  • The specific role of current collectors was investigated at the electrolyte/electrode interface of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Ag grids were fabricated as current collectors using electrohydrodynamic (EHD) jet printing for precise control of the grid geometry. The Ag grids reduced both the ohmic and polarization resistances as the pitch of the Ag grids decreased from $400{\mu}m$ to $100{\mu}m$. The effective electron distribution along the Ag grids improved the charge transport and transfer at the interface, extending the active reaction sites. Our results demonstrate the applicability of EHD jet printing to the fabrication of efficient current collectors for performance enhancement of SOFCs.

  • The improved method comprises electrochemically deposition of nickel hydroxide into the sintered nickel plaque cathode from nickel aqueous electrolyte at acid pH in a treating zone containing an anode. The electrochemical impregnation was examined under various conditions. Deposition condition of fine active material was obtained from the impregnation of a high temperature and also high current density. This method also could be decreased swelling and buckling of the plaque. A nickel electrode prepared by electrochemical impregnation is useful as the positive in nickel-cadmium cells. The utilization of the active material indicated almost 100% based on a one electron charge.

  • The ionic conductivity of polycrystalline, glass, and glass-ceramic silicates was measured using two-terminal AC method with blocking electrode over a frequency range of 100 Hz to 100 KHz in the temperature range of $200^{\circ}C$ to $320^{\circ}C$. Analysing the capacitance (C), susceptance (B), impedance (Z), and conductance (G) under the given conditions, an equivalent circuit containing temperature and frequency dependent component is proposed. Higher capacitance could be observed in the low frequency region and on the improved ionic migration conditions i.e., at higher temperature in a better ionic conductor. Also the electrode polarization built up at the electrode-specimen interface could be sorted out above 10 KHz. However, grain boundary contribution couldn't be extracted from the bulk resistance over the frequency range measured here.

  • The electrochemical behavior of dissolved hydrogen (H2) was investigated at a Pt electrode in a high temperature LiOH-H3BO3 solution. The diffusion current of the H2 oxidation was proportional to the concentration of the dissolved H2 as well as the reciprocal of the temperature. In the polarization curve, a potential region in which the oxidation current decreases despite an increase in the applied potential between the H2 oxidation and the water oxidation regions was observed. This potential region was interpreted as being caused by the formation of a Pt oxide layer. Using the properties of the Cl- ion that reduces the growth rate of the Pt oxide layer, it was confirmed that there is a correlation between the Cl- ion concentration and the transient current of the H2 oxidation.

  • SrBi$_{2}$Ta$_{2}$O$_{9}$ (SBT) ferroelectric thin films for nonvolatile memory were prepared on Pt/Ti/SiO$_{2}$/Si and RuO$_{2}$/SiO$_{2}$/Si substrates by RF magnetron sputtering. The dependences of crystalline and electrical properties on the lower electrode type(Pt and RuO$_{2}$) and the annealing temperatures were investigated. SBT films regardless of their electrode types showed typeical Bi layered peroviskite crystal structures. The crystalline quality of as-deposited SBT films was improved by the rapid thermal annealing at 650.deg. C for 30 sec. The remanetn polarization of 2Pr (Pr+-Pr-) of the annealed SBT films deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO$_{2}$/Si substrates were about 11 .mu.C/cm$^{2}$ and 3 .mu.C/cm$^{2}$, respectively. The leakage currents at 3 V bias voltage were about 0.8 .mu.A/cm$^{2}$ for SBT/ Pt/Ti/SiO$_{2}$/Si and about 1 .mu.A/cm$^{2}$ for SBT/RuO$_{2}$/SiO$_{2}$/Si sample. SBT films annealed at 650 .deg. C showed no degradation in Pr values after 10$^{11}$ polarization switching cycles, indicating good fatigue properties. In addition, for SBT samples deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO$_{2}$/Si, Pr values increased to more than that of initial state, suggesting the increament of leakage current caused by repeated polarization.

  • It is inclined to increase that use of hazardous substances such as lead(Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium(Cd) etc. are prohibited in the electronics according to environmental friendly policies of an advanced nation for protecting environment of earth. As this reasons, many researches for ensuring the reliability were proceeding in Pb free soldering process. n the flux remains on the PCB(printed circuit board) in the soldering process or the electronics exposed to corrosive environment, it becomes the reasons of breakdown or malfunction of the electronics caused by corrosion. Therefore in this studies we researched the polarization and Tafel properties of Sn40Pb and SnCu system solders based on the electrochemical theory. The experimental polarization curves were measured in distilled ionized water and 1 mole $3.5 wt\%$ NaCl electrolyte of $40^{\circ}C$, pH 7.5. Ag/AgCl and graphite were utilized by reference and counter electrodes, respectively. To observe the electrochemical reaction, polarization test was conducted from -250mV to +250mV. From the polarization curves composed of anodic and cathodic curves, we obtained Tafel slop, reversible electrode potential(Ecorr) and exchange current density((cow). In these results, we compared the corrosion rate of SnPb and SnCu solders.

  • Recently a fuel oil of the diesel engine in the ship is being changed with low quality as the oil price is higher more and more. Therefore the wear and corrosion in all parts of the engine like cylinder liner ring groove of piston crown, spindle and seat ring of exhaust valve are increased with using of heavy oil of low quality In particular the degree of wear and corrosion in between valve spindle and seat ring are more serious compared to the other parts of the engine due to operating in severe environment such as the high temperature of exhaust gas and repeating impact. Thus the repair weld to the valve spindle and seat ring is a unique method to prolong the life of the exhaust valve in an economical point of view In this study. corrosion property of both weld metal zone and base metal was investigated with some electrochemical methods such as measurement of corrosion potential, cathodic and anodic polarization curves, cyclic voltammogram and polarization resistance etc. in 5% $H_2SO_4$ solution. in the case of being welded with some welding methods and welding materials to the exhaust valve specimen as the base metal. In all cases. the values of hardness of the weld metal zone were more high than that of the base metal. And their corrosion resistance were also superior to the base metal. The weld metal of A2F(AC SMAW: 2 pass welding with foreign electrode) showed a relatively good results to the corrosion resistance as well as the hardness compared to the ether welding methods and welding materials. Moreover it indicated that hardness of the weld metal by the domestic electrode was considerably high compared to that of the foreign electrode.

  • Highly (h00)-oriented (Ba, Sr)TiO$_3$(BST) thin films were grown by pulsed laser deposition on the perovskite LaNiO$_3$(LNO) metallic oxide layer as a bottom electrode. The LNO films were deposited on SiO$_2$/Si substrates by rf-magnetron sputtering method. The crystalline phases of the BST film were characterized by x-ray $\theta$-2$\theta$, $\omega$-rocking curve and $\psi$-scan diffraction measurements. The surface microsturcture observed by scanning electron microscopy was very dense and smooth. The low-frequency dielectric responses of the BST films grown at various substrate temperatures were measured as a function of frequency in the frequency range from 0.1 Hz to 10 MHz. The BST films have the dielectric constant of 265 at 1 kHz and showed multiple dielectric relaxation at the low frequency region. The origin of these low-frequency dielectric relaxation are attributed to the ionized space charge carriers such as the oxygen vacancies and defects in BST film, the interfacial polarization in the grain boundary region and the electrode polarization. We studied also on the capacitance-voltage characteristics of BST films.

  • A comparative study was performed on the passivating abilities of surface films generated on lithium titanate (LTO; $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$) electrodes during pre-cycling at two different rates. The surface film deposited at a faster pre-cycling rate (i.e., 0.5 C) is irregularly shaped and unevenly covers the LTO electrode. Owing to the incomplete coverage of the protective film, this LTO electrode exhibits poor passivating ability. Additional electrolyte decomposition and concomitant film deposition occur during subsequent charge/discharge cycles. As a result of the thick surface film, severe cell polarization occurs and eventually causes cell failure. However, pre-cycling the Li/LTO cell at a slower rate (0.1 C) improves cell polarization and capacity retention; this occurs because the surface film uniformly covers the LTO electrode and provides strong passivation. Accordingly, there is no significant film deposition during subsequent charge/discharge cycling. Additionally, self-discharge is reduced during high-temperature storage.

  • Gas diffusion layer (GDL) compression is important parameter of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) performance to have an effect on contact resistance, reactants transfer to electrode, water content in membrane and electrode assembly (MEA). In this study, the effect of GDL compression on fuel cell performance was investigated for commercial products, JNT20-A3. Polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was performed at different relative humidity and compression ratio using electrode area of 25 ㎠ unit cell. The contact resistance was reduced to 8, 30 mΩ·㎠ and membrane hydration was increased as GDL compression increase from 18.6% to 38.1% at relative humidity of 100 and 25%, respectively. It was identified through ohmic resistance change at relative humidity conditions that as GDL compression increased, water back-diffusion from cathode and electrolyte membrane hydration was increased because GDL porosity was decreased.
