  • Magnetotelluric (MT) survey investigates electrical structure of subsurface by measuring natural electromagnetic fields on the earth surface. For the accurate interpretation of MT data, the precise three-dimensional (3-D) modeling algorithm is prerequisite. Since MT responses are affected by electrical anisotropy of medium, the modeling algorithm has to incorporate the electrical anisotropy especially when analyzing time-lapse MT data sets, for monitoring engineered geothermal system (EGS) reservoir, because changes in different-vintage MT-data sets are small. This study developed a MT modeling algorithm for the simulation MT responses in the presence of electrical anisotropy by improving a pre-existing staggered-grid finite-difference MT modeling algorithm. After verifying the developed algorithm, we analyzed the effect of vertical transversely isotropic (VTI) anisotropy on MT responses. In addition, we are planning to extend the applicability of the developed algorithm which can simulate not only the horizontal transversely isotropic (HTI) anisotropy, but also the tiled transversely isotropic (TTI) anisotropy.

  • The light efficiency of fringe-field switching (FFS) mode when using a liquid crystal (LC) with positive dielectric anisotropy was found to be dependent on the magnitude of dielectric anisotropy, such that the lower dielectric anisotropy, the higher. We studied out not only light efficiency but also response time according to dependence on the magnitude of dielectric anisotropy. Rising and decay time became fast and slow respectively according to decreasing the magnitude of dielectric anisotropy. This paper investigates electro-optical characteristic of FFS mode using LC with a positive dielectric anisotropy dependent on the magnitude of dielectric anisotropy of the LC.

  • Properties of porosity, compressional wave velocity, velocity anisotropy, electrical resistivity, and resistivity anisotropy are measured and calculated for two DSDP clay-rich hemipelagic sequences in the northwestern Pacific. Velocity and resistivity increase with burial depth at the expense of decreasing porosity. Profiles of velocity anisotropy and resistivity anisotropy show almost the same trend. Horizontally developed low aspect ratio pores may generate velocity and resistivity anisotropy. The preferred orientation of clay minerals is also believed to be responsible for the observed anisotropy.

  • The voltage-dependent transmittance curve of a homogeneously aligned liquid crystal (LC) cell driven by fringe-electric field(named FFS mode) was studied, while changing dielectric anisotropy of a LC. The results show that for a LC with positive dielectric anisotropy while positioning at initial position. Therefore, we conclude that the dynamic stability is strongly dependent on the types of the LCs and voltage-dependent dynamics of the LC with negative dielectric anisotropy is staler than that of the LC with positive dielectric anisotropy in the FFS mode.

  • It was known that chalcogenide glasses have the superior property of the photoinduced anisotropy(PA). In this study we observed the phenomenon of Ag polarized-photodoping in chalcogenide As$_{40}$ /Ge$_{10}$/Se$_{15}$ /S$_{35}$ and the double-layer of Ag doped As$_{40}$ /Ge$_{10}$/Se$_{15}$ /S$_{35}$ thin film using the irradiation with the polarized He-Ne laser light. The Ag polarized-photodoping results in reducing the time of saturation anisotorpy and increasing the sensitivity of linearly anisotropy intensity up to maximum 220% The Ag polrized-photodoping shows improvement of the photoinduced anisotropy property in polarized photodoping of the chalcogenide thin film. It will offer lots of information for the photodoping mechanism and analysis of chalcogenide thin film.in film.ilm.

  • The effect of anisotropy field on the high frequency magnetic characteristics of FeTaN films was investigated. Those films show good magnetic properties : 4$\pi$Ms of 13KG, Hc of 0.6 Oe, effective permeability(${\mu}$') of 800 with a stable frequency response up to 800MHz. The films also show a large anisotropy field(Hk) over 21Oe. It result from the increased anisotropy of patterned FeTaN films. The combination of high saturation magnetization and relatively high Hk in these films is believed to the partly responsible for FeTaN for the excellent high-frequency behavior.

  • This paper deals with the characteristics analysis of Synchronous Reluctance (SynRM) with anisotropy rotor using a coupled FEM & Preisach model. The focus of this paper is the design relative to the output power on the basis of rotor materials of a SynRM. The coupled Finite Elements Analysis (FEA) & Preisach model have been used to evaluate nonlinear solutions. Comparisons are given with characteristics of normal synchronous reluctance motor and those of anisotropy rotor SynRM (ANISO-SynRM), respectively.

  • We have studied the transmittance of fringe-filed switching(FFS) using a liquid crystal with positive dielectric anisotropy. Generally, FFS having positive dielectric anisotropy has less transmittance than FFS using negative dielectric anisotropy. FFS mode transmittance depends on horizontal director deformation, however fringe filed is composed of vertical and horizontal field. Vertical field in the middle of electrode suppresses the transmittance of FFS mode, especially when we use positive one. So, it is important to prevent the LC director from the effect of vertical field. We changed the splay elastic constant and checked the transmittance. The transmittance of FFS having positive dielectric anisotropy was improved. Less tilted LC directors improve the transmittance of FFS using positive dielectric anisotropy. We can improve the transmittance by using LC which have high splay elastic constant when another LC properties are equal.

  • We find a metastable vortex state of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy free layer in spin transfer torque magnetic tunneling junctions by using micromagnetic simulations. The metastable vortex state does not exist in a single layer, and it is only found in the trilayer structure with the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy polarizer layer. It is revealed that the physical origin is the non-uniform stray field from the polarizer layer.

  • We report on the photoalignment process of pentacene thin film with optical anisotropy on treated buffer layers. The photopolymer, showing an anchoring transition, was used as a buffer layer to control the structural order of the pentacene molecules. Using the photoelastic modulator, it was found that the grain size and the optical anisotropy of the pentacene thin film were strongly correlated with each other.
