The main purpose of this study is to apply spatial analysis using semivariograms to small-loop electromagnetic survey data to assess the extent of seawater intrusion in an experimental watershed. To indicate the extent of seawater intrusion over the study area, vertical electrical soundings at 33 points and electrical conductivity logging in two wells were conducted. From the correlation between resistivities obtained by inversion and the depth of the aquifer at the two wells, the region of seawater intrusion was identified and demonstrated by electrical conductivity logging results obtained over two years. To measure the variation of apparent conductivity with depth, an electromagnetic survey in six frequency bands was adopted. Apparent conductivity mapping with spatial analysis using semivariograms is an effective technique for identifying the region of seawater intrusion at shallow depth.
The small-loop electromagnetic (EM) survey is an effective method to delineate contamination areas and pathways of contaminant plumes from landfill. A multi-frequency small-loop EM survey was applied to find them at landfill area, located in delta region, and checked the results with in-situ surveys including 24 trench excavations and 12 drilling boreholes. The correlation between these two results indicates this survey would be suitable to investigate the contamination area. However, it would be difficult to analyze low resistivity less than 10 ohm-m below 10 m depth in delta area without drilling survey because of a limitation to expand the penetration depth lower than 10 m depth due to the separation of 1.66 m between the two coils of GEM-2.
Recently, concerns about health risks exposed to electromagnetic fields have been brought in the safety of electric power lines. A number of governmental and international organizations have advised to avoid the magnetic field exposure to the schools and residential areas. Some epidemiologic studies showed that electromagnetic fields should not exceed the exposure limits of 2-3mG to the people living near high-voltage transmission lines. In this study, the principles, ranges and survey methods of the assessment for powerfrequency electromagnetic fields were reviewed from the relevant research papers and documents. The ranges of electromagnetic fields were determined from 50m to 100m and have been defined according to the properties of each electric power lines and a new methodology was suggested in this study. It would be necessary to develop and improve specific assessment methods for various high-voltage transmission lines projects.
In this paper we consider an application of the method of electromagnetic (EM) migration to the interpretation of a typical marine controlled-source (MCSEM) survey consisting of a set of sea-bottom receivers and a moving electrical bipole transmitter. Three-dimensional interpretation of MCSEM data is a very challenging problem because of the enormous number of computations required in the case of the multi-transmitter and multi-receiver data acquisition systems used in these surveys. At the same time, we demonstrate that the MCSEM surveys with their dense system of transmitters and receivers are extremely well suited for application of the migration method. In order to speed up the computation of the migration field, we apply a fast form of integral equation (IE) solution based on the multigrid quasi-linear (MGQL) approximation which we have developed. The principles of migration imaging formulated in this paper are tested on a typical model of a sea-bottom petroleum reservoir.

To detect the position and depth of buried underground utilities, method of Ground Penetrating Radar(GPR) survey is the most commonly used. However, the skin-depth of GPR is very shallow, and in the places where subsurface materials are not homogeneous and are compose of clays and/or salts and gravels, GPR method has limitations in application and interpretation. The aim of this study is to overcome these limitations of GPR survey. For this purpose the site where the GPR survey is unsuccessful to detect the underground big pipes is selected, and soil tests were conducted to confirm the reason why GPR method was not applicable. Non-destructive high-frequency electromagnetic (HFEM) survey was newly developed and was applied in the study area to prove the effectiveness of this new technique. The frequency ranges $2kHz{\sim}4MHz$ and the skin depth is about 30m. The HFEM measures the electric field and magnetic field perpendicular to each other to get the impedance from which vertical electric resistivity distribution at the measured point can be deduced. By adopting the capacitive coupled electrodes, it can make the measuring time shorter, and can be applied to the places covered by asphalt an and/or concrete. In addition to the above mentioned advantages, noise due to high-voltage power line is much reduced by stacking the signals. As a result, the HFEM was successful in detecting the buried underground objects. Therefore this method is a promising new technique that can be applied in the lots of fields, such as geotechnical and archaeological surveys.
Among the geophysical exploration methods, electromagnetic (EM) survey must have the broadest range of instrumental systems and remarkable range of applications. There is a plethora of available techniques and instruments, and the depth of investigation and resolution are highly dependent on the particular systems used according to their operating frequency and source-receiver configuration. This diversity of EM systems, however, provides a wide range of instruments or methodologies to choose in order to select the most appropriate tool for the task in hand. This rather than being a disadvantage, would be a major strength of EM methods. Modern EM equipments are remarkably portable, considering their sophistication. Coupled with major advances in recent computer technology, accurate modeling and interpretation techniques are on the way of continuous development and upgrade which, in turn, make the EM methods to become much more heavily used, especially for engineering and environmental applications. We aim to provide a brief theoretical principles, survey techniques and case histories of some selected EM methods that can be applied to geotechnical and environmental problems in Korea.

A geophysical and geochemical study was performed to verify the depth of landfill as well as the horizontal/vertical distribution of leachate at the landfill site located in Gongju. The electrical resistivity, with dipole-dipole array and dipole spacing of 5m, was applied along the nine survey lines and electromagnetic induction survey was conducted along the perimeter traverse surrounding the landfill. Cations, anions and stable isotope ($\delta$D and $\delta$$^{18}$ O) analyses were performed on about 63 water and leachate samples collected in dry and rainy seasons at 31 sites. The result of electromagnetic induction survey make it possible to derive the potential route of leachate in the past or present. The imaging of processed resistivity field data show that the possible route of leachate doesn't exist except the survey line 7. The weak zone traversing the landfill, however, is revealed by the electrical resistivity imaging, which may be the potential route of leachate toward the deep ground. The geochemical data agree well with geophysical data for deducing possible route of leachate of the site.

In this study, we offered the results of geophysical and geochemical survey on the municipal waste disposal area to delineate the size and extent of leachate contamination. Preliminary to intensive geochemical investigation, we performed two geophysical methods to characterize the survey area. Electromagnetic (EM) and magnetic method were used far site investigation. From the EM method, we can get the information of soil conductivity directly related to the leachate of the contaminations and from magnetic anomalies we can find the boundary of landfill which is not identified on the surface due to soil capping. The results of geophysical survey were well matched to those of geochemical method carried out inside and near the landfill. Electric conductivity (EC) of the groundwater sampled from low resistivity anomaly region of EM result was higher than background value and the border estimated from the magnetic survey showed good agreement with that estimated from the soil gas detection survey.
Ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey is a geophysical method that utilizes electromagnetic waves reflecting from a boundary where the electromagnetic property changes. As the frequency of the antenna is about 25 MHz ~ 1 GHz, it is effective to acquire high resolution images of underground pipe, artificial structure, underground cavity, and underground structure. In this study, we analyzed the change of signals reflected from the same underground objects according to the arrangement of transceiver antennas used in ground penetrating radar survey. The antenna used in the experiment was 200 MHz, and the survey was performed in the vertical direction across the sewer and the parallel direction along the sewer to the sewer buried under the road, respectively. A total of five antenna array methods were applied to the survey. The most used arrangement is when the transmitting and receiving antennas are all perpendicular to the survey line (PR-BD). The PR-BD arrangement is effective when the object underground is a horizontal reflector with an angle of less than 30°, such as the sewer under investigation. In this case study, it was confirmed that the transmitter and receiver antennas perpendicular to the survey line (PR-BD) are the most effective way to show the underground structure. In addition, in the case where the transmitting and receiving antennas are orthogonal to each other (XPOL), no specific reflected wave was observed in both experiments measured across or parallel to the sewer. Therefore, in the case of detecting undiscovered objects in the underground, the PR-BD array method in which the transmitting and receiving antennas are aligned in the direction perpendicular to the survey line taken as a reference and the XPOL method in which the transmitting and receiving antennas are orthogonal to each other are all used, it can be effective to apply both of the above arrangements after setting the direction to 45° and 135°.
