the critical current density($J_c$) of BSCCO superconducting wire was obtained at the value of more than $10^4\;A/cm^2$ in liquid $N_2$(77 K, 0 T).

  • For fabricating high T$\sub$c/ superconducting deposition film, novel electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technique applied to deposit surface charged particles on metal substrate with only d.c field has been studied. However, the electric properties of superconducting film could not be improved easily by this way, because the particles of EPD film were usually deposited randomly on metal substrate without any directional orientation affected to its critical current density. For the purpose of obtaining partcle orientation on the EPD films, the new method modified by a.c. assisted field to the conventional electrophoresis system was investigated to improve the particle deposition density and to increase the contacting area among the particles with highly oriented particle deposition of BSCCO superconducting film.

  • This study examined carbon layer coating on silicon carbide (SiC) fibers by utilizing solid-state and wet chemistry routes to confer toughness to the fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composites, as an alternative to the conventional pyrolytic carbon (PyC) interphase layer. Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of carbon black nanoparticles using both AC and DC current sources, and the vacuum infiltration of phenolic resin followed by pyrolysis were tested. Because of the use of a liquid phase, the vacuum infiltration resulted in more uniform and denser carbon coating than the EPD routes with solid carbon black particles. Thereafter, vacuum infiltration with controlled variation in phenolic resin concentration, as well as the iterations of infiltration steps, was improvised to produce a homogeneous carbon coating having a thickness of several hundred nanometers on the SiC fiber. Conclusively, it was demonstrated that the carbon coating on the SiC fiber could be achieved using a simpler method than the conventional chemical vapor deposition technique.

Effects of Surface Pretreatment on Deposition and Adhesion of Electrophoretic Paint on AZ31 Mg Alloy

  • In this work, electrophoretic paint (E-paint) was deposited on AZ31 Mg alloy after four different surface pretreatments: knife abrading, SiC paper abrading, deionized (DI) water immersion and NaOH immersion. The deposition process of E-paint was studied by analyses of voltage-time and current-time curves, amount of deposited paint, current efficiency and surface oxide film resistance and the adhesion of E-paint was examined by tape test before and after immersion in DI water for 500 h at $40$^{\circ}C$. It was found that the induction time for the deposition, the amount of deposited paint and the current efficiency are inversely proportional to the resistances of surface films prepared by different surface pretreatment methods. The electrophoretic painting showed longer inductance time, larger amount of deposited paint and higher current efficiency on the highly conducting surfaces, such as knife-abraded and SiC-abraded surfaces than on the less conducting surfaces, such as DI water-immersed and NaOH-immersed samples. Excellent adhesion was observed on the E-paintings deposited onto knife-abraded and SiC-abraded AZ31 Mg alloy samplesSiC-abraded AZ31 Mg alloy samples.

Establishment of Optimum Deposition Time in Electrophoretic Deposition

  • We used the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) process to fabricate a glass composite and investigated the EPD parameters to find the optimum deposition time by understanding the relationship among the process parameters of zeta potential (ZP), pH, deposition yield and saturation point. A binder and a dispersing agent were mixed properly with glass frit ($0.2{\sim}25{\mu}m$, d50=$8.77{\mu}m$) in an ethyl alcohol medium for the preparation of the slurry. The pH and ZP were in an inverse relationship to each other due to the generation of $H_3O^+$ ions with the addition of the dispersing agent in the slurry. The acidic nature of the dispersing agent was resulted in a decrease of the pH and an increase of the ZP. Otherwise, the pH increased with the addition of the glass frit in the slurry because $H_3O^+$ ions were absorbed on the glass frit. Therefore, the $OH^-$ ions correspondingly increased. The saturation point of EPD was strongly correlated with the variation of the pH in the slurry; this is caused by a chemical reaction between the ethyl alcohol and the ions that make up the glass frit. An adjustment of the pH variation and the saturation point in the slurry can be established with respect to the optimum deposition time in the slurry.

  • The electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technique have been applied to fabricating superconducting films and wires in former researches of our Lab. However, the particles of EPD films were usually deposited random1y on the metal substrate, the vertically combined a.c and d.c fields were applied to the EPD electrodes for orienting and densifying the particles of high $T_{c}$ superconducting deposition film on the substrate metal. Therefore, the surface states of EPD films by this combined fields could be oriented and affect to the electric properties increasing of superconducting films. The proposed method modified by a.c. assisted field to the conventional electrophoresis system was suitable to obtain improved properties with particle oriented deposition and densification.

  • Superconductor wire fabricated by electrophoresis showed its critical current density depended on parameters such as applied voltage and deposition time. Substrate and suspension solutions. and its properties are also important parameters. When same optimal parameter and condition was used, deposition density of superconductor film affect directly its critical current density. In this study, therefore, electrophoretic deposition technique was utilized for a densification of YBCO superconducting wire, and researches on electrophoretic suspension solutions and additive were experimentally performed for an improvement of the critical current density of fabricated electrophoretically superconducting wire. The samples fabricated in the solution with the additive, 8 vol.% of 1% PEG(1000), showed the highest critical current density.

  • The electrophoretic deposition method has the advantage of relatively few fabrication facilities and simple process procedure as well as the economical and technical merit of allowing various forms of deposition and easy control of deposition thickness and wire length. A study, especially electric field and additive, on the optimization method to increase the density of particles and uniformity of their orientation have been performed to overcome the cracking and the porosity problems in the fabricated superconductor.
