  • Zeolite-templated carbons (ZTCs), which have high specific surface area, were prepared by a conventional templating method using microporous zeolite-Y for catalyst supports in direct methanol fuel cells. The ZTCs were synthesized at different temperatures to investigate the characteristics of the surface produced and their electrochemical properties. Thereafter, Pt-Ru was deposited at different carbonization temperatures by a chemical reduction method. The crystalline and structural features were investigated using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The textural properties of the ZTCs were investigated by analyzing $N_2$/77 K adsorption isotherms using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller equation, while the micro- and meso-pore size distributions were analyzed using the Barrett-Joyner-Halenda and Harvarth-Kawazoe methods, respectively. The surface morphology was characterized using transmission electron microscopy and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The electrochemical properties of the Pt-Ru/ZTCs catalysts were also analyzed by cyclic voltammetry measurements. From the results, the ZTCs carbonized at $900^{\circ}C$ show the highest specific surface areas. In addition, ZTC900-PR led to uniform dispersion of Pt-Ru on the ZTCs, which enhanced the electro-catalytic activity of the Pt-Ru catalysts. The particle size of ZTC900-PR catalyst is about 3.4 nm, also peak current density from the CV plot is $12.5mA/cm^2$. Therefore, electro-catalytic activity of the ZTC900-PR catalyst is higher than those of ZTC1000-PR catalyst.

  • Electrochemical properties of the Al current collector being used in lithium ion batteries have been studied in the 4 different aprotic electrolytes(1 M $LiBF_4$ EC : DMC, 1 M $LiBF_4$ EC : EMC. 1 M $LiPF_6$ EC : DMC. 1 M $LiPF_6$ EC : EMC) employing cyclic voltammetry and impedance measurement. Al electrode showed a wide range of the electrochemical window(0.5~4.1 V vs. $Li/Li^{+}$). However, solid interfacial materials has been formed on the Al surface due to reduction of impurities($H_2O$, $O_2$, etc), lithium salts, and electrolytes at low applied potentials, and aluminum oxides in the highly oxidizing potential as well. Especially, Al current collector was susceptible to localized in consequence of impurities in electrolytes.

  • In this work, Fe-Pd alloy films have been electrodeposited on different substrates using an electrolyte containing $[Pd(NH_3)_4]^{2+}$ (0.02 M) and $[Fe-Citrate]^{2+}$ (0.2 M). The influences of substrate and overpotential on chemical composition, nucleation and growth kinetics as well as the electrodeposited films morphology have been investigated using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), current-time transients, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. In all substrates - brass, copper and sputtered fluorine doped tin oxide on glass (FTO/glass) - Fe content of the electrodeposited alloys increases by increasing the overpotential. Also the cathodic current efficiency is low due to high rate of $H_2$ co-reduction. Regarding the chronoamperometry current-time transients, it has been demonstrated that the nucleation mechanism is instantaneous with a typical three dimensional (3D) diffusion-controlled growth in the case of brass and copper substrates; while for FTO, the growth mode changes to 3D progressive. At a constant overpotential, the calculated number of active nucleation sites for metallic substrates is much higher than that of FTO/glass; however by increasing the overpotential, the number of active nucleation sites increases. The SEM micrographs as well as the XRD patterns reveal the formation of Fe-Pd alloy thin films with nanostructure arrangement and ultra-fine grains.

  • Cr-Mo-V steel is widely used as a material for the turbine structural component in fossil power plants. It is well known that this material shows the various material degradation phenomenons such as temper embrittlement, carbide coarsening. and softening etc. or ins to the severe operation conditions as high temperature and high pressure. These deteriorative factors cause tile change of mechanical properties as reduction of fracture toughness. Therefor it is necessary to evaluate tile extent of degradation damage for Cr-Mo-V steel in life assessment of turbine structural components. In this paper. the electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation(EPR) test in $50wt%-Ca(NO_3)_2$ solution is performed to develop the newly technique for degradation damage evaluation of Cr-Mo-V steel. The results obtained from the EPR test are compared with those in small punch(SP) tests recommended by semi-nondestructive testing method using miniaturized specimen. The evaluation parameters used in EPR test are tile reactivation current density$(I_R)$ and charge$(Q_{RC})$ reactivation rate$(I_R/I_{Crit},\;Q_R/Q_{Crit})$. The results suggest that $I_R/I_{Crit}$ in these parameters shows a good correlation with SP test results.

  • In this study, the electrochemical characteristics of porous silicon/carbon composite anode were investigated to improve the cycle stability and rate performance in lithium ion batteries. In this study, the effect of TEOS and $NH_3$ concentration, mixing speed and temperature on particle size of nano silica was investigated using $St{\ddot{o}}ber$ method. Nano porous Si/C composites were prepared by the fabrication processes including the synthesis of nano $SiO_2$, magnesiothermic reduction of nano $SiO_2$ to obtain nano porous Si by HCl etching, and carbonization of phenolic resin. Also the electrochemical performances of nano porous Si/C composites as the anode were performed by constant current charge/discharge test, cyclic voltammetry and impedance tests in the electrolyte of $LiPF_6$ dissolved inorganic solvents (EC:DMC:EMC=1:1:1vol%). It is found that the coin cell using nano porous Si/C composite has the capacity of 2,006 mAh/g and the capacity retention ratio was 55.4% after 40 cycle.

  • We investigated the electrochemical properties for Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films mixed with 4-octyl-4'-(5-carboxylpentamethyleneoxy)azobenzene (denoted as 8A5H) and $phospholipid(L-{\alpha}-dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine$, denoted as DMPC). LB films of 8A5H monolayer and 8A5H-DMPC were deposited by using the Langmuir-Blodgett method on the indium tin oxide(ITO) glass. The electrochemical properties measured by using cyclic voltammetry with a three_electrode system, an Ag/AgCl reference electrode, a platinum wire counter electrode and LB film-coated ITO working electrode at various concentrations(0.1, 0.5, and 1.0mol/L) of $NaClO_4$ solution. A measuring range was reduced from initial potential to -1350mV, continuously oxidized to 1650mV and measured to the initial point. The scan rates were 50, 100, 150 and 200mV/s, respectively. As a result, LB films of 8A5H monolayer appeared irreversible process caused by only the oxidation current from the cyclic voltammogram and LB films of 8A5H-DMPC mixture were found to be caused by a reversible oxidation-reduction process.

  • This work examines the characterization and corrosion behaviour of laser alloyed UNSG10150 steel with three different premixed composition Zn-Sn binary powders using a 4.4 kW continuous wave (CW) Rofin Sinar Nd:YAG laser processing system. The steel alloyed samples were cut to corrosion coupons, immersed in sulphuric acid (0.5 M H2SO4) solution at 30℃ using electrochemical technique and investigated for its corrosion behaviour. The morphologies and microstructures of the developed coated and uncoated samples were characterized by Optic Nikon Optical microscope (OPM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM/EDS). Moreover, X-ray diffractometer (XRD) was used to identify the phases present. An enhancement of 2.7-times the hardness of the steel substrate was achieved in sample A1 which may be attributed to the fine microstructure, dislocations and the high degree of saturation of solid solution brought by the high scanning speed. At scanning speed of 0.8 m/min, sample A1 exhibited the highest polarization resistance Rp (1081678 Ωcm2 ), lowest corrosion current density icorr (4.81×10−8A/cm2 ), and lowest corrosion rate Cr (0.0005 mm/year) in 0.5 M H2SO4. The polarization resistance Rp (1081678 Ωcm2 ) is 67,813-times the polarization of the UNSG10150 substrate and 99.9972% reduction in the corrosion rate.

  • Thin films of buckminsterfullerene($C_{60}$) formed by solution drop casting on Pt foil electrode surfaces were studied by cyclic voltammetry(CV) in acetonitrile(MeCN) containing quaternary ammonium or alkali-metal salts as supporting electrolyte. The electrochemical behaviors of $C_{60}$ films are found to be strongly dependent on the nature of the supporting electrolytes, especially with tetrabutyl ammonium perchlorate (TBAP, $NBu_4ClO_4$), and tetrabutyl ammonium tetrafluoroborate ($TBABF_4$, $NBu_4BF_4$). Reasonably stable films are formed into which electrons can be injected. The interaction of $C_{60}$ film with the quaternary ammonium cation may produce the fulleride salts $(TBA^+)(C{_{60}}^-)$ and $(TBA^+)_2(C{_{60}}^{2-})$. The bulk electroreduction with a controlled potential to generate the soluble $C{_{60}}^{3-}$ anions(dark red-brown color) is followed by electrooxidative deposition to produce a neutral $C_{60}$ film on the surface. The peak currents($I_{pc}$ and $I_{pa}$) of these thin film were dramatically decreased with repetitive potential scanning. These results could be explained by the adsorption-desorption phenomena and ion pairing interaction of reduced species($C{_{60}}^-$, and $C{_{60}}^{2-}$) onto the electrode surface. The peak current changes and peak potential shifts of the thin $C_{60}$ film in cyclic voltammograms formed from solution were observed by varying scan rates.

  • The effect of initial electrolyte loading (IEL) on cell performance in a coin-type molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) was investigated in this work. Since the material of MCFC depends on the manufacturer, optimisation requires experimental investigation. In total, four IEL values, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 g, were used, corresponding to a pore filling ratio (PFR) of 38, 51, 77, and 102%, respectively. The cell performance with respect to the PFR was analysed via steady-state polarisation, step-chronopotentiomtery, and impedance methods. The electrochemical analyses revealed that internal resistance and overpotential of the cell decreased with increasing PFR, and a large overpotential was observed when the PFR was 102%, probably due to the flooding phenomenon. After operation, cross-section of the cell was analysed via surface analysis of SEM and EDS methods, and the remaining electrolyte was estimated by dissolution of the cell in 10 wt% acetic acid. A linear relationship between IEL and the weight reduction ratio by dissolution was obtained. Thus, the remaining amount of electrolyte could be measured after operation. The results of SEM and EDS showed that a PFR of 38 and 102% showed a lack and flooding of electrolytes at the cell, respectively, which led to a large overpotential. This work reports that MCFC performance is allowed only in the narrow range of PFR.

  • We studied electrochemical characteristics of Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) films by using cyclic voltammetry with a three-electrode system. An Ag/AgCl as a reference electrode, a platinum wire as a counter electrode and LB film-coated indium tin oxide(ITO) as a working electrode were used to study electrochemical characteristics at a various concentration of $NaClO_4$ solution. LB films were reduced from initial potential to -1350 mV, continuously oxidized to l650mV and returned to the initial point. The scan rate was l00mV/s. The monolayer surface morphology of the LB film have been measured by Atomic Force Microscope(AFM). As a result, We comfirmed that the microscopic properties of LB film by AFM showed the good orientation of momolayer molecules and the thickness of monolayer was 3.5-4.lnm. The cyclic voltammograms(CV) of the ITO-coated glass showed the peak potentials for the reduction-oxidation reation. LB films of 4-octyl-4'-(5-carboxypentamethyleneoxy) azobenzene(8A5H) / L-${\alpha}$-phosphayidyl choline, dilauroyl(DLPC) seemed to be irreversible process caused by only the oxidation current from the cyclic voltammogram. The current of oxidatation increased at cyclic voltammogram by increasing 8A5H density in LB films. The diffusivity(D) of LB films increased with increasing of a 8A5H amount and was inversely proportional to the concentration of $NaClO_4$ solution.
