  • Active asteroids are celestial bodies that distinctively have asteroid-like orbital elements but show comet-like activity. They exhibit the activities due to the sublimation of volatile ices, impacts with small objects or break-up by rapid rotations. As of 2019 February, 30 active asteroids are detected in the outer main belt (i.e., the semimajor axes a>2.5 au) while only 3 of them in the inner main belt (a<2.5 au), suggesting that sublimation of remaining icy volatiles can be one of the most fundamental mechanisms for the activities. A sudden activity of (6478) Gault was reported in early 2019. The asteroid was discovered in 1988 and has exhibited its inactive appearance until the end of last year. Soon after the report, we have conducted imaging observations using the Seoul National University Observatory 1.0-m telescope and the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) to monitor the activity. The observed images showed a primary dust tail that consists of dust grains ejected early November in 2018. Later, another tail developed, indicating further dust ejection occurred around late December 2018. Our model simulation to reproduce the morphology of the dust cloud suggests that the slightly-curved primary dust tail results from a continuous dust ejection over weeks. The total mass of ejecta was estimated to XX kg (XX% of the asteroid mass). Such continuous dust ejection for the inner active asteroids was unexpected because ice might have already sublimated from subsurfaces of inner main belt. Based on our observational evidence, we will discuss how inner asteroids are activated and eject dust continuously.

  • This paper presents design and fabrication of optimized geometry structure of electrostatic inkjet head. In order to verify effect of geometry shape, we simulate electric field intensity according to the head structure. The electric field strength increases linearly with increasing height of the micro nozzle. As the nozzle diameter decreases, the electric field along the periphery of the meniscus can be more concentrated. We design and fabricate the electrostatic inkjet heads, hole type and pole type, with optimized structure. It was fabricated using thick-thermal oxidation and silicon micromachining technique such as the deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) and chemical wet etching process. It is verified experimentally that the use of the MEMS inkjet head allows a stable and sustainable micro-dripping mode of droplet ejection. A stable micro dripping mode of ejection is observed under the voltages 2.5 kV and droplet diameter is $10\;{\mu}m$.

  • Deformation analysis of injection molded articles whose geometry is considered as the assembly of thin flat plates has been conducted. For the in-mold analysis, thermo-viscoelastic stress calculation of thermo-rheologically simple amorphous polymer and in-mold deformation calculation considering the in-plane mold constraint have been done. Free volume theory has been used to represent the non-equilibrium density state during the fast cooling. At ejection, instantaneous deformation takes place due to the redistribution of in-mold residual stress. During out-of-mold cooling after ejection, thermoelastic model based on the effective temperature has been adopted for the calculation of out-of-mold deformation. In this study, emphasis is also made on the treatment with regard to lateral constraint types during molding process. Two typical mold geometries are used to test the numerical simulation modeling developed in this study.

  • Simulated experiments of high pressure melt ejection(HPME) are performed to measure the released fraction of corium simulant from the French type PWR cavity. The experiments are carried out on a 1/20th linear scaled model of the Ulchin 1&2 cavity. Water or woods metal and nitrogen is used as simulant of molten corium and steam, respectively. Experimental parameters are water mass, annulus area and breach size. It is shown that only breach size effects is very important while the mass and the annulus area do not affect the released fraction. It is found that the liquid film transport is much more dominant mechanism than the entrainment droplet transport, especially in linear scale down simulated HPME experiment.

  • This paper presents ejection of high viscosity fluids with magnetostrictive inkjet printhead(Magjet), which is not common with any other printhead. The MagJet uses a magnetostrictive material, Terfenol-D rod with 10-mm in diameter and 50-mm in length, as an actuation mechanism. It has been known that high viscosity is often an obstacle in ejecting small and mono-disperse droplets. We calculated required pressure with fluidic inertia (Bernoulli equation) and viscous loss (Hagen Poiseuille equation). The required pressure for ejecting a droplet is 1300kPa. The generated force and displacement with Terfenol-D rod are estimated to be 480N (2600kPa) and $28{\mu}m$, respectively. It was enough that Magjet eject high viscosity fluid (Max 1000cP). The experiments are performed to eject the high viscosity fluid with Magjet. The ejection of high viscosity fluids is successful with the aid of Terfenol-D's high performance.

  • The kidney vortex is the important factor adversely influencing film cooling effectiveness. In general, double jet film-cooling hole is designed to overcome the kidney vortex by generating anti-kidney vortices. In this study, the film cooling characteristics and the effectiveness of the double jet film cooling hole were numerically investigated with various area ratios of the first($A_1$) and second($A_2$) cooling hole($A_1/A_2$=0.8, 1.0, 1.25) and lateral ejection angle(${\alpha}$ = $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$) as the design parameters. The effects of lateral distance between the first and second row holes are investigated. Numerical study was performed by using ANSYS CFX with the shear stress transport(SST) turbulence model. The film cooling effectiveness and temperature distribution were graphically depicted with various flow and geometrical conditions.

  • The droplet ejection behavior from drop-on-demand printhead are investigated numerically for Newtonian and shear-thinning fluid. The numerical simulation is performed using a volume-of-fluid model. In this study, we compare the printable range in terms of Z number and pinch-off time for Newtonian and shear-thinning fluids. The printability range are found to be 1.08 $$\leq_-$$ Z $$\leq_-$$ 12.9 for Newtonian fluid and 0.8 $$\leq_-$$ Z $$\leq_-$$ 12.9 for shear-thinning fluid. However, air entrainment is observed during merging of primary and satellite droplet within the printability range. The pinch-off time of the shear-thinning fluid is apparently shorter compared to the corresponding Newtonian fluid due to shear-thinning effects and the differences in the pinch-off time is enlarged significantly when the capillary number is larger than 0.5.

  • An EHD (Electro-Hydro-Dynamic) jet for electrostatic inkjet head shows advantages to print micro-size patterns using various inks because it can generate sub-micron droplets and can use highly viscous inks. Thus, many researchers in industrial fields are concerned about the EHD jet in these days. Since the basic principle of the EHD jet is to form a droplet from an apex of meniscus at the end of the nozzle, the ejection mechanism can be changed by the shape of the meniscus. The stable ejection of the droplet is greatly affected by the shape of the meniscus which is also influenced by surface characteristics of the nozzle, electric potential and ink properties. Experiments have been performed using the nozzles with hydrophilic and hydrophobic coatings in this study. The hydrophobic nozzle forms the stable droplets in wider range of the electric potential than the hydrophilic nozzle does.

  • A numerical analysis was performed on the effect of the design parameters of a bubble jet type microactuator on its liquid flow characteristics. The numerical models included the ink flow from the reservoir, bubble formation and growth, ejection through the nozzle, and dynamics of the refilling process. Because the bubble behavior is a very important parameter for the overall actuator performance, the bubble growth and collapse phenomena in an open pool were simulated in the present study. The drop ejection and refill process were numerically predicted for various geometries of the nozzle, chamber, and restrictor of the bubble jet microactuator. The numerical results from varying the design parameters can help with predicting the performance and optimizing the design of a microactuator.

  • To investigate the effect of host egg color dimorphism on the vinous-throated parrotbill (Paradoxornis webbianus) - common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) interactions, we monitored breeding nests of vinous-throated parrotbills, and conducted model egg experiments, using two colors: white and blue. Of the 190 nests examined in this study, cuckoo parasitism occurred at 10 nests (8 blue and 2 white egg clutches, respectively), and only blue cuckoo eggs were found. This frequency was similar to the egg-color ratio of all host nests found (151 blue and 39 white egg clutches). Vinous-throated parrotbills showed high rejection rate towards both cuckoo eggs and model ones. There was a significant difference in rejection rates towards mimetic (blue) and non-mimetic (white) eggs in blue egg clutches. Mimetic eggs put in nests took significantly longer to be rejected than non-mimetic ones. The most common rejection method used by the hosts was egg ejection (puncture-ejection). The costs of ejecting non-mimetic eggs tended to be lower than those of ejecting mimetic eggs. These results indicate that egg-color dimorphism in this species favors the individuals having white egg clutches in terms of higher rejection rate and lower ejection costs of the parasitic eggs. This study also suggests that egg-color dimorphism of the vinous-throated parrotbill decreases the effect of cuckoo parasitism on host populations.
