Sea-eels caught by fishing boat and trawl were analyzed to investigate feeding status and individual growth of sea-eels caught from the lost plastic sea-eel Pot which is estimated at the ghost fishing Average length of sea-eel caught from fishing boat and test fishing was 33.6cm, 48.9cm for trawl and 45.6cm for the lost plastic sea-eel pot, respectively. The length frequency distribution is the same as the fact that sea-eel goes to the offshore from the coastal waters according to the getting growth. Sea-eel rate having empty stomach were 5.0% for fishing boat, 4.2% for trawl and the empty stomach rate of sea-eel was the highest as 87.6% in the lost pot. Sea-eel rate feeding fish as prey were 98.7% for fishing boat, 78.8% for trawl and 63.3% for the lost pot, respectively and other preys were crustacean and cephalopod. Fatness index calculated using weight and length were 1.514 for trawl catches and 1.292 for the lost pot and the difference was 15% between trawl catches and the lost pot. There also was difference at the 5% significance level in the result of t-test of Covariance Analysis.
Change in morphological and biological characteristics of Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, by maturation were determined by examination of 182 individuals collected in Korea waters from September to December 2014. Eels were classified into four stages based on the silvering index. The proportion of silver eels collected from streams and estuaries (34.6%) was higher than that from the freshwater reservoirs (3.8%). The sex ratio between female and male was 1:0.11 (n=182). Mean total length and weight were positively related to the silvering process. The ratios of head and pectoral lengths to total length and the ratio of horizontal and vertical orbital diameters to head length were significantly different between the maturation stages. However the ratio of pre-dorsal and pre-anal lengths to total length were not significantly different between the maturation stages. The gonado-somatic index was the single character that could identify the whole four stages among the indices examined: gonado-somatic index (GSI), condition factor (K), gut index (GI) and eye index (EI) but hepato-somatic index (HSI). One pseudo-silver eel collected. looked like a late silver eel in the S2 stage according to its external body color and morphology, but most of other characteristics suggested that it might be in Y1 (yellow eel) or Y2 stage (late yellow eel).

In the present study, we investigated the effects of rearing condition during the winter period on artificial maturation and reproduction of cultured female eel, Anguilla japonica. The female eel was adapted by combination of environmental conditions (seawater/low temperature, $10^{\circ}C$; seawater/high temperature, $20^{\circ}C$; freshwater/low temperature, $10^{\circ}C$; freshwater/high temperature, $20^{\circ}C$) during 8 weeks of the winter period. Then, the female eel cultivated by different conditions during the winter were transferred to seawater at $20^{\circ}C$ for induction of artificial maturation by salmon pituitary extraction (SPE) injection. The results shown that gonadosomatic index (GSI) and plasma levels of estradiol-$17{\beta}$ (E2) were significantly higher in female eel were reared in seawater than in freshwater, and were the highest at eel adapted by seawater/low temperature. Also, reproduction coefficient were higher in seawater/low temperature than in the other groups. These results will provide valuable information for elevation of the artificial maturation and reproduction coefficient in the cultured female eel.
To investigate the functional and immunological properties of the Ca-release channel in the sarcoplasmic reticulum(SR) of the eel skeletal muscle, $[^3H]ryanodine$ binding, SDS gel electrophoresis, $^{45}Ca\;release$ studies, and immunoblot assay were carried out in the SR of the eel skeletal muscle. Maximal binding sites(Bmax) and $K_D$ values of $[^3H]ryanodine$ for Ca-release channel of the SR of the eel skeletal muscle were $19.44{\pm}1.40\;pmole/mg$ protein and $15.55{\pm}1.69\;nM$, respectively. $[^3H]Ryanodine$ binding to RyR was increased by calcium and AMP. The SR of the eel skeletal muscle has two high molecular weight bands on the SDS PAGE. The mobility of upper band was more slower than the single band of the rabbit skeletal muscle, and that of the lower band was similar with the single band of canine cardiac muscle. Vesicular $^{45}Ca-release$ was activated by calcium. Ca-induced $^{45}Ca-release$ was significantly inhibited by $MgCl_2(2\;mM)$, ruthenium red$(10\;{/mu}M)$ or tetracaine(1 mM), but not by high concentration of calcium itself. AMP-induced $^{45}Ca-release$ was slightly occurred only in the absence of calcium, it was not inhibited by $MgCl_2$ or ruthenium red. Caffeine also increased $^{45}Ca-release$ from the SR vesicles, but it was not affected by $MgCl_2$ or ruthenium red. Polyclonal Ab against rat skeletal muscle RyR is reacted with that of rabbit, but not reacted with that of the eel skeletal muscle. These results suggested that ryanodine receptor of the SR of the eel skeletal muscle is showing some similar properties with that of mammalian skeletal muscle, but might be an another isotype channel having two bands which is less sensitive to AMP, not cross-reacted with antisera against rat RyR, and not inhibited by high concentration of calcium.

From 2017 to 2018, the disease has been monitored at four culturing eel farms in Incheon and Gyeonggi region in Korea. As a result, diseases with gill congestion frequently occurred. This disease occurred regardless of size of eel, but the frequency and cumulative mortality were high in eels within 3 months after stocking. The infected fish showed pathological histopathological features such as intense congestion and dilation in the central venous sinus (CVS) of gill filaments and hemorrhages in liver and kidney. Hexagonal viral particles measuring about 70 nm in diameter was observed in nuclei and cytoplasm of gill vascular endothelial cells. Molecular biologic diagnosis by both PCR and genetic analysis has been revealed that the causative agent of this disease is Japanese eel endothelial cells-infecting virus (JEECV), the cause of viral endothelial cell necrosis of eel (VECNE), which is mainly reported in Japan. This study is the first report on the characteristics of JEECV and VECNE infection in domestic eel farms.
Most of the downstream of the river is blocked by beams, so fishways are required for the movement of conciliatory fish species and connection with the upstream. Therefore, it is very important as an ecological pier that can help free movement of fish. The three previously installed eel ladders use only brushes on the bottom. For find out the effect of the bottom material except to brush, experimented used model glass eel ladders to the ascent of glass eel. The eel ladder model was 1.2 m length, 0.3 m wide, and 0.1 m high, and three gravels of different particles were attached to the bottom of the fish ladder setting on the Geumgang Estuary Bank. The first model ladder was made of gravel with particles of 5 mm, and the second model ladder was made of gravel with particles of 2 mm. The third model ladder was made by solidifying with particles of 1 mm or less cement. All experiments were repeated 5 times for 1 hour. As a result of the experiment, the lower the angle, and the smaller the gravel particles, the more glass eels are ascended to the ladder, but the made of cement was nearly not ascent. The gravel-bottom model ladder has a lower discharge and flow rate than the brush ladder so more glass eels can ascent ladder, and if the glass eel ladder is improved through experiments applying various floor materials and variables in the future, more glass eels are going to ascent glass eel ladder.

Upstream behavior of glass eels was examined in an experimental eel-ladder at a laboratory of the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute from March to May in 2008. The study was made under various environmental factors and conditions affecting the upstream migration of glass eels in order to design a functional ladder that would allow the passage of glass eels. The experimental eel-ladder consisted of an upper freshwater chamber and a lower sea water chamber; glass eels in sea water can move up to the upper freshwater chamber through the slope (eel-ladder) between them. The optimal condition of the eel-ladder was estimated by comparing the number of glass eels that moved upstream depending on various conditions. Since the glass eels actively moved up the slope to river water rather than to reservoir water or tap water, the experiment was realized using river water. A significantly higher number of glass eels moved up during the spring tide than during the neap tide, and during night than during the day. Upstream movement was significantly higher during high tide than during low tide. Glass eels effectively moved up through a slope of less than $30^{\circ}$ and water-flow velocity lower than 0.4 m/sec. The fish preferred a coarser ladder bed covered with small gravels, brush or carpet.

This study was conducted to estimate the number of lost or abandoned plastic sea-eel pots and investigate the actual condition on the ghost fishing happened from the pots during the period of August 1996 and January 2002 In the Southern Sea of Korea. The average number of lost or abandoned sea-eel pots in the investigated sea area were 34 ea/$\textrm{km}^2$ and was the lowest as 5 ea/$\textrm{km}^2$ Sea Area code # 113 and was the highest as 94 ea/$\textrm{km}^2$ in the Sea Area code #106. Pots number in accordance with water depth was the highest as 89 ea/$\textrm{km}^2$ on the level of 61 ~70m and there was no collection for the sea-eel pot over 130m water depth. The average catch rate of ghost fishing happened from the lost or abandoned pots was 8.1% and the highest rate was 25% in the Sea Area code #224 and there were no catches in the Sea Area code # 92, 110, 243 and 253. The number of lost or abandoned sea-eel pots continued ghost fishing were estimated as 14.2 ea/$\textrm{km}^2$ in the Sea Area code # 99 and was the highest. Catch rate of ghost fishing according to water depth was the highest as 23.5% on the level of 71~80 m, and the number of lost or abandoned sea-eel pots continued ghost fishing were estimated as 12.7 ea/$\textrm{km}^2$ on the level of 81~90m and was the highest. Length distribution of sea-eel which were caught from ghost fishing was 25.5~66.0$\textrm{cm}^2$

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the Quality characteristics, and was conducted to develope consumer preference of the frozen ready prepared eels by cooking method between 100 Korean (male 48, female 52) and 105 Japanese (male 43, female 62) who visited Korea. The consumers' responses about frozen ready prepared eels were measured on 9 point likert scale. In the preference test of cooking method for ready prepared eel, the Japanese and Korean preferred gas grill products in conger eel. Charcoal grill for Anguilla japonica products was estimated the most preferred cooking method by Japanese. In comparison between Japanese and Korean, Korean preferred more gas grill products than charcoal grill in Anguillajaponica products. The results for this factor were very significantly different in relation to appearance and overall acceptance of sensory characteristics (p<0.0l). The steaming products was estimated to be more delicious by Japanese than Korean. The results for this steaming products were very significantly different in evaluation of appearance, taste and overall acceptability between Japanese and Korean (p<0.05 or p<0.0l). In the domestic consumer test, the overall acceptability of eel product with ginseng and pine mushroom were 6.84 and 5.56 respectively. In the Japanese consumer test, the overall acceptability of eel product with ginseng and pine mushroom were 5.62 and 6.49 respectively. Consequently, Korea consumer preferred gas grill method for both conger eel and Anguilla japonica products added by ginseng flavor in sauce. Japanese preferred gas grill method for conger eel, charcoal grill method for Anguilla jap on ica added by pine mushroom flavor in sauce. Therefore, it is needed to study for the development of conger eel's sauce and cooking method proper to preference of Korean and Japanese in foodservice operations.

Shortfin eel (Anguilla bicolor pacifica) is a species of commercial importance and its production is greatly affected due to the infection by Heterosporis anguillarum. In this study, we evaluated the effect of H. anguillarum infection on the growth of Shortfin eel. A disease that trunk muscle of cultured shortfin eel, Anguilla bicolor pacifica, were irregular and resulted in death, breakout of the commercial eel culture farm. We observed that the trunk muscle of infected eels were irregular and represented white or yellowish externally. Histopathologically, a great numbers of large or small spores and sporophorocysts were also observed in degenerated muscle layer. The cloning of specific gene of H. anguillarum, encoding small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU-rRNA) was amplified by the polymerase chain reaction(PCR) from the muscle lesion of diseased eel. The size of clone gene is well matched with the size of small subunit ribosomal RNA of H. anguillarum and thus confirming the infection by H. anguillarum.
