  • In this study, we determine that the electron paramagnetic resonance line-width (EPRLW) is axially symmetric about the c-axis and analyze the spin Hamiltonian with an isotopic g-factor of 1.9920 at a frequency of 9.5 GHz. It should be noted that the electron paramagnetic resonance signals are Lorentzian. Our findings show that the EPRLW decreases exponentially with an increase in the temperature; i.e., its temperature dependence in the range 300-400 K obeys Arrhenius behavior, this kind of temperature dependence indicates an off-center a motional narrowing of the spectrum when $Mn^{2+}$ impurity ions substitute for $Nb^{5+}$ ions. The specific heats follow a linear dependence suggesting a simple Debye $T^3$ behavior.

  • Electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis was conducted for eight different kinds of dried seafood products to investigate their gamma-irradiation status. The specimens consisted of 0~10 kGy-irradiated bones, which included five dried fishes (plaice, hairtail, saury, herring, and dried filefish) and three dried mollusks (beca squid, dried squid, and mitra squid) without flesh or marrow. ESR analysis showed that irradiated specimens exhibited typical asymmetric signals as compared to non-irradiated specimens. ESR signal intensities of all dried fishery samples significantly increased depending on irradiation dose, whereas hydroxyapetite radicals clearly appeared in irradiated plaice, saury, and hairtail. In comparing hydroxyapatite (HA) ratio, irradiated hairtail showed a greater hydroxyapatite-radical generation rate than plaice and saury, and the HA ratio significantly increased with elevated irradiation dose. However, all irradiated plaice and hairtail samples, including 5 and 10 kGy-irradiated saury, showed radiation-derived radicals, whereas filefish and mollusks did not. From the results, ESR spectroscopy was found to have potential to be applied for identifying irradiated plaice, hairtail, and saury, which all contained bones.

  • Three non-ionic and two anioinic spin probes, differing in size and substituent, were synthesized. Their mobility in dried nylon 6 film was investicated by the spin probe technique using electron spin resonance spectrometer. When the size of a spin probe was large and the interaction between the probe molecules and polymer chains existed, the mobility of spin probes decreased. From Arrhenius plots of rotational correlation time, one discontinuity point ($T_d$) was determined. The activation energies for rotation below and above $T_d$ were discussed in terms of the mode of probe rotation. Three spin probes could be viewed as azo dyes having a built-in nitroxide radical. Photolysis of them in dimethylformamide and in nylon 6 film was performed by exposure to 254 nm UV light in the presence of air. It was found that dyes having a built-in nitroxide radical showed better photostability than dyes derived from ${\bata}-naphthol$..

  • The chalcogenide glass (ALS, $Al_2S_3-La_2S_3$) was prepared by melting a stoichiometric mixture of aluminum powder and $La_2S_3$ under $H_2S$ atmosphere at $1200{\circ}C$. Glasses containing 0.1-0.1% of $Mn^{2+},\;Gd^{3+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ were also prepared. The characteristic features of the ESR spectra for the transition metal containing ALS glasses are interpreted.

  • ZSM-5 gallosilicate molecular sieves was synthesized and cupric ion was ion-exchanged into the gallosilicate. The locations of Cu(ll) species in the framework and their interactions with various adsorbates were characterized by combined electron spin resonance(ESR) and electron spin echo modulation(ESEM) methods. It was found that in a fresh hydrated material, Cu(II) is octahedrally coordinated to six water molecules. This species is located in the channel intersections of two sinusoidal channels and rotates rapidly at room temperature. Evacuation removes some of these water molecules, leaving the Cu(II) coordinated to less water molecules and anchored to of oxygens in the channel wall. Dehydration produces two Cu(II) species, both of which are located in sites inaccessible to oxygen as evidenced by non-broadening of its ESR lines by oxygen. Adsorption of adsorbate molecules such as water, alcohols, ammonia, acetonitrile and ethylene on dehydrated CuNaH-ZSM-5 gallosilicate materials causes changes in the ESR spectrum of Cu(II), indicating the migration of Cu(II) into main channels to form complexes with these adsorbates there. Cu(II) forms a complex with two molecules of methanol, ethanol and propanol, respectively as evidenced by ESR parameters and ESEM data. Cu(II) also forms a square planar complex with four molecules of ammonia, based on the resolved nitrogen superhyperfine interactions and their ESEM parameters. Cu(II) forms a complex with two molecules of acetonitrile based on the ESR parameters and ESEM data. Interestingly, however, only part of Cu(II) interacts indirectly with one molecule of nonpolar ethylene based on ESR and ESEM analyses.

  • Photoinduced charge separation of alkylphenothiazines in molecular assemblies such as positively, negatively and neutrally charged micelle interface results in the paramagnetic phenothiazine cation radical. This was studied as a model system for the light energy conversion into chemical energy. The photoproduced phenothaizne cation radical was identified and its amount was quantized with electron spin resonance (ESR). The microenvironment of photoproduced cation radical was studied with pulsed-ESR. Such a charge separation is enhanced by the optimization of various structural factors of the molecular assemblies. The structural factors of molecular assemblies have focused on the interface charge, interface structure with different headgroups and interfacial perturbation by disolving interface active organic additives.

  • The time resolved electron spin resonance spectroscopy are used to two measurement methods of chemically induced dynamic electron polarization (CIDEP) and absorption ESR. The spectra of the semiquinone radical anion were successively detected in the laser flash photolysis of anthraquinone in the mixtures of 2-propanol and triethylamine. The semiquinone radical anion was fairly stable and its cw ESR could be observed. The rate constant (T1$^{-1}$) of the spin-depolarization of polarized semiquinone radical anion was 2.6 ${\times}\;1-^5$ sec$^{-1}$ and the decay of the radical anion was the first order with the rate constant (K$_1}$) of 300.0 sec$^{-1}$. The intensity of CIDEP spectra increased with the increasing the microwave power, but the Torrey wiggles appeared following with decay curves.

  • Yeast cytochrome c peroxidase (CcP) was cloned and overexpressed in E. coli, and purified by a Ni$^{2+}$-affinity column. HoloCcP was obtained by reconstituting apoCcP with Mn$^{3+}$-protoporphyrin IX (MnPP). Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of spin-labeled holoCcP showed a slightly more immobilized signal than spin-labeled apoCcP.(omitted)

  • Dosimerty based on electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis of radiation induced free radicals in amino acids is relevant to biological dosimetry applications. Alanine detectors are without walls and are tissue equivalent. Therefore, alanine ESR dosimetry looks promising for use in the therapy level. The dose range of the alanine/ESR dosimetry system can be extended down to 1 Gy. In water phantom the absorbed dose of electrons generated by a medical linear accelerator of different initial energies $(6\~21MeV)$ and therapeutic dose levels (1~60 Gy) was measured. Furthermore, depth dose measurements carried out with alanine dosimeters were compared with ionization chamber measurements. As the results, the measured absorbed doses for shallow depth of initial electron energies above 15 MeV were higher by$2\~5\%$ than those calculated by nominal energy $C_E$ factors. This seems to be caused by low energy scattered beams generated from the scattering foil and electron cones of beam projecting device in medical linear accelerator.
