  • In a hyper-connected society, electric power infrastructures and information and communication infrastructures are the core of critical national infrastructures. However, electric power infrastructure is very deadly to high-frequency nuclear electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) threats recently issued by North Korea, so the resilience through rapid recovery after attack is directly related to the survivability of our country. Therefore, electric power infrastructure should take precedence over any other key infrastructure, with preemptive protection measures and fast recovery plans. In this paper, the characteristics of the HEMP threats was examined, and the risks and effective major protection measures of the electric power infrastructures are discussed. In the future, it is expected that it will be able to help establish the direction of enactment and revision of legal schems related to the 'high power EMP infringement prevention' for Korea's electric power infrastructures.

  • The perception of earthquake in Korea has changed due to the earthquake that occurred in Gyeongju and Pohang, and the earthquake has become an important factor in infrastructure management. Damage to infrastructures in the event of an earthquake is extensive. In particular, damage to infrastructures that perform public function used to spread to the whole area. From the point of view of earthquake disaster prevention, it is very important for the public to define what infrastructures are important management targets and to prepare a countermeasure. In this study, we propose a method to evaluate the importance of infrastructure to effectively manage infrastructures for earthquakes. For this purpose, important factors for the railway bridges, power generation and electric power facilities, and apartment complexes are suggested. AHP analysis is conducted to suggest priorities. In addition, the evaluation criteria for infrastructure importance are presented.

  • The internet of things (IoT) technology is a key component for the advent of 4th industrial revolution, which is the network of home appliances, infrastructures, and vehicles to remotely investigate these systems. For the operation of compact IoT devices, batteries are widely used as electric power, and the limited lifetime of batteries inevitably leads to periodic replacement. Magneto-mechano-electric (MME) generators may be alternatives to batteries inside the IoT devices by converting stray magnetic field into electric energy, since we are always surrounded by ambient alternating current (AC) magnetic fields induced from electric power transmission lines everywhere. This article reviews the recent domestic research progress in high-performance MME generators and their application field for IoT and electronic devices.

  • Increase in power consumption can cause a serious stability problem of an electric power system without construction of new power plants or transmission lines. Also, it can generate large power loss of the system. In costly and environmentally effective manner to avoid constructing the new infrastructures such as power plants and transmission lines, etc, the distributed generation(DG) has paid great attentions so far as a solution for the above problem. Selection of optimal location and size of the DG is the necessary process to maintain the stability and reliability of existing system effectively. However, the systematic and cardinal rule for this issue is still open question. In this paper, the method to determine optimal location of the DG is proposed by considering power loss when the DG is connected to an electric power grid. Also, optimal size of not only the corresponding single DG but also the multi-DGs is determined with the proposed systematic approach. The IEEE benchmark 30-bus test system is analyzed to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • The world has been replacing fast fossil fuels vehicles with electric vehicles(EVs) to cope with climate change. The government set a goal which EVs will be substitute at least 10% of the domestic small vehicles with EVs until 2020, and will try to build electric charging infrastructures in apartments with the revision the law of 'the housing construction standards'. In apartments the EVs charging infrastructure and parking space is, essential to accomplish the goal. But the studies on EVs demand are few. In this study, we predicted that the demand for EVs using time-series analysis of statistical data, survey results for apartments residents in the metropolitan area. As a result, the ratio of the EVs appeared to be 6~21% for the total vehicles in a rental apartments for the years 2020, 21~39% in apartments for sales. For the EVs, the maximum power required for 1,000 households in rental apartment is predicted to be about 4200 kwh on a daily basis, while the maximum power in the apartment for sales is predicted to be 7800kwh.

  • With response to the critical issue of global warming, Smart Grid system has been extensively investigated as next efficient power grid system. Domestically, Korean is trying to expand the usage of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and the charging infrastructure in order to replace the current transportation using fossil fuels holding 20% of overall CO2 emission. The EVs charging infrastructures are combined with IT technologies to build intelligent environments but have considerable number of cyber security issues because of its inherent nature of the technologies. This work not only provides logical architecture of EV charging infrastructures with security threats based on them but also analyses security requirements against security threats in order to overcome the adversarial activities to Smart Grid.

  • In this paper, economic loss due to high power electromagnetic pulse is estimated and the methodology used for calculating its impacts is suggested using a macro approach. In order to investigate the most critical infrastructure for the high power electromagnetic pulse assault, the vulnerability assessment that provides information on the threats of concern is conducted. As a result, this study concentrates on the electric power networks. The presented assessment model is considered with gross domestic product (GDP) and energy consumption when the electric power networks are damaged due to high power electromagnetic pulse. In addition, economic losses are calculated by the extent of damages considering different types of the high power electromagnetic pulse assault generated by nuclear and man-made weapon. Through the estimation of these damages, the resulted economic loss will be compared with the protection cost. Consequently, protection of the vulnerable infrastructures can be prepared against electromagnetic pulse attack.

  • Through this paper, we studied on the basic concept of vibration-induced power generation for urban infrastructures. Since the travelling of automobiles on the bridge cause vibration, it is possible to convert the vibration energy into green-electric energy by utilizing magnetic induction technology. In this paper we define the concept of green-bridge vibration power generation system which contains the concept of magnetic induction technology and propose a vibration power generation device for converting the bridge vibration energy into the electric energy. Also, an experiment was held by applying the vibration power generator on a real bridge. The results showed the applicability and effectiveness of the vibration power generator.
