  • It is the intention of this study to synthesize the effects of double-edge cracks on the dynamic characteristics of a beam. The stiffness matrix is first determined for a Timoshenko beam containing two same-line edge cracks. The presented model is then developed for elements with two parallel double-sided cracks, considering the interaction between the stress fields of adjacent cracks. Finally, a finite element code is implemented, to examine the influence of depth and location of double cracks, on the natural frequencies of the damaged system.

  • In this paper, to develop a smart CAD/CAM system for systematically performing from the 3-D solid shape design of products to the CNC cutting operation of products by a machining center, a B-Rep solid modeler is realized based on the half edge data structure. Because the B-Rep solid modeler has the various capabilities related to the solid definition functions such as the creation operation of primitives and the translational and rotational sweep operation, the solid manipulation functions such as the split operation and the Boolean set operation, and the solid inversion function for effectively using the data structure, the 3-D solid shape of products can be easily designed and constructed. Also, besides the automatic generation of CNC code, the B-Rep solid modeler can be used as a powerful tool for realizing the automatic generation of finite elements, the interfer- ence check between solids, the structural design of machine tools and robots and so on.

  • The effect of nearby cohesionless sloping ground on the uplift capacity of horizontal strip plate anchor embedded in sand deposit with horizontal ground surface has been studied numerically. The numerical analysis has been carried out by using the lower bound theorem of limit analysis with finite elements and linear optimization. The results have been presented in the form of non-dimensional uplift capacity factor of anchor plate by changing its distance from the slope crest for different slope angles, embedment ratios and angles of soil internal friction. It has been found that the decrease in horizontal distance between the edge of the anchor plate and the slope crest causes a continuous decrease in uplift capacity of anchor plate. The optimum distance is that distance between slope crest and anchor plate below which uplift capacity of an anchor plate has been found to decrease with a decrease in normalized crest distance from the anchor plate in presence of nearby sloping ground. The normalized optimum distance between the slope crest and the anchor plate has been found to increase with an increase in slope angle, embedment ratio and soil internal friction angle.

  • The cutout hole locating at the place of rib-to-diaphragm welded connection is adopted to minimize the restraint, which is caused by the floor-beam web to rib rotation at the support due to the unsymmetrical loads in orthotropic deck. In practice, an inevitable problem is that there is a large number of welding joint's cracks formed at the edge of cutout hole. In this study, a comparative experiment is carried out with two types of cutout hole, the circular arc transition and the vertical transition. The fatigue life estimation of specimens is investigated with the application of the structural hot spot stress approach by finite element analyses. The results are compared with the ones of the fatigue tests which are carried out on these full-scale specimens. Factors affecting the stress range are also studied.

  • A descriptive demonstration of the principles in the utilization of the two dimensional photoelasticimeter "TYPE ROBERT" is presented. This apparatus permits pointwise measures of the photoelastic chatacteristics in the bireferengerent materials. Two plate models are used to analyse the stress concentration effects around the hole, one in the state of plane stress, the other under the condition of distributed edge moments. For the latter case, stress freeze technique is adapted. Several slices are cut form the stress frozen model and photoelastically analysed. These same models are also analyzed by use of the finite element method. The photoelastic results show very good accordance with analytic solutions, while the finite element method looks less efficient for the particular problems treated.s treated.

  • This paper is to examine the applicability of ordinary Kriging interpolation(OK) to the p-adaptivity of the finite element analysis that is based on variogram. In the p-refinement, the analytical domain has to be refined automatically to obtain an acceptable level of accuracy by increasing the p-level non-uniformly or selectively. In case of non-uniform p-distribution, the continuity between elements with different polynomial orders is achieved by assigning zero higher-order derivatives associated with the edge in common with the lower-order derivatives. It is demonstrated that the validity of the proposed approach by analyzing results for stress singularity problem.

  • Finite element method was utilized to analyze crack tip stress and displacement field under drying stress case as stepwise loading. Opening mode of single-edge-notched model was employed and analyzed by linear elastic fracture mechanics of plane stress case. The drying stresses were applied as stepwise loads at the boundary elements of the model with 10 steps of time serial. The stress intensity factor($K_I$) for opening mode reached to its maximum just prior to the stress reversal. The $K_I$ from the displacement fields revealed 1.7 times higher than those from stress fields. By comparing the two sets of $K_I$ from displacement and stress fields, single parameter $K_I$ showed its validity to characterize displacement fields around the crack tip front while stress field could not be characterized due to large variations between two sets of data.

  • Results pertaining to 3D investigations on the effect of the thickness on the stress fields at the crack front are presented. A 3D finite element analysis is performed using a modified single edge-notched tension specimen configuration, with an inclined crack to include mixed mode I-II. A technique to mesh the crack front (3D) with singular finite elements in ANSYS without using third party software is introduced and used in this study. The effect of the specimen thickness is explicitly investigated for six thicknesses ranging from 1 to 32 mm. In addition, three crack inclination angles, including pure Mode-I, are used to study the effect of mixed-mode I-II fracture. An attempt is made to correlate the extent of a particular stress state along the crack front to thickness. In addition, ${\sigma}_{zz}/{\nu}({\sigma}_{xx}+{\sigma}_{yy})$ contours at the crack front are presented as a useful means to analyze the stress state.

  • The purpose of this paper is that investigates the dynamic behavior characteristic of W.T.S(Wind Turbine System) and carries out the evaluation analysis during operating W.T.S. To investigate the dynamic behavior characteristic of W.T.S. the experiments to measure vibration of the blade from the attached accelerometer on the flap and edge section of the blade that is one of the most important elements of dynamic characteristic of W.T.S are performed. Natural frequency and mode shape are calculated with commercial program (STAR MODAL) using the measured vibration acceleration that receives the signal with F.F.T Analyzer from the accelerometer. For validation of these experiments. the finite element analysis is performed with commercial F.E.M Program (ANSYS) on the basis of the natural frequency and mode shape. The results indicate that experimental values have good agreements with the finite element analysis.
