  • An analytical model of liquid sloshing is developed to consider the energy-loss effect through a partially submerged porous baffle in a horizontally oscillating rectangular tank. The nonlinear boundary condition at the porous baffle is derived to accurately capture both the added inertia effects and the energy-loss effects from an equivalent non-linear drag law. Using the eigenfunction expansion method, the horizontal hydrodynamic force (added mass, damping coefficient) on both the wall and baffle induced by the fluid motion is assessed for various combinations of porosity, submergence depth, and the tank's motion amplitude. It is found that a negative value for the added mass and a sharp peak in the damping curve occur near the resonant frequencies. In particular, the hydrodynamic force and free surface amplitude can be largely reduced by installing the proper porous baffle in a tank. The optimal porosity of a porous baffle is near P=0.1.

  • Based on the boundary element method, the motion responses and transmission coefficients of a moored floating breakwater were investigated in oblique waves. To satisfy the outgoing radiation condition in the far field, the fluid domain was divided into inner and outer regions. The complete solution could be obtained by applying the matching conditions between the eigenfunction-based outer solution and BEM-based inner solution. Using the developed predictive tools, the wave exciting forces, added mass, damping coefficients, motion responses, and transmission coefficients were assessed for various combinations of breakwater configuration, wave heading, mooring cables properties, and wave characteristics. It was found that the transmission coefficient for a moored floating breakwater was closely dependent on the motion responses, which were greatly amplified at the resonant frequencies.

  • A Green's function approach based on the laminate theory is adopted for solving the two-dimensional unsteady temperature field and the associated thermal stresses in an infinite plate made of functionally graded material (FGM). All material properties are assumed to depend only on the coordinate x (perpendicular to the surface). The unsteady heat conduction equation is formulated into an eigenvalue problem by making use of the eigenfunction expansion theory and the laminate theory. The eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenfunctions obtained by solving an eigenvalue problem for each layer constitute the Green's function solution for analyzing the two-dimensional unsteady temperature. The associated thermoelastic field is analyzed by making use of the thermal stress function. Numerical analysis for a FGM plate is carried out and effects of material properties on unsteady thermoelastic behaviors are discussed.

  • In a linear dispersive system, the combined effect of water wave frnnsformations such as refraction, diffraction, shoaling, and reflection can be predicted by the mild-slope equation which was developed by Berkhoff (1972) using the Galerkin-eigenfunction method. In the derivation of the equation, he assumed a mild slope of the bottom $\nabla$h/kh << 1 (where $\nabla$ is the horizontal gradient operator, k is the wavenumber, and h is the water depth) and thus neglected second-order bottom effect terms proportional to O($\nabla$h)$^2$ and O($\nabla$$^2$h). • The interaction of incident monochromatic waves with a bottom-mounted vertical porous circular cylinder is investigated using the framework of the three-dimensional linear potential theory. The porosity of the circular cylinder is uniform vertically but varies in the circumferential direction. By adjusting the porosities of the circular cylinder, both the wave blocking performance of a porous semi-circular breakwater and the wave responses inside a circular harbor with an entrance are applied as calculation examples. It is found that the reflected waves, wave run-up, and wave forces are significantly reduced due to wall porosity, which are positive factors for a breakwater, and the amplification factor of a circular harbor at resonant frequencies is greatly reduced by a porous sidewall.

  • In this paper, the $2^{nd}$ order hydrodynamic force effect of heaving submerged circular cylinder is considered, with the linear potential theory. Boundary value problem (BVP) is expanded up to the $2^{nd}$ order by using of the perturbation method and the $2^{nd}$ order velocity potential is calculated by means of integral equation technique using the classical Green's function expressed in cylindrical coordinates. The method of solving BVP is based on eigenfunction expansions. With different cylinder heights and heaving frequencies, graphical results are presented. As a result of the study, the cause of oscillatory force pattern is analyzed with the occurrence of negative added mass when a top of the cylinder gets closer to the free surface.

  • An electromagnetic boundary-value problem of a tapered rectangular waveguide is rigorously solved based on eigenfunction expansion and the mode-matching method. Scattering parameters of the tapered rectangular waveguide are represented in a series form and calculated in terms of different rectangular waveguide combinations. Computation is performed to analyze reflection and transmission characteristics. Conductor loss by surface current density is also calculated and discussed.
