A Study of the Reform of Mathematics Education for the Upper Secondary School in Japan

  • The COM curriculum provides first a core of mathematics for all students, and then offers opportunities for students to enter different streams of mathematics studies. The flexible curriculum (COM) is certainly welcome as it focuses on a transition from concrete to conceptual mathematics and on sequentially learning the power of mathematical language and symbols from simple to complex. This approach emphasizes the use of computers in mathematics education in the upper secondary grades. In Mathematics A, one unit is developed to computer operation, flow charts and programming, and computation using the computer. In mathematics B, a chapter addresses algorithms and the computer where students learn the functions of computers, as well as programs of various algorithms. Mathematics C allots a chapter for numerical computation in which approximating solutions for equations, numerical integration, mensuration by parts, and approximation of integrals. But, unfortunately, they do not have any plan for the cooperation study.

Some Implication of CPMP Developed Curriculum for Korean High School Mathematics Education -Focused on Algebra and Functions-

  • To educate students to adjust and lead their future society oriented on technologies and information communications, most of the countries in the world try to reform their traditional mathematics education. Contemporary Mathematics in Context (CMIC) developed by Core-Plus Mathematics Project in WMU has been developed in order to assist school districts in reforming their high schools mathematics programs in the United States, and $7^{th}$ Korean National Mathematics Curriculum was developed to guide reforming Korean mathematics program in 1997. In this presentation, by analyzing essential differences between the two curricula according to Korean Mathematics Curriculum, we may find some implications of CMIC for Korean mathematics education.

미래대학(未來大學)의 변화(變化)와 대학시설(大學施設)의 적합성(適合性) (The Perspectives of Future University and the Relevance of Educational Facilities)

  • The main theme of this paper is to evaluate the relevance of Educational Facilities in terms of university change in near future. The paper reviewed the changing process of higher education and its role in Korean society briefly, proposed the developmental directions of higher education in future in several perspectives, and introduced educational reform plan in the field of higher education proposed on May 30, 1995 by advisory group to the president. In this context, the irrelevance of university and college education facilities was pointed out, and proposed some new and modernizing guide lines of educational facilities such as flexibility, openness, corelationships and consortium among related institutes, optimization of related laws and rules, exemption from the direct ruling and control of government. This paper also suggested some ideas of facilitating educational facilities in accordance with the future change trends of university and college education.

  • National Education Information System (NEIS) is an ambitious reform project that can improve the competitiveness and performance of education field and to link administrational work of between schools and their senior administration offices via internet. NEIS is introduced to lighten the teachers' overburden, to standardize the work process and to bring better quality education to each classroom and make it possible for those involved in education to resolve any related educational problem on line. This paper aims to construct a hierarchy model consisting of key factors such as technological and administrative factors for the effective use of NEIS and to evaluate the relative importance among key factors using fuzzy AHP technique included fuzzy concepts. Eventually, the analysis results can be utilized to develop the future improvement strategy of NEIS and to satisfy the users.

Secondary Science Teachers' Employment Systemin China Mainland

  • This article presents how in China mainland a school and a school district find their science teachers. Based on studying relevant materials and years of intensive involvement in teacher education and recruitment practices the authors draw three features of the current secondary science teachers' employment system in China mainland: certification control conducted very loosely selection criteria and process vary with schools and school districts due to the remarkable difference existed among them the normal universities/colleges established originally only for secondary science teacher education still play a vital role in shaping effecting quality of teacher candidates although no one of them for a long time have focused on only doing what they were supposed to do. For further development, changes and essential reform are expected duo to the increasing promotion toward the internal quality of education and therefore high quality of teachers and teacher candidates.

The Social Effects of Higher Education Policy in South Korea: The Rise of the "Pig Mum" phenomenon

  • The contemporary educational system in South Korea is built on high-stakes standardised tests, a manifestation of the national project of social reconstruction and reform. One recent outcome is the emergence of an unfamiliar yet ubiquitous phenomenon: the "pig mum"; a Korean parent who is fully involved in organising, scheduling and managing the educational process from primary to secondary school for a group of children in a neighbourhood. Based on a quasimixed method utilizing a survey of a group of students and parents, this pilot study explores the "pig mum" phenomenon and its linkage to education policy. The authors conclude that the current educational policy fails to achieve the ideals it professes to value. This creates deep and negative societal norms that endanger a growing generation of students by creating a parallel private education market environment where "pig mums" thrive.

  • This paper aims to analyze China's political education, which plays a role of vehicle in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) promoting its ideological strategy, in order to figure out the utility of the CCP's ideological strategy. After Reform and Opening Up, the CCP rebuilt and reinforced political education in China according to its ideological strategy. Especially after the Tiananmen incident in 1989, the CCP made nationalism and patriotism as the core part of political education, and expanded its curriculum. Such reinforcement of political education has a advantage in maintaining the CCP's governance by creating a nationalist consensus against the western ideas. Although it can be helpful for the stability of domestic politics, it also has negative possibilities which isolate China in the global community and obstruct China's development.

Exploring the Exemplary STEAM Education in the U.S. as a Practical Educational Framework for Korea

  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in the U.S. has been identified as a significant national reform in K-16 education and curriculum in order to prepare students for the global economy of the 21st century. Korea has been facing very similar challenges to improve science, technology and mathematics education, in particular, the affective aspect of learning science and mathematics. Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education has become a crucial issue in Korean education system. The major purpose of this exploratory study is to inform the exemplary framework of STEAM education in the U.S. for Korea and to provide descriptive and analytical accounts on STEAM teaching and learning as an innovative integrated convergence education. This study integrates the outcomes of research papers on STEM education and recent literature. It employs content analysis methodology qualitatively by analyzing and synthesizing the findings, conclusions, discussions, and recommendations of accumulated research works related to STEM/STEAM education. This study will help gain a stronger sense of the STEAM framework and will guide to develop the educational programs for Korea.

충청북도 전문계 고등학교 운영 활성화 방안 연구 (A Study on the Operation Activation for Specialized High Schools in Chungcheongbuk-do)

  • 이 연구는 충청북도 내 전문계 고등학교의 제반 문제점을 파악하고 도내 기업체의 요구 사항을 반영하여 전문계 고등학교 운영 활성화 방안을 제시하는 데 목적이 있다. 도내 32개 전문계 고등학교 실과부장과 학과장을 대상으로 전문계 고등학교 학과 특성화 추진, 교사 교육, 교육과정 개편, 진로 지도 강화 방안 등에 대하여 설문지 조사를 실시하여 분석하였다. 또한, 충청북도 내 산업체의 인력 수요, 산업체에서 요구하는 직업 능력 조사를 위하여 중소기업을 대상으로 설문 조사를 하여 분석하였다.이 연구를 통하여 충청북도 전문계 고등학교 운영 활성화 방안을 다음과 같이 제시한다. 첫째, 산업체의 요구에 따라 전문계 고등학교 교육은 외국어 기초 능력과 컴퓨터 활용 능력에 더욱 치중하여 교육해야 한다. 둘째, 인근 산업체와 맞춤형 교육과정 운영을 더욱 확대 실시하여 취업률을 향상시켜야한다. 셋째, 전문계 고등학교 졸업생 중 80% 이상이 2년제와 4년제 대학에 진학할 경우 전문계 고등학교를 일반계 고등학교로 개편 운영하는 방안을 고려해야 한다. 네째, 오송 의료 단지와 오창 IT 공업 단지의 확장에 대비하여 BT, IT 관련 산업체에서 일할 수 있는 기초 지식을 갖출 수 있는 학과로 개편 운영해야 한다. 다섯째, 산업체 직원을 초빙 교사로 활용하고 학교장에게 교육과정 운영의 자율권을 주어야 한다. 여섯째, 공립학교 5년제 교사 순환 근무제를 전문계 고등학교 특성화학과에서는 10년 이상 근무로 바꾸어 그 학교의 주인 의식을 갖도록 해야 한다.

의료이용자의 보건의료제도 만족도와 변화 요구도 (Health Care System Satisfaction and Reform Need of Medical Users)

  • 본 연구는 2019년 의료서비스경험조사의 자료를 활용하여, 실제 의료를 이용한 사람들의 보건의료제도에 관한 만족도, 변화 요구도를 인구사회학적 요인 및 건강상태, 의료이용 경험에 따라 분석하고, 보건의료제도 신뢰도 및 만족도, 변화 요구도에 영향을 주는 요인을 알아보고자 하였다. 연구대상자는 20세 이상의 건강보험대상자 중 최근 1년 간 외래와 입원을 이용한 의료이용 경험자 8,349명으로 하였다. 분석은 독립표본 t-test 및 ANOVA, Scheffe 검증, 다중회귀분석을 실시하였다. 연구결과 의료이용자들의 보건의료제도에 대한 인지도는 신뢰도와 만족도에 비해 상대적으로 낮은 편이었다. 고연령층, 낮은 교육수준, 읍면지역, 비용부담 의료이용제한 경험자 등의 인지도가 낮아 이들에 대한 정책과 보건의료제도 홍보가 필요하다. 보건의료제도 신뢰도는 보건의료제도 만족도에 가장 큰 영향을 미치고 있으므로, 국민들이 신뢰할 수 있는 정책수립을 해야 하고, 이 과정에서 국민의 의견수렴과 사회적 합의의 과정을 거쳐 신뢰성을 확보해 나가야 할 것이다. 의료이용자들은 보건의료제도의 변화 필요성에 공감하고 있었고, 취약지역·취약계층에 대한 지원 필요성을 가장 크게 느끼고 있었다. 의료기관 입원 및 외래 이용의 만족은 보건의료제도에 대한 신뢰와 만족에 영향을 주고, 나아가 제도 개선에 대한 국민적 합의에 긍정적 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.
