This paper presents the results of analytical invesstigation of the buckling behavior of thin-walled box-section column. Throughout this investigation, the single curve for finding the buckling stress at each effective slenderness ratio is derived by modification of the Rankine's formula. The applicable formula in the small slederness region is derived by considering the inelastic behavior of material. Additionally, the bifurcation criterion(slenderness ratio) which can distinguish between the local and overall buckling mode shapes is suggested by equating the local and overall buckling stresses. The overall buckling formula is closely concurrent with the experiments for the rectangular tubes.

Using NC or CNC machine tool, the unmanned automatic production system has been growing recently in the manufacturing field. Thus it is important to find out the machinability of cutting force, tool wear and surface roughness during the cutting process. It is necessary to find how to estimate the machinability for the effective cutting condition because of problem about cutting power, tool wear, cutting time and precision. This study was planned to discover the relations of tool wear by variations of roughness and derived to correlate the wear with the surface roughness on the cutting parameter(cutting force, flank wear, surface roughness, friction angle, shear angle, slenderness ratio) when the aluminum alloy was cut in turning.

In desingin plate bridges, the width-thickness ratio of flanges and webs are proportioned in such that the premature local buckling of flanges and webs prior to achievement of the full strength of plate-girders must be prevented. It is the common practive in most design codes that the flange local buckling strength and the web bend buckling strength are separately computed. In most practical plate girders, however, the flange buckles simultaneously when web bend-buckling occurs, vice versa. The primary purpose of the present study is to investigate the phenomenon, which may be called flange-web interactive buckling. Using the eight-node shell element available in the commercial multi-purpose program ABAQUS, the phenomenon was quantitatively investigated. Also presented are the effects of various factors such as the ratio of flange slenderness ratio to the web slenderness ratio, the ratio of flange width to the web depth, and the longitudinal stiffeners. A series of comparative studies with various design codes show that the present study provides more accurate and effective design basis in proportioning the flanges and webs.
The ultimate carrying capacity of axially loaded welded square box section members made of medium and high strength steels (nominal yield stresses varying from 345 MPa to 460 MPa), with large width-to-thickness ratios ranging from 35 to 70, is analyzed by finite element method (FEM). At the same time, the numerical results are compared with the predicted results using Direct Strength Method (DSM), modified DSM and Effective Yield Strength Method (EYSM). It shows that curve a, rather than curve b recommended in Code for design of steel structures GB50017-2003, should be used to check the local-overall interaction buckling strength of welded square section columns fabricated from medium and high strength steels when using DSM, modified DSM and EYSM. Despite all this, EYSM is conservative. Compared to EYSM and modified DSM, DSM provides a better prediction of the ultimate capacities of welded square box compression members with large width-thickness ratios over a wide range of width-thickness ratios, slenderness ratios and steel grades. However, for high strength steels (nominal yield strength greater than 460 MPa), the numerical and existent experimental results indicate that DSM overestimates the load-carrying capacities of the columns with width-thickness ratio smaller than 45 and slenderness ratio less than 80. Further, for the purpose of making it suitable for a wider scope, DSM has been modified (called proposed modified DSM). The proposed modified DSM is in excellent agreement with the numerical and existing experimental results.
In composite materials technology, the fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) have opened up new horizons in infrastructural engineering field for strengthening existing structures and components of structure. The Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets are well suited for RC columns to this application because of their high strength to weight ratio, good fatigue properties and excellent resistance to corrosion. The main focus of present experimental work is to investigate effect of shapes on axial behavior of CFRP wrapped RC columns having same cross-sectional area and slenderness ratio. The CFRP volumetric ratio and percentage of steel are also adopted constant for all the test specimens. A total of 18 RC columns with slenderness ratio four were cast. Nine columns were control and the rest of nine columns were strengthened with one layer of CFRP wrap having 35 mm of corner radius. Columns confined with CFRP wrap were designed using IS: 456:2000 and ACI 440.2R.08 provisions. All the test specimens were loaded for axial compression up to failure and failure pattern for each shaped column was investigated. All the experimental results were compared with analytical values calculated as per the ACI-440.2R-08 code. The test results clearly demonstrated that the axial behavior of CFRP confined RC columns is affected with the change in shapes. The axial deformation is higher in CFRP wrapped RC circular column as compared to square and rectangular columns. Stress-strain behaviour revealed that the yield strength gained from CFRP confinement was significant for circular columns as compare to square and rectangular columns. This behaviour may be credited due to effect of shape on lateral deformation in case of CFRP wrapped circular columns at effective confinement action.

Reinforced concrete column is an effective structural element to take advantage of high strength concrete. This paper presents an experimental and analytical strength of high strength concrete rectangular tied column sections under eccentric loading. The test variables are concrete strength, steel ratios, slenderness and eccentricity. The analytical results of the ACI's rectangular stress block, Zia's modified rectangular stress block, and a trapezoid block are compared with experimentally obtained data. It may be concluded that the trapezoid stress block provided the most reasonable column section capacities for high strength concrete columns.
This paper presents an experimental study on the effectiveness of simultaneous application of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and steel jacket in strengthening slender reinforced concrete (RC) column. The columns were 200 mm square cross section with lengths ranging from 1600 to 3000 mm. Ten columns were tested under axial load. The effects of the strengthening technique, slenderness ratio, cross-section area of steel angle and CFRP layer number were examined in terms of axial load-axial strain curve, CFRP strain, steel strip strain and steel angle strain. The experiments indicate that strengthening RC columns with combined CFRP and steel jacket is effective in enhancing the load capacity, ductility and energy dissipation capacity of RC column. Based on the existing models for RC columns strengthened with CFRP and with steel jacket, a design formula considering a slenderness reduction factor is proposed to predict the load capacity of the RC columns strengthened with combined CFRP and steel jacket. The predictions agree well with the experimental results.

The American Concrete Institute (ACI) 318-11 permits the use of the moment magnifier method for computing the design ultimate strength of slender reinforced concrete columns that are part of braced frames. This computed strength is influenced by the column effective length factor K, the equivalent uniform bending moment diagram factor $C_m$ and the effective flexural stiffness EI among other factors. For this study, 2,960 simple braced frames subjected to short-term loads were simulated to investigate the effect of using different methods of calculating the effective length factor K when computing the strength of columns in these frames. The theoretically computed column ultimate strengths were compared to the ultimate strengths of the same columns computed from the ACI moment magnifier method using different combinations of equations for K and EI. This study shows that for computing the column ultimate strength, the current practice of using the Jackson-Moreland Alignment Chart is the most accurate method for determining the effective length factor. The study also shows that for computing the column ultimate strength, the accuracy of the moment magnifier method can be further improved by replacing the current ACI equation for EI with a nonlinear equation for EI that includes variables affecting the column stiffness and proposed in an earlier investigation.

In this study, inelastic buckling strength of HSA800 steel columns were tested to investigate the applicability of current column curve (KBC2009, 2010 AISC-LRFD) to HSA800 steel. Key test variables included width-thickness ratio, plate-edge restraints, and column slenderness ratio. Specimens made of ordinary steel (SM490) were also tested for comparison purposes. All the concentrically loaded HSA800 specimens exhibited sufficient buckling strength compared to the current column curve, but some of SM490 specimens showed understrength. This difference can be explained by the lower residual stress present in HSA800 specimens.

The structural provisions of rectangular CFT (concrete-filled tubular) columns in the 2005/2010 AISC Specification, ACI 318-08, and EC4 were comparatively analyzed as a preliminary study for establishing the unified standards for composite structures. The provisions analyzed included those related to the nominal strength, the effect of confinement, plate slenderness, effective flexural stiffness, and the material strength limitations. Small or large difference can be found among the provisions of AISC, ACI, and EC4. Generally, the 2010 AISC Specification provides the revised provisions which reflect up-to-date test results and tries to minimize the conflict with the ACI provisions. For example, the 2010 AISC Specification introduced a more finely divided plate slenderness limits for CFT columns. In seismic applications, the plate slenderness limits required for highly and moderately ductile CFT columns were separately defined. However, the upper cap limitations on material strengths in both the AISC and EC4 provisions are too restrictive and need to be relaxed considering the high-strength material test database currently available. This study found that no provisions reviewed in this paper provide a generally satisfactory method for predicting the P-M interaction strength of CFT columns under various material combinations. It is also emphasized that a practical constitutive model, which can reasonably reflect the stress-strain characteristics of confined concrete of rectangular CFT columns, is urgently needed for a reliable prediction of the P-M interaction strength.
