Mitochondria, fundamental cellular organelles that govern energy metabolism, hold a pivotal role in cellular vitality. While consuming dioxygen to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the electron transfer process within mitochondria can engender the formation of reactive oxygen species that exert dual roles in endothelial homeostatic signaling and oxidative stress. In the context of the intricate electron transfer process, several metal ions that include copper, iron, zinc, and manganese serve as crucial cofactors in mitochondrial metalloenzymes to mediate the synthesis of ATP and antioxidant defense. In this mini review, we provide a comprehensive understanding of the coordination chemistry of mitochondrial cuproenzymes. In detail, cytochrome c oxidase (CcO) reduces dioxygen to water coupled with proton pumping to generate an electrochemical gradient, while superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) functions in detoxifying superoxide into hydrogen peroxide. With an emphasis on the catalytic reactions of the copper metalloenzymes and insights into their ligand environment, we also outline the metalation process of these enzymes throughout the copper trafficking system. The impairment of copper homeostasis can trigger mitochondrial dysfunction, and potentially lead to the development of copper-related disorders. We describe the current knowledge regarding copper-mediated toxicity mechanisms, thereby shedding light on prospective therapeutic strategies for pathologies intertwined with copper dyshomeostasis.

Ammonia, which is closely related to our lives, has a significant impact on our lives as a representative substance for crop cultivation. Recently, it has gained attention as an efficient and productive hydrogen/storing substance that can replace fossil fuels. Efforts are being made to utilize it as a renewable energy source through thermochemical and electrochemical reactions. However, the use of ammonia, which encompasses the era, carries inherent toxicity, so a comprehensive understanding of ammonia safety is necessary. To ensure safety in the transportation and storage of ammonia and chemical substances domestically and internationally, national and organizational standards are being developed and provided through documents and simple symbols to help people understand. This review explores the chemical characteristics of ammonia, its impact on human health, and the global trends in safety standards related to ammonia. Through this examination, the paper aims to contribute to the discourse on the safety and risk management of ammonia transport and storage, crucial for achieving carbon neutrality and expanding the hydrogen economy.
This study is to develop a fuel cell system applicable to an in situ NMR (Nuclear magnetic resonance) diagnosis. The in situ NMR can be used in real time monitoring of various reactions occurring in the fuel cell, such as oxidation of fuel, reduction of oxygen, transport phenomena, and component degradation. The fuel cell for this purpose is, however, to be operated in a specifically designed tubular shape toroid cavity detector (TCD), which constrains the fuel cell to have a tubular shape. This may cause difficulties in effective mass transport of reactants/products and uniform distribution of assembly pressure. Therefore, a new flow field designed in a particular way is necessary to enhance the mass transport in the tubular fuel cell. In this study, a tubular-shaped close-type flow field made of non-magnetic material is developed. With this flow field, oxygen is effectively delivered to the cathode surface and the produced water is readily removed from the membrane-electrode assembly to prevent flooding. The resulting DMFC (direct methanol fuel cell) outperforms the open-type flow field and exhibits $36\;mW/cm^2$ even at room temperature.
The Langmuir adsorption isotherms of the under-potentially deposited hydrogen (UPD H) and the over-potentially deposited hydrogen (OPD H) at the single crystal Pt(100)/0.5 M $H_2SO_4$ and 0.5 M LiOH aqueous electrolyte interfaces have been studied using the phase-shift method. The phase-shift profile $({-\varphi}\;vs.\;E)$ for the optimum intermediate frequency can be used as a useful method to estimate the Langmuir adsorption isotherm $(\theta\;vs.\;E)$ at the interfaces. The equilibrium constant (K) for the OPD H and the standard free energy $({\Delta}G_{ads})$ of the OPD H at the Pt(100)/0.5M $H_2SO_4$ aqueous electrolyte interface are $1.5\times10^{-4}$ and 21.8 kJ/mol, respectively. At the Pt(100)/0.5 LiOH aqueous electrolyte interface, K transits from 1.9(UPD H) to $6.8\times10^{-6}$(OPD H) depending on the cathode potential (E) and vice versa. Similarly, ${\Delta}G_{ads}$ transits -1.6 kJ/mol (UPD H) to 29.5 kJ/mol (OPD H) depending on E and vice versa. The transition of K and ${\Delta}G_{ads}$ is attributed to the two distinct adsorption sites of the UPD H and OPD H on the Pt(100) surface. The UPD H and the OPD H at the Pt(100) interfaces are the independent processes depending on the H adsorption sites rather than the sequential processes for the cathodic $H_2$ evolution reactions.
Vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) is an energy conversion device in which charging and discharging are alternatively carried out by oxidation and reduction reactions of vanadium ions with different oxidation states. VRFB consists of electrolyte, electrode, ion-exchange membrane, etc. The role of ion-exchange membranes in VRFB separates anolyte and catholyte and provides a high conductivity to hydrogen ions. Recently much attention has been devoted to develop ideal ion-exchange membranes for VRFB. A number of developed ion-exchange membranes should be evaluated to find out ideal ion-exchange membranes for VRFB. Long-term durability test is a crucial characterization of ion-exchange membranes for commercialization, but is very time-consuming. In this study, the life time prediction protocol of ion-exchange membranes in VRFB cell tests was developed through short-term single cell performance evaluation (real total operation time, 87.5 hrs) at three different current densities. We confirmed a decrease in test time up to 96.2% of real durability tests (expected total operation time, 2,296 hrs) and 5~6% of relative error discrepancy between the predicted and the real life time in a unit cell.
Electrochemical properties of Georgia kaolinite in aqueous suspension were studied by ion adsorption, potentiometric titration, and electrophoretic mobility measurements. Kaolinite in 0.001 M and 0.1 M NaCl solution showed qualitatively both pH independent and pH depender negative and positive charges through pH range 2.5-11.0 when dissolved aluminum ions from kaolinite were considered as well as $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$ as index ions. Electrophoretic mobilities (EM) of 0.02 wt. % kaolinite suspension in distilled water and 0.001 M NaCl solution were approximately constant against mobility measuring time consumed in the electrophoresis cell at different pH values, and isoelectric points(IEP) were around pH 4.7. EM values in 0.1 M NaCl solution were positive and constant against mobility measuring time below pH 4; but above pH 4, EM values were negative for the first 10 seconds followed by positive values which became approximately constant through stepped changes after 10 minutes. Hydrated cations may bind to the six- member oxygen ring sites having multiple partial negative charges on the exterior tetrahedral layer surface by both electrostatic and hydrogen bonding force while hydrated anions bind to the partially positively charged hydrogen atoms on the exterior octahedral layer surface. Parts of the aluminol groups on the exterior octahedral layer surface as well as edge faces may be involved in complex reactions and have both anion and cation exchange capacities in the electrolyte solution above pH 4.
Reactions of $(Et_4N)_2[MoOCl_5]$ with multidentate ligands containing nitrogen or/and oxygen donor atom (EDTA, DTPA, IDA, CyDTA, OX) produce a series of binuclear molybdate (V) complexes. The prepared Mo (V) complexes has been identified by Elemental Analysis, Infrared Spectra, Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectra, and Electronic Spectra. The electrochemical reduction mechanism has been studied by Cyclic voltammetry, Controlled Potential Coulometry, and Spectrophotometry in pH 3.571-10.375 acetate, borate, phosphate/sodium hydroxide, phosphate, ammonium/ammonia buffers. The cyclic voltammogram of the Mo-EDTA, DTPA, IDA, CyDTA complexes at pH < ca. 6.00 have shown two reduction waves. The first reduction wave shows two electron process and the second reduction wave shows two electron process. The cyclic voltammogram of the Mo-EDTA, DTPA, IDA, CyDTA complexes at pH < ca. 8.00 has shown one reduction wave. This reduction wave show four electron process. The cyclic voltammogram of the Mo-OX complex at pH < ca. 7.2 has shown one reduction wave. This reduction wave show four electron process.

Voltammetric behavior of some light lanthanide ions (La$^{3+}$, Pr$^{3+}$, Nd$^{3+}$, Sm$^{3+}$, and Eu$^{3+}$) in various supporting electrolytes has been investigated by several electrochemical techniques. The peak potentials and the peak currents, their dependency on the concentration, temperature and pH effects, the reversibility of the electrode reactions are described. The reduction of La$^{3+}$, Pr$^{3+}$ and Nd$^{3+}$ in 0.1 M lithium chloride proceeds by a three-electron change directly to the metallic state (Ln$^{3+}$ + 3e- → Ln$^0$) and charge transfer is totally irreversible. However, the reduction of Sm$^{3+}$ in 0.1 M tetramethylammonium iodide and Eu$^{3+}$ in 0.1 M lithium chloride proceeds in two stages (Ln$^{3+}$ + e- → Ln$^{2+}$ and Ln$^{2+}$ + 2e- → Ln$^0$). At pH values lower than ca.4 the hydrated lanthanide species (Ln(OH)$^{2+}$) reduced before the lanthanide ions (Ln$^{3+}$) due to the catalytic effect of hydrogen ions, and peak current increase with in the order Eu$^{3+}$ < Sm$^{3+}$ < Nd$^{3+}$ < Pr$^{3+}$ < La$^{3+}$ in differential pulse polarography. Some representative plots of $i_{pc}V^{-1/2} (proportional to current function) vs. V show considerable influence of hydrogen ion/lanthanide ion concentration in cyclic voltammetry. It is shown that a reaction of lanthanide ions with proton and/or water and catalytic reaction is enhanced at lower pH and at decreased lanthanide ion concentration.

In order to improve the efficiency of the water splitting system for hydrogen energy production, the high overvoltage in the electrochemical reaction caused by the catalyst in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) must be reduced. Among them, transition metal-based compounds (hydroxide, sulfide, etc.) are attracting attention as catalyst materials to replace currently used precious metals such as platinum. In this study, Ni foam, an inexpensive metal porous material, was used as a support and β-Ni(OH)2 microcrystals were synthesized through a hydrothermal synthesis process. In addition, changes in the crystal morphology, crystal structure, and water splitting characteristics of β-Ni(OH)2 microcrystals synthesized by doping Fe to improve electrochemical properties were observed, and applicability as a catalyst in a commercial water electrolysis system was examined.
Non-aqueous processes have been developed for stable management and reuse of spent fuels. Nowadays, a plan for the management of spent fuel is being sought focusing on a non-aqueous process in Korea. Named as pyroprocessing, it includes an electrolytic reduction process using molten salt at high temperature for the spent fuels, which provides metallic product for a following electro-refining process. The electrolytic reduction process utilizes electrochemical reaction producing Li to convert oxides into metals in high temperature LiCl medium. Various kinds of elements in the spent fuels would be distributed in the system according to their respective reactivity with the reductant, Li, and the medium, LiCl. This study elucidates the reactions of the elements to understand the behavior of composite elements on the spent fuels by thermodynamic calculations. Uranium and transuranic are reduced into their metallic forms while rare-earth oxides, except for Eu, are stable against the reaction at a process temperature. This study also covers the tendency of reactions with respect to the temperature and, finally, estimates radioactivity and heat load on the distributed phases based on the reference spent fuel characteristics.
