Design of 10-Gb/s Adaptive Decision Feedback Equalizer with On-Chip Eye-Opening Monitoring (온 칩 아이 오프닝 모니터링을 탑재한 10Gb/s 적응형 Decision Feedback Equalizer 설계)

  • With the increasing demand for high-speed transmission systems, adaptive equalizers have been widely used in receivers to overcome the limited bandwidth of channels. In order to reduce the cost for testing high-speed receiver chips, on-chip eye-opening monitoring (EOM) technique which measures the eye-opening of data waveform inside the chip can be employed. In this paper, a 10-Gb/s adaptive 2-tap look-ahead decision feedback equalizer (DFE) with EOM function is proposed. The proposed EOM circuit can be applied to look-ahead DFEs while existing EOM techniques cannot. The magnitudes of the post-cursors are measured by monitoring the eye of received signal, and coefficients of DFE are calculated using them by proposed adaptation algorithm. The circuit designed in 90nm CMOS technology and the algorithm are verified with post-layout simulation. The DFE core occupies $110{\times}95{\mu}m^2$ and consumes 11mW in 1.2V supply voltage.

Discrimination analysis of new rice, stale rice, and their mixture using an electronic eye (전자눈을 이용한 햅쌀, 묵은쌀 및 이의 혼합쌀 판별 분석)

  • The objective of this study was to develop methods for the discrimination of new and stale rice by using an electronic eye. To develop the discriminant, 107 rice samples produced in the years 2015 and 2016 were investigated. After the rice was treated with guaiacol, oxydol, and p-phenylenediamine reagents, an electronic eye was applied to discriminate between newly harvested rice and rice stored for 1 year. Out of the 4,096 color codes of the electronic eye, 31 color codes were identified for the discrimination of newly harvested rice and rice stored for 1 year. The classification ratio of newly harvested rice and rice stored for 1 year was 100% and the discrimination accuracy for unknown samples was 100%. In a total of 150 mixtures of new rice and stale rice, the discrimination accuracy was between 16.7 and 95.6%, depending on the mixing ratio. This capability of the electronic eye will be useful as a tool for discriminating the production year of rice.

EOG-based User-independent Gaze Recognition using Wavelet Coefficients and Dynamic Positional Warping (웨이블릿 계수와 Dynamic Positional Warping을 통한 EOG기반의 사용자 독립적 시선인식)

  • Writing letters or patterns on a virtual space by moving a person's gaze is called "eye writing," which is a promising tool for various human-computer interface applications. This paper investigates the use of conventional eye writing recognition algorithms for the purpose of user-independent recognition of eye-written characters. Two algorithms are presented to build the user-independent system: eye-written region extraction using wavelet coefficients and template generation. The experimental results of the proposed system demonstrated that with dynamic positional warping, an F1 score of 79.61% was achieved for 12 eye-written patterns, thereby indicating the possibility of user-independent use of eye writing.

  • We present the results of a study of a piezoelectric generator that generates electricity by the application of tension to an element. A device is named "EYE-type generator". The EYE-type generator consists of a rectangular ceramic and two elastic body plates that are attached to upper and lower surfaces of a ceramic. If tension is applied to both ends of the elastic body, that tension is transformed to pressure on the ceramic through a change in the form of the elastic body, causing a piezoelectric effect whereby electricity is generated by the ceramic. This generator is relatively durable because a forces are not applied directly to the ceramic. We examined dependencies of the generator's output characteristics on the size of the ceramic and elastic body. A resonance and output characteristics were analyzed by using a finite element method. The generator was fabricated based on results of the analysis, and this was attached to a frequency-controllable vibrator to measure the output characteristics. The measured results were compared with results of the simulation, and the results pointed to the practicality of the design.

Optimization of optical design for Eye Glass Display using hybrid aspheric lens (Hybrid 비구면 렌즈를 이용한 Eye glass Display용 광학시스템의 최적화)

  • Eye Glass Display (EGD) with microdisplay to realize the virtual display can make the large screen, so virtual image has been developed by using microdisplay panel. This paper shows study of low cost lens design and simulation for microdisplay system with 0.6"LCoS panel. Lens design optimized consider to spherical aberration, astigmatism, distortion, and chromatic aberration. Code V is used and it designed an aspheric lens about exit pupil 6mm, eye relief 20mm and 35 degree of field of view (FOV). With the application this aspheric lens to liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) type's microdisplay, virtual image showed 50 inch at 2m. One side of the aspheric lens was constituted from diffractive optical element (DOE) for the improvement in a performance. It had less than 2.5% of distortion value and modulation transfer function in axial had 20% of resolution with 32 lp/mm spatial frequency. The optical system is suitable for display of 15.6 mm-diagonal with SVGA.

  • This paper introduce the improvement of the pupil motion recognition algorithm in the previously reported "Eye-Motion Communication System using FPGA and OpenCV". It is a system for generalized paralysis and Lou Gehrig patients who can not move their body naturally, recognizing the pupil's motion and selecting the text in the FPGA in real time. In this paper, we improve the speed of motion recognition by minimizing the operation of eye detection function based on the user being general paralysis patient.

  • Eye Glass Display(EGD)의 광학계를 소형, 경량화 하기 위하여 OLED 마이크로 패널과 프리즘 렌즈를 사용하여 설계하였다. 광학계 설계에 사용된 OLED 마이크로 패널은 0.59"크기의 SVGA($800{\times}600$)급이며, 크기는 0.59"이며, 렌즈는 프리즘 렌즈로 설계되었다. 설계된 프리즘 렌즈는 3연으로 구성되었으며, 각 면은 각각 비회전대칭 비구면으로 tilt와 decenter를 사용하여 광학적 성능을 향상시켰다. 설계된 프리즘 렌즈의 화각(FOV)은 $28^{\circ}$, 왜곡수차는 4% 이내이며, 광학계의 해상도를 나타내는 MTF는 공간주파수 30lp/mm에서 full field가 40%이상의 성능을 나타내었다.

Optimum thickness of GaAs top layer in AlGaAs-based 850 nm VCSELs for 56 Gb/s PAM-4 applications

  • We studied the influence of GaAs top-layer thickness on the small-signal modulation response and 56 Gb/s four-level pulse-amplitude modulation eye quality of 850 nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). We considered the proportionality of the gain-saturation coefficient to the photon lifetime. The simulation results that employed the transfer-matrix method and laser rate equations led to the conclusion that the proportionality should be considered for proper explanation of the experimental results. From the obtained optical eyes, we could determine an optimum thickness of the GaAs top layer that rendered the best eye quality of VCSEL. We also compared two results: one result with a fixed gain-saturation coefficient and the other that considered the proportionality. The former result with the constant gain-saturation coefficient demonstrated a better eye quality and a wider optimum range of the GaAs top-layer thickness because the resultant higher damping reduced the relaxation oscillation.

  • In this paper, to propose a new approach to real-time eye tracking. Existing methods of tracking the user's attention to the little I move my head was not going to get bad results for each of the users needed to perform the calibration process. Infrared eye tracking methods proposed lighting and Generalized Regression Neural Networks (GRNN) By using the calibration process, the movement of the head is large, even without the reliable and accurate eye tracking, mapping function was to enable each of the calibration process by the generalization can be omitted, did not participate in the study eye other users tracking was possible. Experimental results of facial movements that an average 90% of cases, other users on average 85% of the eye tracking results were shown.

Development of Eye Tracker System for Early Childhood (유아용 시선 추적 장치의 개발 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop and test an eye tracker focusing on early childhood participants, based on the characteristics of early childhood eye tracking studies. Eye tracking collects eye movement data of the subject, which provides scientific evidence of human cognition and thinking. The researcher built a Do It Yourself eye tracker camera module from general electronic components, and used Viewpoint analysis software from Arrington Research. The researcher compared the eye tracking data between the DIY eye tracker group and Tobii Pro eye tracker group, which provides a professional eye tracking system. Eye tracking data was collected from 52 five-year old children. The average proportion of valid trials between the two groups was compared with t test, and no significant difference was found. This result indicates that the DIY eye tracker can be used to collect valid eye tracking data from young children under certain research environment.
