Several derivatives were synthesized from fructigenine A, which was isolated from Penicillium fructigenum. The anti-inflammatory properties of fructigenine A was evaluated in vivo with a 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced mouse ear edema model and a carrageenan-induced rat paw edema model. Results showed that the anti-inflammatory activity was significantly higher with fructigenine derivatives than with indomethacin, which was used as a standard. We concluded that fructigenine derivatives could exert an anti-inflammatory effect.
Present study was aimed to examine whether indomethacin affected the production of NO in the rat paw exudate by carrageenin. Paw edema and nitrite/nitrate levels in the paw exudate were maximal after 4 h and remained elevated up to 10 h, whereas indomethacin (10 mg/kg, po) significantly inhibited the carrageenin-induced paw edema and levels of nitrate in the paw exudate. However, paw edema and nitrite/nitrite levels were increased thereafter for 10 h. Indomethacin also enhanced the expression of iNOS mRNA and protein 4 h after carrageenin infection. Indomethacin inhibited the level of $PGE_2$ in the paw exudate in a time-dependent manner. These results suggest the possibility that indomethacin may potentiate expression of iNOS and subsequently increase nitrite/nitrate level in the late phase of carrageenin-induced rat paw inflammation possibly by suppressing cycloxygenase activity.

Angioneurotic edema is rarely seen in dental practice and manifested by acute attacks of swelling of the extremities, face, airway, or abdominal visera, occuring spontaneously and suddenly or secondary to trauma. Two types are recognized : hereditary and nonhereditary. Prophylatic therapy may be used by fresh frozen plasma or antifibrinolytic agents in hereditary type. Good supportive care for acute attacks, together with a knowledge of course of the disease, can prevent asphyxiation from airway obstruction. A case of acute angioneurotic edema of the facial area in a 19-year-old man is presented in conjunction with a review of the literature. Angioneurotic edema attacks him acutely after the extraction of the lower, right 3rd molar.
Reexpansion pulmonary edema[ RPE ] with hypoxemia and hypotension is a very rare complication of the treatment of lung collapse secondary to pneumothorax and pleural effusion. We experienced two cases of RPE. One is a 29 year old male with complete right pneumothorax and the other is a 20 year old female with massive right pleural effusion. Life threatening pulmonary edema was developed soon after insertion of chest tube in both. Fortunately, RPE was detected early and intensive treatment was performed. They were discharged without complication. Although RPE with hypoxemia and hypotension is rare , it is very serious and occasionally life-threatening. So, chest surgeon treating lung collapse must be aware of the possibility of RPE and make an effort to prevent the occurence of this condition.
The effects of nifedipne and verapamil were compared on carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats and the results are summarized as follows: Carrageenan induced severe acute paw edema within 30 minutes and the maximum effect was achieved around 4 hours after administration. The carrageenan-induced paw edema was prominantly reduced by pretreatments of indomethacin (2mg/kg, p.o.) and nifedipine (10 and 20mg/kg, i.p.), whereas verapamil had no effect on the carrageenan-induced paw edema. These results suggest that calcium antagonists, nifedipine and verapamil, have a different effect on the inflammatory response induced by carrageenan.
Objects : This study was performed in order to observe the effects of water extract of Dendrobii herba on intracerebral hemorrhage(ICH), Method : ICH was induced by the stereotaxic intrastriatal injection of bacterial collagenase type IV in Sprague-Dawley rats. After the water extracts of Dendrobii herba were administrated orally once a day for 3 days, hematoma volume, percentage of brain edema, expression of iNOS and MPO were observed using immunohistochemistry. Results : Rats fed with water extracts of Dendrobii herba showed reduction of hematoma volume and percentage of brain edema compared with controls. In addition, Infiltration of myeloperoxidase (MPO) expressing neutrophil and expression of inducible nitric oxide synthatase(iNOS) were significantly reduced in rats fed with water extracts of Dendrobii herba. Conclusion : These results demonstrated that water extracts of Dendrobii herba reduced brain damage of intracerebral hemorrhage(ICH) and subsequent ICH-induced cerebral edema, and inhibited neutrophil infiltration.
Corylopsis gotoana (Hamamelidaceae) has been used as a traditional medicine for the treatment various diseases including cold, edema and vomiting. However, previous studies regarding component analysis and pharmacological actions of C. gotoana are extremely limited until now. In this study, we investigated anti-inflammatory activities of the methanolic extract of the twigs of Corylopsis gotoana (MCG) both in vitro and in vivo. MCG effectively inhibited excessive NO production in IFN-${\gamma}$ and LPS-stimulated mouse peritoneal macrophages without notable cytotoxicity. In addition, we also found that MCG could attenuate the expression of inflammatory mediators such as inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). We further tested in vivo anti-inflammatory activity of MCG using paw edema mouse model. Herein, MCG demonstrated significant suppression on the paw edema induced by both of trypsin and carrageenan. These results indicated that MCG has potent anti-inflammatory potential and may be useful for prevention and treatments of inflammatory diseases.
Presented here is a 36-year-old male with arterial hypertension who developed brainstem edema and intracranial hemorrhage. Magnetic resonance scan revealed diffuse brainstem hyperintensity in T2-weighted and fluid-attenuated inversion-recovery images, with an increase in apparent diffusion coefficient values. After a reduction in blood pressure, rapid resolution of the brainstem edema was observed on follow-up. The patient's condition was thus interpreted as hypertensive brainstem encephalopathy. While many consider this a vasogenic phenomenon, induced by sudden, severe hypertension, the precise mechanism remains unclear. Prompt recognition and aggressive antihypertensive treatment in such patients are essential to prevent permanent or life-threatening neurologic injury.

Edema factor(EF) is a portion of anthrax toxin which produces edema when combined with protective antigen. This paper describes about technique for cloning, expression, purification and activity test of EF. Using the E. coli expression system, we could make recombinant EF protein although it's origin is Bacillus anthracis. And also we could culture massively and purify highly pure protein. Finally we confirm a enzyme activity of purified EF to increase intracellular cAMP level. Through establishing this technique, it can be possible to research about EF in depth and apply to expression and purification of many other protein in biology.

The root of Astragalus membranaceous (AM) has been used to treat edema and arthritis in the traditional Korean medicine. To elucidate the anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive effects of ethanol extract of AM, the carrageenan-induced paw edema using a plethysmometer and thermal hypersensitivity using the plantar test were measured. Ibuprofen was used as a control drug. Pretreatment with AM (400 mg/kg p.o.) significantly reduced paw edema, compared to the carrageenan-treated rats. In the plantar test, the thermal withdrawal latency in AM-treated group was significantly increased than the carrageenan-treated group. The results indicate that AM could have be the anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive properties.
