Among the digital halftoning, the error diffusion halftoning gives better subjective quality than other halftoning techniques. But it also makes edges of objects blurred. To overcome the defect, this paper proposes the modified error diffusion halftoning algorithm to enhance the edges using the spatial perceptual properties of the human visual system. Using the properties that the human eyes perceive not the pixel's luminance itself but the local average luminance and the information that human eyes perceive spatial variation, the proposed method computes information of edge enhancement(IEE). The IEE is added to the quantizer's input pixel and feeds into the halftoning quantizer. The quantizer produces the halftone image having the enhanced edge. Also this paper proposes the technique that the coefficients of the error diffusion filter are adapted according to the correlation among color components. The computer simulation results show that the proposed method produces finer halftoning images than conventional methods due to the enhanced edges. And the proposed method also preserves similar in edges to original image and reduces some defects such as color impulse and false contours.

In this paper, a new technique for image enhancement using weighted cross-shaped median filter with edge-detection algorithm is proposed. It consists of simple hypothesis test for edge-detection, and makes use of the cross-shaped moving window. This method is applied to noise corrupted image and its results are compared with those of median filters. As for the experimental result, method of weighted cross-shaped median filter is superior to other median filters.

In this paper, we describe the results of a study on the edge enhancement of X-ray images by using their fuzzy system representation. A set of gray scale X-ray images was generated using the EGS4 computer code. An aluminum plate or a lead plate with three parallel strips taken out has been used as the object with the thickness and the width of the plate, and the gap between the two strips varied. We started with a comparative study on a set of the fuzzy sets for their applicability as the input fuzzy sets for the fuzzy system representation of the gray scale images. Then we describe how the fuzzy system is used to sharpen the edges. Our algorithm is based on adding the magnitude of the gradient not to the pixel value of concern but rather to the nearest neighboring pixel in the direction of the gradient. We show that this algorithm is better in maintaining the spatial resolution of the original image after the edge enhancement.

While hyperspectral data are very rich in information, their processing poses several challenges such as computational requirements, noise removal and relevant information extraction. In this paper, the application of advanced scale-space filtering to selected hyperspectral bands was investigated. In particular, a pre-processing tool, consisting of anisotropic diffusion and morphological leveling filtering, has been developed, aiming to an edge-preserving smoothing and simplification of hyperspectral data, procedures which are of fundamental importance during feature extraction and object detection. Two scale space parameters define the extent of image smoothing (anisotropic diffusion iterations) and image simplification (scale of morphological levelings). Experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness of the developed scale space filtering for the enhancement and smoothing of hyperspectral remote sensing data and their advantage against watershed over-segmentation problems and edge detection.

In this paper, the novel approach for image contrast enhancement is introduced. The method is based on the unsharp mask and directional information of images. Since the unsharp mask techniques give better visual quality than the conventional sharpening mask, there are much works on image enhancement using unsharp masks. The proposed algorithm decomposes the image to several blocks and extracts directional information using DCT. From the geometric properties of the block, each block is labeled as appropriate type and processed by adaptive unsharp mask. The masking process is skipped at the flat area to reduce the noise artifact, but at the texture and edge area, the adaptive unsharp mask is applied to enhance the image contrast based on the edge direction. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm produces the contrast enhanced images with superior visual quality, suppressing the noise effects and enhancing edge at the same time.

In this paper, we propose an adaptive histogram projection technique for dynamic range compression and an efficient detail enhancement method which is enhancing strong edge while reducing noise. First, The high dynamic range image is divided into low-pass component and high-pass component by applying 'guided image filtering'. After applying 'guided filter' to high dynamic range image, second, the low-pass component of the image is compressed into 8-bit with the adaptive histogram projection technique which is using global standard deviation value of whole image. Third, the high-pass component of the image adaptively reduces noise and intensifies the strong edges using standard deviation value in local path of the guided filter. Lastly, the monitor display image is summed up with the compressed low-pass component and the edge-intensified high-pass component. At the end of this paper, the experimental result show that the suggested technique can be applied properly to the IR images of various scenes.

The error diffusion algorithm is good for reproducing continuous images to binary images. However the reproduction of edge characteristics is weak in power spectrum an analysis of display error. In this paper an edge enhanced error diffusion method is proposed to improve the edge characteristic enhancement. Spatial gradient information in original image is adapted for edge enhance in threshold modulation of error diffusion. First the horizontal and vertical second order differential values are obtained from the gradient of peripheral pixels(3x3) in original image. second weighting function is composed by function including absolute value and sign of second order differential values. The proposed method presents a good visual results which edge characteristics is enhanced. The performance of the proposed method is compared with that of the conventional edge enhanced error diffusion by measuring the edge correlation and the local average accordance over a range of viewing distances and the RAPSD of display error.
Digital halftoning is a process to produce a binary image so that the original image and its binary counterpart appear similar when observed from a distance. Among digital halftoning methods, error diffusion is a procedure for generating high quality bilevel images from continuous-tone images but blurs the edge information in the bilevel images. To solve this problem, we propose the improved error diffusion using local spatial information of the original images. Based on the fact that the human vision perceives not a pixel but local mean of input image, we compute edge enhancement information(EEI) by appling the ratio of a pixel and its adjacent pixels to local mean. The weights applied to local means is computed using the ratio of local activity measure(LAM) to the difference between input pixels of 3$\times$3 blocks and theirs mean. LAM is the measure of luminance changes in local regions and is obtained by adding the square of the difference between input pixels of 3$\times$3 blocks and theirs mean. We add the value to a input pixel of quantizer to enhance edge. The performance of the proposed method is compared with conventional methods by measuring the edge correlation. The halftone images by using the proposed method show better quality due to the enhanced edge. And the detailed edge is preserved in the halftone images by using the proposed method. Also the proposed method improves the quality of halftone images because unpleasant patterns for human visual system are reduced.

The modified Wiener filtering method is proposed for effective noise suppression in edge region of images corrupted by additive white gaussian noise. Although the pixels classified as a edge region in the conventional Wiener filter have lots of noise components, the conventional Wiener filler cannot remove noise effectively due to the preserving of edges. To reduce noise well in edge region, we modify filter coefficients of the conventional Wiener filter The modified filter coefficients increase in noise suppression effect In edge region, while they preserve edges for strong edge region. From simulation $(256{\time}256$ size, 256 graylevel images) filtered images by the proposed method show much improved subjective image quality with some improved peak signal-to-noise ratio compared to those by the conventional Wiener filtering.
