The electrochemical behaviors of various metals with and without diamond-like-carbon (DLC) coating in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution were investigated. The effect of hydrodynamic conditions was focused by employing a rotating disc electrode (RDE). The experimental results showed that each bare metal had a more positive corrosion potential and a higher corrosion rate due to enhanced oxygen transport at the higher rotating speed of the RDE. DLC coating caused a substantial increase in the corrosion resistance of all metals studied. However, localized corrosion was still found in the DLC-coated metal at sites where deposition defects existed. Surface morphology examination was performed after the electrochemical test to confirm the roles of hydrodynamic conditions and DLC coating.

The effect of mixing ratio on the corrosion protection of carbon steel coated by a film composed of poly(vinylidene) fluoride (PVDF) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was examined using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Surface crystallization behavior and thermal properties of the PVDF/PMMA coated carbon steel were evaluated using polarized optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. A Maltese cross-pattern spherulite crystal was observed in the PVDF/PMMA coating film, which became more apparent with increasing PVDF content. The highest corrosion protection performance was achieved with 60 wt.% PVDF-coated carbon steel, and delamination and corrosion reactions were observed for 20 wt.% PVDF-coated carbon steel. Further, corrosion protection performance with an amorphous/crystal mixture (PVDF/PMMA, 60/40 (w/w)) was better than those observed in the amorphous domain and the perfect-crystal domain of the PVDF/PMMA blended coating system.
Electrochemical migration phenomenon is correlated with ionization of anode electrode, and ionization of anode metal has similar mechanism with corrosion phenomenon. In this work, in-situ water drop test and evaluation of corrosion characteristics for SnPb solder alloys in $Na_2SO_4$ solutions were carried out to understand the fundamental electrochemical migration characteristics and to correlate each other. It was revealed that electrochemical migration behavior of SnPb solder alloys was closely related to the corrosion characteristics, and Sn Ivas primarily ionized in ${SO_4}{^2-}$ solutions. The quality of passive film formed at film surface seems to be critical not only for corrosion resistance but also for electrochemical migration resistance of solder alloys.
In this study, the electrochemical properties of CP-Ti (commercially pure titanium) and Ti-64 (Ti-6Al-4V) were evaluated and the effect of hydrofluoric acid on corrosion resistance and electrochemical properties was elucidated. Additive manufactured materials were made by DMT (Directed Metal Tooling) method. Samples were heat-treated for 1 hour at $760^{\circ}C$ and then air cooled. Surface morphologies were studied by optical microscope and SEM. Electrochemical properties were evaluated by anodic polarization method and AC-impedance measurement. The oxide film formed on the surface was analyzed using an XPS. The addition of HF led to an increase in the passive current density and critical current density and decreased the polarization resistance regardless of the alloys employed. Based on the composition of the oxide film, the compositional difference observed by the addition of HF was little, regardless of the nature of alloys. The Warburg impedance obtained by AC-impedance measurement indicates the dissolution of the constituents of CP-Ti and Ti-64 through a porous oxide film.

Southern exposure test specimens were used to evaluate corrosion performance of epoxy-coated reinforcing bars in chloride contaminated concrete by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy method. The test specimens with conventional bars, epoxy-coated bars and corrosion inhibitors were subjected 48 weekly cycles of ponding with sodium chloride solution and drying. The polarization resistance obtained from the Nyquist plot was the key parameter to characterize the degree of reinforcement corrosion. The impedance spectra of specimens with epoxy-coated bars are mainly governed by the arc of the interfacial film and the resistance against the charge transfer through the coating is an order of magnitude higher than that of the reference steel bars. Test results show good performance of epoxy-coated bars, although the coatings had holes simulating partial damage, and the effectiveness of corrosion-inhibiting additives. The corrosion rate obtained from the impedance spectroscopy method is equivalent to those determined by the linear polarization method for estimating the rate of corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete structures.
Electrochemical study on cut edge corrosion of prepainted Zn coated (GI) and 55%Al-Zn coated (GL) steels has been performed in wet-dry cyclic conditions. Maximum width of delaminated polymer coating from the cut edge for GI and GL specimens was evaluated under wet-dry cyclic conditions. The cyclic tests were carried out for 1000 h by changing of relative humidity, where the salt of NaCl was deposited on the specimen every 48 h. The cut edge corrosion test under NaCl deposit indicated that the delamination of the GL specimen progresses at a higher rate than the GI. The electrochemical corrosion monitoring was also performed under condition of alternate exposure to immersion in NaCl solution and drying at 60%RH and $25^{\circ}C$. On the basis of the results of the delamination tests and electrochemical measurements, the mechanism of cut edge corrosion for GI and GL were discussed.
We have been studying application of electrochemical noise (Fluctuation) analysis for localized corrosion. Foils of Zinc, Aluminum and Magnesium were used as specimens for electrochemical cell simulating localized corrosion. These specimens were dipped in sodium chloride solutions adjusted to each exponent of Hydrogen ion concentration (pH) condition of 5.5, 10, 12 respectively. Time variations of potential and current were measured in those solutions, and simultaneously the surfaces of specimens were observed using microscope with television monitor. Two types of electrochemical cells were arranged for experiments simulated localized corrosion. The fluctuations on trendy component of short-circuited potential and short-circuited current were appeared in synchronization. It was seemed that these fluctuations result from hydrogen evolution on the aluminum active site in the crevice from the microscopic observation. In the case of zinc and magnesium, fluctuations appeared on the trendy component of the corrosion potential. Two types fluctuation were detected. First one is the fluctuation varied periodically. The second one is the random fluctuation. It was seemed that these fluctuations result from generation of corrosion products and hydrogen evolution on the active site in the crevice of zinc and magnesium from the microscopic observation.
The electrochemical characteristics of Al-Si casting alloys (Al-10%Si, Al-9%Si, Al-7%Si) in 3.5% NaCl solution at room temperature was studied using potentiodynamic techniques. The electrochemical values of corrosion potential($E_c$), corrosion current density($I_c$) and corrosion rate(mpy) were examined. The Al-Si alloys had several compounds such as $Mg_2Si$, ${\pi}$-$Al_8Si_6Mg_2Fe$ and $Al_2CuMg$ which could affect corrosion resistance significantly. The potentiodynamic polarization curve exhibited typical active behavior in anodic polarization curve. The major corrosion mechansim for the Al-Si alloys were pitting and grain boundary corrosion. As increasing Si and Cu contents, their corrosion resistance was decreased.

This paper reviews available techniques for monitoring corrosion of steel in concrete. The need for early detection and diagnosis of corrosion related deterioration in reinforced structures is widely acknowledged. This is particularly important in reinforced concrete structures on account of the economic and social significance of the problem. The current generally used on-site procedure for corrosion monitoring of reinforced structures employs a method of half-cell surface potential measurements. While the technique has provided a useful means of delineating areas of high or low corrosion risk, there are difficulties in its use and interpretation when assessing rates of deterioration. Electrochemical techniques are by far the most suitable for corrosion monitoring purpose and meet most of the requirements. The aim of this paper is to describe the electric resistance sensor(ER sensor) and electrochemical techniques employed to monitor and estimate corrosion rates of reinforcement. Early detection and diagnosis of corrosion hazards allows preventive measures to be taken, hence the typically expensive repair of severely deteriorated structures can be avoided.
Portland cement incorporating supplementary cementing material develops excellent mechanical properties and long term durability characteristics. India is a leading rice producing country and rice husk is considered as waste in the rice milling industries. In this present work, the rice husk ash (RHA) was added to concrete as cement replacement from 0 to 30%. Corrosion performance of reinforcing steel embedded in RHA blended concretes was studied using linear polarization, AC impedance and gravimetric methods. The corrosion rate of steel bars embedded in RHA concretes were compared with control concrete. The results clearly indicate that the corrosion rate of reinforcing steel embedded in concrete is significantly reduced with the incorporation of RHA. A good correlation among gravimetric method and electrochemical methods was observed. Electrochemical impedance study showed 98 percentage reduction in corrosion rate to the RHA blended concrete with 15% replacement than control concrete.
