  • This paper presents plastic limit loads and approximate J-integral estimates for circumferential part-through surface crack at the interface between elbows and pipes. Based on finite element limit analyses using elastic-perfectly plastic materials, plastic limit moments under in-plane bending are obtained and it is found that they are similar those for circumferential part-through surface cracks in the center of elbow. Based on present FE results, closed-form limit load solutions are proposed. Welds are not explicitly considered and all materials are assumed to be homogeneous. And the method to estimate the elastic-plastic J-integral for circumferential part-through surface cracks at the interface between elbows and straight pipes is proposed based on the reference stress approach, which was compared with corresponding solutions for straight pipes.

  • Welded joint generally has heterogeneity of strength, material, and fracture toughness and it is important to understand the characteristics of material strength and fracture of welded joint considering heterogeneous effect. Characteristics of strength and fracture of an undermatched joint under dynamic loading was studied by round-bar tension tests and thermal elastic-plastic analyses in this paper. The strength and fracture of the undermatched joints should be evaluated based on the effects of the strain rate and the temperature including temperature rise during the dynamic loading. The differences of fracture characteristics like such as ductile-to-brittle transition behavior are well precisely explained from the stress-strain distribution obtained by numerical analysis.

  • Elastic-Plasitc Finite element analysis is peformed about the TiN coated medium. The normal contact is simulated by a rigid asperity pressing the surface of an elastic-plastic half-surface. The case of a surface film stiffer than the substrate is considered, and general solutions for the subsurface stress and deformation fields are presented for several coating thickness. Additionally, the critical normal loads for deformation in the substrate and coating fracture are calculated when the yield of TiN film follows the Maximum Principal Stress Theory and Von Mises Theory. The results can be subsumed in failure maps for TiN thin film on steel.

  • 초록 The validity, of a single parameter such as stress intensity, factor K or J-integral in traditional fracture mechanics depends strongly on the geometry, and loading condition. Therefore the second parameter like T-stress measuring the stress constraint is additionally needed to characterize the general crack-tip fields. While many, research works have been done to verify, the J-T description of elastic-plastic crack-tip stress fields in plane strain specimens, limited works (especially. for bimaterials) have been performed to describe the structural surface crack-front stress fields with the two parameters. On this background, via detailed three dimensional finite element analyses for surface-cracked plates and straight pipes of homogeneous materials and bimaterials under various loadings, we investigate the extended validity or limitation of the two parameter approach. We here first develop a full 3D mesh generating program for semi-elliptical surface cracks, and calculate elastic T-stress from the obtained finite element stress field. Comparing the J-T predictions to the elastic-plastic stresses from 3D finite element analyses. we then confirm the extended validity of fracture mechanics methodology based on the J-T two parameters in characterizing the surface crack-front fields of welded plates and pipes under various loadings.

  • The reactor pressure vessel is usually cladded with stainless steel to prevent corrosion and radiation embrittlement, and number of subclad cracks have been found during an in-service-inspection. Therefore assessment for subclad cracks should be made for normal operating conditions and faulted conditions such as PTS. Thus, in order to find the optimum fracture assessment procedures for subclad cracks under a pressurized thermal shock condition, in this paper, three different analyses were performed, ASME Sec. XI code analysis, an LEFM(Liner elastic fracture mechanics) analysis and an EPFM(Elastic plastic fracture mechanics) analysis. The stress intensity factor and the Maximum $RT_{NDT}$ were used for characterizing. Analysis based on ASME Sec. XI code does not completely consider the actual stress distribution of the crack surface, so the resulting Maximum allowable $RT_{NDTS}$ can be non-conservative, especially for deep cracks. LEFM analysis, which does not consider elastic-plastic behavior of the clad material, is much more non-conservative than EPFM analysis. Therefore, It is necessary to perform EPFM analysis for the assessment of subclad cracks under PTS.

  • The mechanical properties of alkali resistance (AR) glass fiber reinforced cement(GFRC) under different curing conditions were investigated in this study. The specimens were formed by extrusion process, and then steam cured and autoclaved. An autoclaved specimen showed the elastic-brittle behavior up to 4% of fiber volume fraction. However, it was found that the fracture behavior for cured specimen was changed to the elastic-plastic with crack branches fracture at greater than 3 vol.% of fiber.

  • Numerical calculations are made in order to find a possible correlation between the J-integral and the crack mouth opening displacement(CMOD) in dynamic nonlinear fracture experiments of 3-point bend(3PB) specimens. Both elastic-plastic and elastic-viscoplastic materials are considered at different impact velocities. The J-integral may be estimated from the crack mouth opening displacement which can be measured directly from photographs taken during dynamic experiments.

  • This paper provides approximate J estimates for off-centred, circumferential through-wall cracks in cylinders under bending and under combined tension and bending. The proposed method is based on the reference stress approach, where the dependence of elastic and plastic influence functions of J on the cylinder/crack geometry, the off-centred angle and strain hardening is minimised through the use of a proper normalising load. Based on published limited FE results for off-centred, circumferential through-wall cracks under bending, such normalising load is found, based on which the reference stress based J estimates are proposed for more general cases, such as for a different cylinder geometry and for combined loading. Comparison of the estimated J with extensive FE J results shows overall good agreements for different crack/cylinder geometries and for combined tension and bending, which provides sufficient confidence in the use of the proposed method to fracture mechanics analyses of off-centred circumferential cracks. Furthermore, the proposed method is simple to use, giving significant merits in practice.

  • This paper is to provide some of the analysis procedures of the FAD(Failure Assessment Diagram), which is applied th the safety test of the atomic pressure vessels and other structures. Harrison proposed R-6 Diagram, and Bloom developed the method of DPFAD(Deformation Plasticty Failure Assessment Diagram). Analysis of J-integration of the plastic materials give the failure test curve for the materials with serious work hardening effect. J value was obtained form both FEM(Finite Element Mothod) and the experiment using compact type specimen for J=JIC, and the results were compared. In this study, the results of analysis using DPFAD and the factors affecting DPFAD in Static fatigue and fracture were reviewed. It was shown that the concept of DPFAD can be applied to test the safety of the structures.

  • Caustics method has been applied successfully to determine the fracture parameters such as stress intensity factor and the J-integral for elastic and/or elastic-plastic stress field around the crack tip. For stress fields at the vicinity of crack tip in the creep domain, no experimental report concerning fracture mechanics parameters by using the caustics method has been published up to date. This study investigated creep behavior at the vicinity of crack tips at high temperature($175^{\circ}C$) and attempted to determine of proper fracture parameters for A1 5086 H24 specimens by using the caustics method. The results obtained from the limited experimental investigation are as follows; $J_{th}/J_{caus}$ is found to approach to 1 more rapidly than $K_{th}/K_{caus}$ does during incipient period(within 80 minutes). It is confirmed that experimental $K_{caus}$ approached to theoretical $K_{th}$ after 80 minutes by analyzing the ratio of $K_{th}$ to $K_{caus}$. Unlike the case of room temperature, it is confirmed experimentally that caustics diameter enlarged gradually even the distance between specimen and screen keeps constant. It showed that initial curve of the caustics was initially located in the plastic zone, but it grew out rapidly into the elastic zone for Al 5086 H24 at $175^{\circ}C$. It is confirmed that caustics is a function of time, temperature and distance between specimen and screen at high temperature.
