  • Interfacial stress singularity induced in an analysis model consisting of the polymeric thin film and the elastic substrate has been investigated using the boundary element method. The interfacial singular stresses between the viscoelastic thin film and the elastic substrate subjected to a uniform moisture ingression are investigated for the case of a small interfacial edge crack. It is assumed that moisture effects are assumed to be analogous to thermal effects. Then, the overall stress intensity factor for the case of a small interfacial edge crack is computed. The numerical procedure does not permit calculation of the limiting case for which the edge crack length vanishes.

  • A XML Instance repository model based on the Edge-Labeled Graph is suggested for storing the XML instance in Relational Databases, This repository model represents the XML instance as a data graph based on the Edge-Labeled Graph, extracts the defined value based on the structure of data path, element, attribute, and table index table presented as database schema, and stores these values using the Mapper module, In order to support querry, XML repository model offers the module translating XQL which is a query language under XPATH to SQL, and has DBtoXML generator module restoring the stored XML instance. As a result, it is possible to represent the storage relationship between the XML instances and the proposed repository model in terms of Graph-based Path, and it shows the possibility of easy search of specific element and attribute information.

  • A RDB Storage Model based on the Edge-Labeled Graph is suggested for store the XML instance in Relational Databases(RDB). The XML instance being stored is represented by Data Graph based on the Edge-Labeled Graph. Data Path Table, Element, Attribute, and Table Index Table values are extracted. Then Database Schema is defined, and the extracted values are stored using the Mapper. In order to support querry, Repository Model offers the translator translating XQL which is used as query language under XPATH, into SQL. In addition, it creates DBtoXML generator restoring the stored XML instance. As a result, storage relationship between the XML instance and proposed model structure can be expressed in terms of Graph-based Path, and it shows the possibility of easy search of random Element and Attribute information.

  • In this paper the fretting wear of press-fitted specimens subjected to a cyclic bending load was simulated using finite element analysis and numerical method. The amount of microslip and contact variable at press-fitted and bending load condition in a press-fitted shaft was analysed by applying finite element method. With the finite element analysis result, a numerical approach was applied to predict fretting wear based on modified Archard's equation and updating the change of contact pressure caused by local wear with influence function method. The predicted wear profiles of press-fitted specimens at the contact edge were compared with the experimental results obtained by rotating bending fatigue tests. It is shown that the depth of fretting wear by repeated slip between shaft and boss reaches the maximum value at the contact edge. The initial surface profile is continuously changed by the wear at the contact edge, and then the corresponding contact variables are redistributed. The work establishes a basis for numerical simulation of fretting wear on press fits.

  • In this study, the influence of centrally placed circular and square cutouts on vibration and buckling characteristics of different ply-oriented laminated panels under the action of compressive and/or tensile types of non-uniform in-plane edge loads are investigated. The panels are inspected under the action of uniaxial compression, uniaxial tension and biaxial, compression-tension, loading configurations. Furthermore, the effects of different degrees of edge restraints and panel aspect ratios are also addressed in this work. Towards this, a nine-node heterosis plate element has been adopted which includes the effect of shear deformation and rotary inertia. According to the results, the tensile buckling loads are higher than that of compressive buckling loads. However, the tensile buckling load continuously reduces with the increased cutout sizes irrespective of ply-orientations. This is also true for compressive buckling loads except for some particular ply-orientations with higher sized cutouts.

  • In the present paper, a novel systematic method using the 2-D hybrid special finite elements containing an edge crack is employed to study the fracture behaviors of laser beam spot-welds in automotive structures. 2-D hybrid special finite elements each containing an edge crack can assure the high precision especially in the vicinity of crack tips and give a better description of its singularity with only one hybrid element surrounding one crack. Therefore, the numerical modeling of the laser beam spot-welds can be greatly simplified. Some numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the validity and versatility of the proposed method. All the lap-shear, lap-tension and angle clip specimens are analyzed and some useful fracture parameters (such as stress intensity factors, the initial direction of crack growth) are obtained simultaneously.

  • This study investigated the behaviors of the gabled hyperbolic paraboloid shell structure subjected to differential settlement and the horizontal displacement due to the elongation of tie rod/beam on supports. Two types of shell structure with different roof slopes are used in study; conventional type which has perimeter beams around the shell panel, and simple type which removes the edge beams along the slab edge line. The effect of the removal of edge beam under vertical or horizontal displacement on supports, and the roof slope was compared using the finite element analysis.

  • The available analytical methods of analysis for laterally loaded piles in level ground cannot be directly applied to such piles in sloping ground. With the commercially available software, the simulation of the appropriate field condition is a challenging task, and the results are subjective. Therefore, it becomes essential to understand the process of development of a user-framed numerical formulation, which may be used easily as per the specific site conditions without depending on other indirect methods of analysis as well as on the software. In the present study, a detailed three-dimensional finite element formulation is presented for the analysis of laterally loaded piles in sloping ground developing the 18 node triangular prism elements. An application of the numerical formulation has been illustrated for the pile located at the crest of the slope and for the pile located at some edge distance from the crest. The specific examples show that at any given depth, the displacement and bending moment increase with an increase in slope of the ground, whereas they decrease with increasing edge distance.

  • A numerical method for the analysis of 3D eddy current in conductors due to applied time varying field is suggested using the finite element method. In the approximation of the field quantifies, the edge element is used, because it reduce the required computer memory and the computing time compared with the nodal elements. With edge elements, furthermore, the field governing equations become simple because the electric scalar potential ${\phi}$ can be set to zero. The modified magnetic vector potential($A^*$) is used as a state variable. The analysed results are compared with the experimentally measured ones for the TEAM workshop problem3.

  • Precision control of the width of slabs is vital for product quality and production economy in steel rolling mills. However, the formation of so called 'dog-bone' at the edge of the slab would affect the final width during the horizontal rolling that follows. Therefore, it is essential to predict and control the dog-bone shape. In this paper, a model is derived by using a number of finite element simulations for edge rolling and a least square regression analysis. The prediction accuracy of the proposed model is examined by comparing the predictions from finite element simulation with experiment results in the literature.
