  • In this inverstigation, the various flavonoid aglycones were evaluated for their inhibitory activities against croton-oil or arachidonic acid induced mouse ear edema by oral or topical administration. The compounds tested were thirteen derivatives of flavan-3-ol(catechin and epicatechin), flavanone (flavanone and naringenin), flavone (flavone, chrysin and apigenin), flavonol(favonol, galangin, quercetin and morin) and isoflavone (biochanin A and 2-carbethoxy-5,7-dihydroxy-4'-methoxyisoflavone), along with hydrocortisone, indomethacin, 4-bormophenacyl bromide, nordihydroguaiaretic acid and phenidone as positive controls. A(isoflavone) were found to show broad inhibitoty activities (14-52%) against croton-oil or arachidonic acid induced ear edema by oral or topical application at the dose of 2 mg/mouse, although they showed less activity than hydrocortisone (26-88%) or indomethacin (36-80%). Flavonoid agtlycones tested showed higher activity when aplied topically than by the oral administration. It was also found that they inhibited arachidonic acid induced edema more profoundly than croton-oil induced edema by topical application. In arachidonic acid induced edema when applied topically, flavone derivatives such as flavone, chrysin and apigenin were revealed to be the good inhibitory agents in addition to flavonols and isoflavones. When quercetin and biochanin. A were selected for evaluating in carrageenan induced rat pleurisy and biochanin both flavonoids showed antiinflammatory activity at the dose of 70 mg/kg by the oral adminis-tration. All of these results revealed that flavonoid aglycones, especially 5,7-dihydroxy-flavonols having hydroxyl group(s) in B-ring and biochanin A (isoflavone) possessed in vivo antiinflammatory activity.

  • Objectives : This study was designed to evaluate the effect of moving cupping therapy on the edema of paretic hand in stroke patients. Methods : The subjects were stroke patients with flaccid hemiplegia. Each subject's routine therapy program was maintained throughout single subject ABAB design. During the first week, baseline data were gathered. During the second and fourth week, intervention was provided(total 20minutes of moving cupping therapy, from contralateral to ipsilateral, distal to proximal). During third and fifth week, data were gathered with treatment withdrawn. Edema was measured with hand volumeter and measuring tape. Basically Bayesian analysis was performed using WinBUGS(ver. 1.4), for addition, visual graph and mean score were also presented for comparison between treatment(moving cupping therapy) and non-treatment. Results : The visual graph and mean score showed decrease in edema during the treatment weeks. Overall decrease in edema by moving cupping therapy was verified significantly by using Bayesian ana-lysis(95% credibility intervals). Conclusions : This study suggests that moving cupping therapy could be applicable for reducing post-stroke hand edema. Further research would be needed to establish guidelines for use.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of partial pyloric obstruction on body weight, gastric juice, gastric surface area and gastric edema in normal intact and/or vagotomized rats. Methods : Partial pyloric obstruction was performed by wrapping a non-absorbable rubber ring (D:6 mm, W:4 mm, T:1 mm) around the 1st portion of the duodenum. Vagotomy was performed by resecting the branches around the esophagogastric junction. Pre-post body weight differential, fasting gastric juice volume, gastric surface area and gastric edema were measured at 8 weeks and 20 weeks. For the effect of pyloric reperfusion the rubber ring was removed after 8 weeks and then an additional 12 weeks of observation was performed to the end of the 20-week experimental period. Results : In the initial 8 weeks observation, the effect of pylorus obstruction and/or vagotomy was significantly remarkable in the pylorus obstructed and vagotomized group; slowdown of weight gain, increase of fasting gastric juice volume, dilatation of gastric surface area and severe gastric edema were shown. In the remaining 12 weeks observation, the effect of reperfusion was significantly remarkable in the ring-removed antral dilated group; recovery of weight gain, decrease of gastric surface area and decrease of gastric edema were shown. However, gastric juice volume was not significantly different from the other group. Conclusions : Partial pyloric obstruction plays a aggravating role and the vagus nerve plays a protective role in body weight, gastric juice, gastric surface area, and gastric edema. Furthermore, pyloric valve dysfunction as an aggravating factor strengthened in defect of the vagus nerve. These results suggest that patients with both functional pyloric outlet obstruction and hypofunction of vagus nerve need to be diagnosed in good time and treated properly.

  • The aim of this thesis is to examine the effect of the diuretics in the Sasang constitutional medicine those are not categorized to the diuretic in the established herbal medicine by the way of measuring the change of body edema and the quantity of body moisture through the inbody test, along with the urine volume taken for 24 hours 1. We medicated the diuretic suggested by the DongyiSuseBowon東醫壽世保元 into the tested group and measured the change of the urine volume, the quantity of body moisture and the degree of body edema. The results are the followings below. 1) Soeumin The change in the urine volume and body moisture showed no responsibility, but the degree of body edema decreased with the responsibility. 2) Soyangin All of the degree of body edema and the urine volume, and body moisture showed decrease. 3) Taeumin The urine volume and body moisture increased but showed no responsibility. Also the degree of body edema decreased within the normal limit which can not be accepted. 4) The medicine of the Sasang Constitutional Medicine can not be simply thought to be the diuretic, but it has the function that excretes the moisture which functions negatively in the body and causes edema, as well as the function of the adjustment of metabolism that preserves the normal amount of moisture. This is the good example which is the concept of the adjustment therapy suggested by The Sasang Constitutional Medicine 2. Through the results above, we can find that the diuretic suggested by The Sasang Constitutional Medicine functions in the way that is differently explained by the herbal medicine.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the effect of foot-bath on lower extremities edema and fatigue among college students in Korea. Methods: This study used an quasi-experimental design with 56 participants (30 for experiments and 26 for controls). The experimental group performed 20-minute foot bath before sleep three times for one week. All subjects were directed to use their smart-phones to fill out a questionnaire about fatigue. Leg circumference was measured 10 minutes after foot bath. The test was performed from April 30th to May 22th in 2016. Data was analyzed using t-test and $x^2$ test. Results: We found no difference in general characteristics between the experimental group and the control group. Left leg edema of the experimental group decreased by $16.63{\pm}14.57mm$ (p<.001). The experimental group's right leg-edema decreased by $13.10{\pm}13.97mm$ (p<.001). There was no statistically significant difference in their fatigue level when comparing before and after the foot baths. Conclusion: We found that doing foot baths for two weeks could have positive effects in reducing leg-edema among college students. Foot bath may be applied as an effective nursing intervention to decrease leg edema among young people. The results are based on a limited number of study samples and a short-term intervention. Further research can be performed with extended population and a prolonged study period.

  • Objectives : This study aimed at evaluation of the effects of Rhodiola rosea on brain edema and expressions of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) related to blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption. Methods : Brain edema following intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) was induced by the stereotaxic intrastriatal injection of bacterial collagenase type VII in rats (Sprague-Dawley). Then ethanol extract of Rhodiola rosea was treated once a day for 3 days. Brain edema % and water contents, and BBB leakage were examined. Immunohistochemistry was processed for MMP-9, MMP-12, and iNOS expressions in the brain sections and each immuno-labeled cells were analyzed with image analysis software. Results : 1. Ethanol extract of Rhodiola rosea reduced brain edema following ICH in rats significantly. 2. Ethanol extract of Rhodiola rosea reduced excessive brain tissue water contents following ICH in rats significantly. 3. Ethanol extract of Rhodiola rosea reduced BBB leakage in the cerebral cortex following ICH in rats. 4. Ethanol extract of Rhodiola rosea reduced cellular edema of neurons in peri-hematoma and the cerebral cortex following ICH in rats significantly. 5. Ethanol extract of Rhodiola rosea reduced MMP-9 positive cells in the cerebral cortex following ICH in rats significantly. 6. Ethanol extract of Rhodiola rosea reduced MMP-12 positive vessels in the cerebral cortex following ICH in rats significantly. 7. Ethanol extract of Rhodiola rosea reduced iNOS positive cells in the cerebral cortex and external capsule following ICH in rats significantly. Conclusions : These results suggest that Rhodiola rosea reveals protective effect against brain edema and cytotoxic edema of neurons by means of down-regulation of MMPs and iNOS expressions, and inhibition of BBB leakage.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to report the improvement in a patient with edema treated by herb medication based on Shanghanlun provisions. Methods : According to 'A disease pattern identification diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions (DPIDS)', a patient was diagnosed with Taeyang-byung, no. 46 provision and was administered with Mahwang-tang herbal medication for 30 days. The Numeric rating scale (NRS) was used to estimate the response. Results : The NRS score changed from 10 to 1 and the edema disappeared by 46th provision of Mahwang-tang selected according to Shanghanlun provisions. Conclusions : This case report suggests that the two words in the 46th provision of Shanghanlun, '陽氣重, 無汗' (Yang qi heavy, Absence of sweating) indicate a close relationship between photosensitivity and absence of sweating, thereby affecting edema in this case.

  • Objective : The aim of this study is to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of 15Hz electroacupuncture(EA) on carrageenan-injected rats. Inflammation was induced by an intraplantar injection of 1% carrageenan into the right hind paw. Methods : Bilateral EA stimulation with 15 Hz were delivered at those acupoints corresponding to Zusanli and Sanyinjiao in man via the needles for a total of 30 min duration in carrageenan-injected rats. Results: The developing edema was measured 30 minutes interval afer carrageenan injection and 15 Hz EA stimulation presented significant edema inhibition. Three hours after carrageenan injection, prostaglandin $E_2(PGE_2)$ and nitric oxide(NO) levels were measured. The 15Hz EA stimulation significantly inhibited $PGE_2$ and NO production in the right paw. The pro-inflammatory mRNA expression such as cyclooxygenases(COX)-2 and interleukin(IL)-$1{\beta}$ were slightly down-regulated by EA stimulation. The number of COX-2, IL-$1{\beta}$, tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ immunoreactive cells were abundantly observed in paw edema. But these cells were decreased in nmber according to anti-edema effect of 15Hz EA. Conclusions: These results indicate that 15Hz EA stimulation have an alleviation action against carrageenan-induced edema and local inflammation.
