  • Based on the ferroelectric microstructural residual stress model, the relation between grain size and residual elastic energy was proposed. It was found that the residual elastic energy increased with decreasing grain size by modeling and DSC results. This residual elastic energy change with grain size which induce the phase transituion mode change was the cause of a diffuse phase transition in small grain size.

  • Functionally graded materials graded continuously and discretely, and are modeled using modified Mori- Tanaka and self-consistent methods. The proposed micromechanics model accounts for multi-phase heterogeneity and arbitrary number of layers. The influence of geometries and distinct elastic material properties of each constituent and voids on the effective elastic properties of FGM is investigated. Numerical examples of different functionally graded materials are presented. The predicted elastic properties obtained from the current model agree well with experimental results from the literature.

  • This paper presents a part of micormechanics-based elastic modeling (Lee and Pyo, 2007) of particle-reinforced composites containing slightly weakened interfaces. The Eshelby's tensor for a damaged ellipsoidal inclusion to model particles with slightly weakened interfaces is incorporated into a micormechanical formulation by Ju and Chen (1994). A damage model in accordance with the Weibull's probabilistic function is also developed to simulate the progression of weakened interface in the composites.

  • Macroscopic hot spots formed due to the large thermal gradients at the surface of the disc brake rotor, make the rotor to fail or wear out early. Thermo-elastic deformation results in contact concentration, leading to the non uniform distribution of temperature making the disc susceptible to hot spot formation. The formation of one hot spot event will predispose the system to future hot spotting at the same location. This leads to the complete thermo-elastic instability in the disc brakes; multitude parameters are responsible for the thermo elastic instability. The predominant factor is the sliding velocity and above a certain sliding velocity the instability of the brake system occurs and hot spots is formed in the surface of the disc brake. Commercial finite element package ABAQUS(R) is used to find the temperature distribution and the result is validated using Rowson's analytical model. A coupled analysis methodology is evolved for the automotive disc brake from the transient thermo-elastic contact analysis. Temperature variation is studied under different sliding speeds within the operation range.

  • In this study, a two dimensional model of receding contact problem has been analyzed using finite element method (FEM) based software ANSYS and ABAQUS. For this aim finite element modeling of elastic layer and two homogeneous, isotropic and symmetrical elastic quarter planes pressed by means of a rigid circular punch has been presented. Mass forces and friction are neglected in the solution. Since the problem is examined for the plane state, the thickness along the z-axis direction is taken as a unit. In order to check the accuracy of the present models, the obtained results are compared with the available results of the open literature as well as the results of two software are compared using Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and good agreements are found. Numerical analyses are performed considering different values of the external load, rigid circular radius, quarter planes span length and material properties. The contact lengths and contact stresses of these values are examined, and their results are presented. Consequently, it is concluded that the considered non-dimensional quantities have noteworthy influence on the contact lengths and contact stress distributions, additionally if FEM analysis is used correctly, it can be an efficient alternative method to the analytical solutions that need time.

  • The objective of this study is to model and simulate the nonlinear lubrication performance of the sliding part between the piston and cylinder wall in a hydrostatic swash-plate-type axial piston pump. A numerical algorithm is developed that facilitates simultaneous calculation of the rotating body motion and fluid film pressure to observe the fluid film geometry and power loss. It is assumed that solid asperity contact, so-called mixed lubrication in this study, invariably occurs in the swash-plate-type axial piston pump, which produces a higher lateral moment on the pistons than other types of hydrostatic machines. Two comparative mixed lubrication models, rigid and elastic, are used to determine the reaction force and sliding friction. The rigid model does not allow any elastic deformation in the partial lubrication area. The patch shapes, reactive forces, and virtual local elastic deformation in the partial lubrication area are obtained in the elastic contact model using a simple Hertz contact theory. The calculation results show that a higher reaction force and friction loss are obtained in the rigid model, indicating that solid deformation is a significant factor on the lubrication characteristics of the reciprocating piston part.

  • This paper presents a modeling method for the vibration analysis of rotating cantilever beams considering the elastic foundation effect. Mass and stiffness matrices are derided explicitly by considering coupling effect between stretching and bonding motion. Numerical results show that the bending direction elastic foundation stiffness influences the vibration characteristics significantly in practical range of beam configuration. The ranges of elastic foundation stiffness to avoid the dynamic buckling are also presented. The method presented in this paper can be used to predict the variations of natural frequencies of rotating cantilever beams with elastically restrained root.

  • This paper employs differential quadrature method (DQM) and nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT) for studying free vibrational characteristics of porous functionally graded (FG) nanoplates coupled by visco-elastic foundation. A secant function based refined plate theory is used for mathematical modeling of the nano-size plate. Two scale factors are included in the formulation for describing size influences based on NSGT. The material properties for FG plate are porosity-dependent and defined employing a modified power-law form. Visco-elastic foundation is presented based on three factors including a viscous layer and two elastic layers. The governing equations achieved by Hamilton's principle are solved implementing DQM. The nanoplate vibration is shown to be affected by porosity, temperature rise, scale factors and viscous damping.

  • The transverse vibration of double walled carbon nanotube (DWCNT) embedded in elastic medium with an initial imperfection is considered. In this paper, Timoshenko beam theory is employed. However the nonlocal theory is used for modeling the nano scale of nanotube. In addition, the governing Equations of motion are obtained utilizing the Hamilton's principle and simply-simply boundary conditions are assumed. Furthermore, the Navier method is used for determining the natural frequencies of DWCNT. Hence, some parameters such as nonlocality, curvature amplitude, Winkler and Pasternak elastic foundations and length of the curved DWCNT are analyzed and discussed. The results show that, the curvature amplitude causes to increase natural frequency. However, nonlocal coefficient and elastic foundations have important role in vibration behavior of DWCNT with imperfection.
