  • Coolant rubber hoses for automotive radiators can degrade under thermal and mechanical loadings and thus fail owing to the influences of locally formed electricity. In this study, an advanced test method was developed to simulate the failure of a rubber hose. The aging behavior of carbon-black-filled ethylene-propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber used as a radiator hose material under a combination of electrochemical stresses and tensile strain was analyzed. The changing behaviors of the current and the resistance as a function of the aging time were analyzed in consideration of the tensile strain, voltage, and aging temperature. Sectioned specimens clarified the failure mechanisms of the aged skin layer under the combined electrochemical stresses.

  • The nitrogenated diamond-like carbon (NDLC) exhibits high electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity that are similar to the properties shown by diamond-like carbon (DLC) films. These diamond-like transparent properties in NDLC come in a material consisting of $sp^2$-bonded carbon versus the $sp^3$-carbon of DLC. The diamond-like properties and nondiamond-like bonding make NDLC an attractive candidate for applications. Liquid crystal (LC) alignment capabilities with ion beam exposure on NDLC thin films and electro-optical (EO) performances of the ion-beam-aligned twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD) with oblique ion beam exposure on the NDLC thin film surface were studied. An excellent uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with the ion beam exposure on the NDLC thin films was observed. In addition, it can be achieved that the good EO properties of the ion-beam-aligned TN-LCD. Finally, we will present the residual DC property of the ion-beam-aligned TN-LCD on the NDLC thin film surface.

  • The present work deals with second order statistics of post buckling response of piezoelectric laminated composite cylindrical shell panel subjected to hygro-thermo-electro-mechanical loading with random system properties. System parameters such as the material properties, thermal expansion coefficients and lamina plate thickness are assumed to be independent of the temperature and electric field and modeled as random variables. The piezoelectric material is used in the forms of layers surface bonded on the layers of laminated composite shell panel. The mathematical formulation is based on higher order shear deformation shell theory (HSDT) with von-Karman nonlinear kinematics. A efficient $C^0$ nonlinear finite element method based on direct iterative procedure in conjunction with a first order perturbation approach (FOPT) is developed for the implementation of the proposed problems in random environment and is employed to evaluate the second order statistics (mean and variance) of the post buckling load of piezoelectric laminated cylindrical shell panel. Typical numerical results are presented to examine the effect of various environmental conditions, amplitude ratios, electrical voltages, panel side to thickness ratios, aspect ratios, boundary conditions, curvature to side ratios, lamination schemes and types of loadings with random system properties. It is observed that the piezoelectric effect has a significant influence on the stochastic post buckling response of composite shell panel under various loading conditions and some new results are presented to demonstrate the applications of present work. The results obtained using the present solution approach is validated with those results available in the literature and also with independent Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS).

  • Various manufacturing technologies, including over-molding and insert-injection molding, are used to produce hybrid plastics and metals. However, there are disadvantages to these technologies, as they require several steps in manufacturing and are limited to what can be reasonably achieved within the complexities of part geometry. This study aims to determine a practical approach for producing metal/plastic hybrid components by combining plastic injection molding and metal die casting to create a new hybrid metal/plastic molding process. The integrated metal/plastic hybrid injection molding process developed in this study uses the proven method of multi-component technology as a basis to combine plastic injection molding with metal die casting into one integrated process. In this study, the electrical conductivity and ampacity were verified to qualify the new process for the production of parts used in electronic devices. The electrical conductivity was measured, contacting both sides of the test sample with constant pressure, and the resistivity was measured using a micro ohmmeter. Also, the specific conductivity was subsequently calculated from the resistivity and contact surface of the conductor path. The ampacity defines the maximum amount of current a conductive path can carry before sustaining immediate or progressive deterioration. The manufactured hybrid multi-components were loaded with increasing currents, while the temperature was recorded with an infrared camera. To compare the measured infrared images, an electro-thermal simulation was conducted using commercial CAE software to predict the maximum temperature of the power loaded parts. Overall, during the injection molding process, it was demonstrated that multifunctional parts can be produced for electric and electronic applications.

  • Despite orthodontic treatment(tooth moving) is dynamic act many orthodontists have used mainly static evaluation method for evaluating effectiveness of the orthodontic appliances. They want to find which is better appliance, especially in the treatment results and treatment period when they chose one appliance from sugessted appliances for obtaining same treatment goal. The author and colleagues invented and manufactured new machine for getting information about the relative effectiveness from many suggested orthodontic appliances and we named it Calorific machine. We used this Calorinc machine to find the relative differences about tooth moving mechanism and tooth moving time between the Burstone's PLA(single force mechanism) and Molar-up's PLA(couple mechanism) for correcting the posterior cross bite. We measured the distance of tooth moving on the occlusal X-ray film and recorded the moving time of the anchored(control elctro-thermal tooth) and lingually tipped lower second molars(experimental electro-thermal tooth) and then processed paired t-est by SAS program. The results were as follows. 1. Molar-up's PLA showed more extrusive and horizontal movement than Burstone's PLA at the lingually tipped molar(p=0.0000). 2. There is no finding of tooth movement by Molar-up's PLA at the uprighted molar(p=o.3475) but Burstone's PLA showed a little change(0.2 m) at the same molar(p=0.0001). 3. Burstone's PLA took 17.8 minutes for tooth moving but Molar-up's PLA took only 3.8 minutes(p=0.0001)

  • It is essential that second order nonlinear optical materials have low optical propagation losses in the wavelengths of second harmonic generation for practical applications in waveguides. Three dipolar chromophores substituted with nitro, cyano, and alkyl sulfone as an electron withdrawing group were prepared. The UV-Vis absorption spectra of the cyano and alkylsulfone chromophores showed a blue-shift compared to the nitro chromophore. The introduction of oxadiazole segment in the chromophore structure led to similar spectral shift. The blue-shift can produce low optical loses at second harmonics. The chromophores were successfully attached to a polyimide, yielding side chain polymers. The nonlinear optical property of the prepared optical polymers was determined by measuring electro-optic coefficient at 1.55 mm. The polymers exhibited high glass transition temperature of over $185^{\circ}C$ and thermal stability to $300^{\circ}C$ through differential scanning calorimeter analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis.

  • In the non-conductive adhesives (NCAs) for adhesion of micro electro mechanical system (MEMS), there are some problems such as delamination and cracking resulting from the large differences of coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) between NCAs and substrates. So, the addition of inorganic particles such as silica and nano clay to the CTEs composit have been applied to reduce the CTEs of the adhesives. Additions of the flexibilizers such as siloxanes have also been performed to improve the flexibility of epoxy composite. Amino modified siloxane (AMSs) were used to improve compatibility between epoxy and siloxane. In this study, glass transition temperatures (Tg) and moduli of those composites were measured to confirm the effects of AMS with two different equivalents on thermal/mechanical properties of AMS/epoxy composites. Tg of KF-8010/epoxy composites decreased from 148 to $122^{\circ}C$ and those of X-22-161A/epoxy composites decreased from 148 to $121^{\circ}C$. Moduli of KF-8010/epoxy composites decreased from 2648 to 2143 MPa by adding KF-8010 and moduli of X-22-161A/epoxy composites decreased from 2648 to 2014 MPa. In short, using long Si-O chain AMS leads to a greater decrease in moduli. However, haven't showed significant differences in Tg's.

  • We have investigated reliable inspection methods for finding the defects generated during the manufacturing process of lightweight, large-aperture satellite telescope mirrors using silicon carbide, and we have measured the basic physical properties of the mirrors. We applied the advanced ceramic material (ACM) method, a combined method using liquid-silicon penetration sintering and chemical vapor deposition for the carbon molded body, to manufacture four SiC mirrors of different sizes and shapes. We have provided the defect standards for the reflectors systematically by classifying the defects according to the size and shape of the mirrors, and have suggested effective nondestructive methods for mirror surface inspection and internal defect detection. In addition, we have analyzed the measurements of 14 physical parameters (including density, modulus of elasticity, specific heat, and heat-transfer coefficient) that are required to design the mirrors and to predict the mechanical and thermal stability of the final products. In particular, we have studied the detailed measurement methods and results for the elastic modulus, thermal expansion coefficient, and flexural strength to improve the reliability of mechanical property tests.

  • The plasma damage free and room temperature processedthin film deposition technology is essential for realization of various next generation organic microelectronic devices such as flexible AMOLED display, flexible OLED lighting, and organic photovoltaic cells because characteristics of fragile organic materials in the plasma process and low glass transition temperatures (Tg) of polymer substrate. In case of directly deposition of metal oxide thin films (including transparent conductive oxide (TCO) and amorphous oxide semiconductor (AOS)) on the organic layers, plasma damages against to the organic materials is fatal. This damage is believed to be originated mainly from high energy energetic particles during the sputtering process such as negative oxygen ions, reflected neutrals by reflection of plasma background gas at the target surface, sputtered atoms, bulk plasma ions, and secondary electrons. To solve this problem, we developed the NBAS (Neutral Beam Assisted Sputtering) process as a plasma damage free and room temperature processed sputtering technology. As a result, electro-optical properties of NBAS processed ITO thin film showed resistivity of $4.0{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}m$ and high transmittance (>90% at 550 nm) with nano- crystalline structure at room temperature process. Furthermore, in the experiment result of directly deposition of TCO top anode on the inverted structure OLED cell, it is verified that NBAS TCO deposition process does not damages to the underlying organic layers. In case of deposition of transparent conductive oxide (TCO) thin film on the plastic polymer substrate, the room temperature processed sputtering coating of high quality TCO thin film is required. During the sputtering process with higher density plasma, the energetic particles contribute self supplying of activation & crystallization energy without any additional heating and post-annealing and forminga high quality TCO thin film. However, negative oxygen ions which generated from sputteringtarget surface by electron attachment are accelerated to high energy by induced cathode self-bias. Thus the high energy negative oxygen ions can lead to critical physical bombardment damages to forming oxide thin film and this effect does not recover in room temperature process without post thermal annealing. To salve the inherent limitation of plasma sputtering, we have been developed the Magnetic Field Shielded Sputtering (MFSS) process as the high quality oxide thin film deposition process at room temperature. The MFSS process is effectively eliminate or suppress the negative oxygen ions bombardment damage by the plasma limiter which composed permanent magnet array. As a result, electro-optical properties of MFSS processed ITO thin film (resistivity $3.9{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, transmittance 95% at 550 nm) have approachedthose of a high temperature DC magnetron sputtering (DMS) ITO thin film were. Also, AOS (a-IGZO) TFTs fabricated by MFSS process without higher temperature post annealing showed very comparable electrical performance with those by DMS process with $400^{\circ}C$ post annealing. They are important to note that the bombardment of a negative oxygen ion which is accelerated by dc self-bias during rf sputtering could degrade the electrical performance of ITO electrodes and a-IGZO TFTs. Finally, we found that reduction of damage from the high energy negative oxygen ions bombardment drives improvement of crystalline structure in the ITO thin film and suppression of the sub-gab states in a-IGZO semiconductor thin film. For realization of organic flexible electronic devices based on plastic substrates, gas barrier coatings are required to prevent the permeation of water and oxygen because organic materials are highly susceptible to water and oxygen. In particular, high efficiency flexible AMOLEDs needs an extremely low water vapor transition rate (WVTR) of $1{\times}10^{-6}gm^{-2}day^{-1}$. The key factor in high quality inorganic gas barrier formation for achieving the very low WVTR required (under ${\sim}10^{-6}gm^{-2}day^{-1}$) is the suppression of nano-sized defect sites and gas diffusion pathways among the grain boundaries. For formation of high quality single inorganic gas barrier layer, we developed high density nano-structured Al2O3 single gas barrier layer usinga NBAS process. The NBAS process can continuously change crystalline structures from an amorphous phase to a nano- crystalline phase with various grain sizes in a single inorganic thin film. As a result, the water vapor transmission rates (WVTR) of the NBAS processed $Al_2O_3$ gas barrier film have improved order of magnitude compared with that of conventional $Al_2O_3$ layers made by the RF magnetron sputteringprocess under the same sputtering conditions; the WVTR of the NBAS processed $Al_2O_3$ gas barrier film was about $5{\times}10^{-6}g/m^2/day$ by just single layer.

  • The characteristics of high heat input (342kJ/cm) EG (Electro Gas Arc) welded joint of EH36-TM steel has been investigated. The weld metal microstructure consisted of fine acicular ferrite (AF), a little volume of polygonal ferrite (PF) and grain boundary ferrite (GBF). Charpy impact test results of the weld metal and heat affected zone (HAZ) met the requirement of classification rule (Min. 34J at $-20^{\circ}C$). In order to evaluate the relationship between the impact toughness property and the grain size of HAZ, the austenite grain size of HAZ was measured. The prior austenite grain size in Fusion line (F.L+0.1 mm) was about $350{\mu}m$. The grain size in F.L+1.5 mm was measured to be less than $30{\mu}m$ and this region was identified as being included in FGHAZ(Fine Grain HAZ). It is seen that as the austenite grain size decreases, the size of GBF, FSP (Ferrite Side Plate) become smaller and the impact toughness of HAZ increases. Therefore, the CGHAZ was considered to be area up to 1.3mm away from the fusion line. Results of TEM replica analysis for a welded joint implied that very small size ($0.8\sim1.2{\mu}m$) oxygen inclusions played a role of forming fine acicular ferrite in the weld metal. A large amount of (Ti, Mn, Al)xOy oxygen inclusions dispersed, and oxides density was measured to be 4,600-5,300 (ea/mm2). During the welding thermal cycle, the area near a fusion line was reheated to temperature exceeding $1400^{\circ}C$. However, the nitrides and carbides were not completely dissolved near the fusion line because of rapid heating and cooling rate. Instead, they might grow during the cooling process. TiC precipitates of about 50 ~ 100nm size dispersed near the fusion line.
