Experimental Verification of Electric Vehicle Using Electric Double Layer Capacitor

  • This paper discusses to conduct experimental verification of two types of micro electric vehicles (EV) in order to realize improvement in electric mileage and shorten a charging time of the battery. First, electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) systems to use as a secondary battery are proposed. The internal resistance of EDLC is small compared with a rechargeable battery, and it is suitable for momentary charge-discharge of EV. Next, control circuits of the capacitors to increase the regenerative electric power are utilized. Then, a novel method to charge a main battery of the EV is introduced. Finally, experimental results demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.

  • 전기이중층 커패시터용 활성탄의 정전 용량 향상을 위해 우레아를 이용해 활성탄 표면에 펩티드 결합을 유도하였다. 우레아 도입에 따른 활성탄은 소성과정을 거쳐 안정화되었으며, 전기화학적 특성을 순환전류 전압법을 이용하여 정전 용량을 관찰하고, 임피던스를 통해 저항 변화를 관찰하였으며, 충방전 평가를 통해 싸이클 성능을 관찰하였다. 결과적으로 질소성 작용기의 도입으로 정전 용량은 기존 탄소재에 비해 약 22.9%의 향상을 이루었으며, 저항 감소 및 우수한 싸이클 성능을 나타냄을 확인하였다.

Preparation and Characterization of Carbon Nanotubes-Based Composite Electrodes for Electric Double Layer Capacitors

  • In this work, we prepared activated multi-walled carbon nanotubes/polyacrylonitrile (A-MWCNTs/C) composites by film casting and activation method. Electrochemical properties of the composites were investigated in terms of serving as MWCNTs-based electrode materials for electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs). As a result, the A-MWCNTs/C composites had much higher BET specific surface area, and pore volume, and lower volume ratio of micropores than those of pristine MWCNTs/PAN ones. Furthermore, some functional groups were added on the surface of the A-MWCNTs/C composites. The specific capacitance of the A-MWCNTs/C composites was more than 4.5 times that of the pristine ones at 0.1 V discharging voltage owing to the changes of the structure and surface characteristics of the MWCNTs by activation process.

Structure and EDLC Characteristics of Pitch-based Activated Carbons

  • In this work, the activated carbons (ACs) with high porosity were synthesized from pitch by KOH chemical activation. The structure and surface properties of ACs were characterized by means of elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). And, the influence of the KOH-to-pitch ratio on the porosity of the ACs was investigated using the nitrogen adsorption isotherms at 77 K and a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). As a result, pitch could be successfully converted into ACs with well-developed micro and mesopores. The specific surface areas and pore volumes were increased with an increase of the KOH-to-pitch ratio. Furthermore, it was found that the addition of KOH led to the transformation of the micropores to the meso- and macropores. In the application to electric double layer capacitors (EDLC), the pitch-based ACs showed a higher capacitance per weight and per volume, and an excellent electrochemical stability in the high voltage region.

페놀계 활성탄소섬유 전극과 수용성 전해질을 사용하는 전기이중층 캐패시터의 비축전용량 특성 (Specific Capacitance Characteristics of Electric Double Layer Capacitors with Phenol Based Activated Carbon Fiber Electrodes and Aqueous Electrolytes)

  • 고비표면적의 활성탄소섬유(ACF: activated carbon fiber)를 분극성 전극으로 이용한 전기이중층 캐패시터(electric double layer capacitor)의 단위 cell test를 통하여, ACF의 비표면적, 세공의 크기 및 전기전도도가 캐패시터의 비축전용량에 커다란 영향을 미치고 있음을 확인할 수 있었고, 전해질은 $H^+$ 이온을 함유한 $H_2SO_4$이 가장 좋은 축전용량을 나타내었으나, 집전체 부식 등의 문제로 인하여, 실용화에 있어서는 우수한 충방전 거동을 나타낸 KOH계 전해질이 적당한 것으로 확인되었다. 분극성 전극으로 사용되는 ACF를 탄화 또는 후활성화 등이 후처리를 통하여 비축전용량을 급격히 증가시킬수 있었고, 3만회까지의 연속 충방전 실험에서 전기이중층 캐패시터는 2차전지에서는 찾아 볼 수 없는 매우 높은 충방전 효율과 긴 사용수명을 가지는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

  • 본 연구에서는 헥사 메틸렌 테트라민을 촉매로 사용하여 이소프로판올에서 레소시놀과 퍼푸랄을 졸-겔 중축합한 후 이소프로판올 동결 건조 조건에서 유기 겔을 직접 건조시킨 후 질소 분위기에서 탄화시켜 탄소 에어로겔을 제조하였다. 탄소 에어로겔의 제조 조건은 퍼푸랄에 대한 레소시놀의 몰비를 변경하여 조사하였다. 탄소에어로겔의 기공 구조에 대한 제조조건의 영향은 질소 흡착 등온선에 의해 고찰하였다. 탄소 에어로겔의 특성은 주사전자현미경과 적외선 분광법을 가지고 측정하였다. 전기 이중층 커패시터에서 전극으로서의 탄소 에어로겔의 기공 접근성과 성능을 전기 화학적으로 고찰하였다. 결과적으로 BET 표면적과 비용량은 R/C 비율에 따라 증가하였으며, 765 ㎡/g 및 132 F/g의 최대 값은 각각 R/C 비율 200에서 달성되었다. 결론적으로 R/C 비율을 높이면 CA 전극의 평균 기공 크기가 증가하여 시스템의 속도 성능이 향상됨을 확인하였다.

공융 갈륨-인듐 액체금속 전극 기반 전기이중층 커패시터 (An Electric Double-Layer Capacitor Based on Eutectic Gallium-Indium Liquid Metal Electrodes)

  • Gallium-based liquid metal, e.g., eutectic gallium-indium (EGaIn), is highly attractive as an electrode material for flexible and stretchable devices. On the liquid metal, oxide layer is spontaneously formed, which has a wide band-gap, and therefore is electrically insulating. In this paper, we fabricate a capacitor based on eutectic gallium-indium (EGaIn) liquid metal and investigate its cyclic voltammetry (CV) behavior. The EGaIn capacitor is composed of two EGaIn electrodes and electrolyte. CV curves reveal that the EGaIn capacitor shows the behavior of electric double-layer capacitors (EDLC), where the oxide layers on the EGaIn electrodes serves as the dielectric layer of EDLC. The oxide thicker than the spontaneously-formed native oxide decreases the capacitance of the EGaIn capacitor, due to increased voltage loss across the oxide layer. The EGaIn capacitor without oxide layer exhibits unstable CV curves during the repeated cycles, where self-repair characteristic of the oxide was observed. Finally, the electrolyte concentration is optimized by comparing the CV curves at various electrolyte concentrations.

전기이중층 캐패시터 내의 전하분포 고찰 (Investigation of Charge distribution in an Electric double layer capacitor)

  • The use of the pulsed electro acoustic (PEA) method allowed us to perform the direct observations of spatio-temporal charge distributions in Electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs) based on polarizable nanoporous carbonaceous electrode. The negative charge density became the maximum, about 205 C/$m^3$ at the region where was near to collector layer in EDLCs for case $V_{DC}$ = 2.5 V, while the positively charged density became the maximum, about 61.1 C/$m^3$ at the region where it was located around the cathode layer. The PEA measurement used here is a very useful method to quantitively investigates the spatio-temporal charge distribution in EDLCs.
