  • Dynamic compaction has evolved as an acceptable method of site improvement by treating poor soils in situ. The method is often an economical alternative for utilizing shallow foundations and preparing subgrades for construction when compared with conventional solutions. In general, the installation purpose of dynamic compaction are to increase bearing capacity and decrease differential settlement within a specified depth of improvement. This method involves the s systematically dropping large weights onto the ground surface to compact the underlying ground. The weights used on dynamic compaction projects have been typically constructed of steel plates, sand or concrete filled steel shells, and reinforced concrete. Typically, weights range from 5-20 ton and base configurations are, circular or octagonal. In this study, the effective depth of improvement is evaluated based on the numerical analysis code, the dynamic analysis of FLAC-3D program, in order to analyze the influence parameters ; ground conditions, maximum applied load and the area of compaction plate.

  • The data of the agricultural water quality survey network was analyzed between from 1990 to 2010 in order to propose effective plans for water quality management by analyzing the characteristics of agricultural lakes and the change of water quality. The result of the analysis shows that there is a correlation between water quality and items that can be a function of water depth such as dam height, dam length, dam height/dam length ratio and active storage/surface area of lake ratio. This means that, Korean agricultural lakes, there is a correlation between water quality and water depth. Water quality of the lakes that have lower than 5m of active storage/surface area of lake ratio (effective water depth) especially tends to get worse rapidly. The Chl-a and COD concentration of Korean agricultural lakes have a tendency to increase between June and September. Therefore, we recommend first taking a water quality improvement project for the lakes preformed watershed management project, and taking a preventive short-term water quality improvement project for the unperformed lakes before June among lakes that have lower than 5m of effective water depth.

  • Dynamic compaction is a ground improvement technique which is particularly effective for loose granular soils. It has also been used successfully to the cohesive soils with high void ratio, and wastes and fills. For the design of dynamic compaction method, prediction of depth of improvement is very important. The depth of improvement is influenced not only by compaction energy but also by many parameters such as grid spacing, soil property, degree of saturation and site conditions. Based on the test results, the depth of improvement were evaluated with considering compaction energy, soil type and ground water level.

  • When addressing rural housing issues, it is crucial to consider various aspects and adopt a tailored approach that takes into account the local characteristics and specific needs. Providing guidelines for different stakeholders, whether residents themselves or experts involved in decision-making, is essential for effective management and improvements. In this study, an in-depth analysis of the housing situation in the target area where the rural housing improvement project was implemented was conducted. This involved engaging with residents from three villages through in-depth interviews to gain insights into their perspectives and needs. As a result, a set of housing improvement guidelines were developed, which are specific to each stakeholder group and are tailored to address the criteria of safety, aesthetics, and living environment. These guidelines facilitate informed decision-making by residents and experts alike, ensuring that improvements align with the unique circumstances of each situation, promoting a more holistic and effective approach to addressing rural housing challenges.

  • The construction timeline for earthworks can be significantly reduced by substituting the conventional layer-by-layer compaction using a vibratory roller with single-layer compaction through the rapid impact compaction (RIC) method. Dynamic load compaction is well-suited for coarse-grained soils like sand. However, as the supply of sand, the primary reclamation material, becomes scarcer, the utilization of soil with fines is on the rise. To implement the dynamic load compaction, such as RIC, with reclaimed materials containing fines, it's imperative to determine the effective improvement depth. In this study, we assess the impact of the RIC method on the effective improvement depth for clean sand and public fill with fines, comparing field test results before and after RIC application. Our focus is on the cone resistance (qc) as it pertains to compaction quality control criteria. In conclusion, it becomes evident that standardizing the cone resistance is vital for the quality control of various reclaimed soils with fines. We have evaluated the compaction quality control criteria corresponding to a relative density (Dr) of 70% for clean sand as Qtn,cs = 110. As a result of this analysis, we propose new quality control criteria for qc, taking into account the fines content of reclaimed soils, which can be applied to RIC quality control.

  • A number of fallow paddies field continues to increase because of adverse agricultural circumstance such as upsurge income of foreign products, increase of labor costs in local community, imbalance between productivity and profitability etc. Such fallow paddies are necessary to be protected against weeds and trees. If fallow paddies are not managed, it will be devastated and needed cost for re-cultivation. Therefore, management of gradually increased fallow paddy fields should be conducted. In this study, the effect of plants growth inhibition and water quality purification through the control of flood in fallow paddy were examined in an experimental field. The managed and unmanaged fallow paddies through the control of water depth were constructed in the experimental field. The monitoring was conducted from 2005 to 2007. As the result, the managed fallow paddies were more effective than the unmanaged ones on the growth inhibition and water purification. In addition, when the fallow paddy is managed with regular water depth, it was the most effective in the plants growth inhibition.

  • Wool, silk and nylon 6 fabrics were treated with low-temperature plasma under atmospheric pressure of acetone/argon or helium/argon for 30 and 180 sec, and then dyed with leveling type acid dye, C.I. Acid Red 18 and milling type acid dye, C.I. Acid Blue 83. In spite of short time of the plasma treatment for thirty seconds, the color depth of wool fabrics was increased remarkably with both of the plasma gases, aceton/argon or helium/argon and with the kinds of dyes i.e., levelin type or milling type. But the atmosperic low-temperature plasmas did not increase the depth of silk and nylon 6 fabrics dyed with both of the acid dyes regardless of the teated time and plasma gases. It seems that low-temperature plasma by atmospheric-pressure discharge is effective for improvement of dyeing of wools as is the same way with the low-temperature plasma by glow discharge. The kinds of plasma gases and treated time did not influnce the depth of wool fabric pretreted with the atmosperic low-temperature plasmas.

  • An analysis model for predicting the tip bearing capacity of drilled shafts in cohesionless soils is improved in this study. The evaluation is based on large amounts of drilled shaft load test data. Assessment on the analysis model reveals a greater variation in two coefficients, namely, the overburden bearing capacity factor ($N_q$) and the bearing capacity modifier for soil rigidity (${\zeta}_{qr}$). These factors are modified from the back analysis of drilled shaft load test results. Different effective shaft depths and interpreted capacities at various loading stages (i.e., low, middle, and high) are adopted for the back calculation. Results show that the modified bearing capacity coefficients maintain their basic relationship with soil effective friction angle ($\bar{\phi}$), in which the $N_q$ increases and ${\zeta}_{qr}$ decreases as $\bar{\phi}$ increases. The suggested effective shaft depth is limited to 15B (B = shaft diameter) for the evaluation of effective overburden pressure. Specific design recommendations for the tip bearing capacity analysis of drilled shafts in cohesionless soils are given for engineering practice.
