  • On the contrary to the expansion of feasibility studies on public construction and development projects, there is few feasibility studies on S&T, especially large-scale basic research facilities. Based on this critical mind, we tried the first feasibility study on large-scale basic research facilities, that is, the 4th Generation Light Source. First, it is validated whether the construction of 4th Generation Light Source is economically feasible and second, if economically feasible, the optimal place and time for construction are analyzed by using Analytical Hierarchy Process. This research shows that the construction is economically feasible irregardless of scenarios on future bio-medicine industry growth and to construct at Pohang in 2006 is optimal strategy. On the basis of this analysis, the feasibility studies on large-scale basic research facilities are expected to be more expanded and developed.

  • The Korean government announced the "1st Basic Plan for the Transition to Hydrogen Economy" in 2021 and declared the establishment of a hydrogen industry ecosystem by 2040. To build a low-carbon power system, resources that can efficiently accommodate renewable energy are required, and green hydrogen is considered a potential solution. This study analyzed the economic feasibility of green hydrogen-based sector coupling to reduce curtailment of renewable generation in the Jeju power system by 2025 under the scenario of with or without HVDC#3. The result showed that HVDC#3 significantly reduced the frequency of curtailment from 16.1% to 3.0%. In addition, green hydrogen-based sector coupling was an economically feasible option as result showed an IRR of 4.86% when HVDC#3 was connected and 11.45% when it was not under the condition of achieving 50% curtailment reduction. This study shows that the higher the level of renewable energy deployment, the more delayed the HVDC connection between Jeju and the main land, and the lower the SMP, the more economically feasible the green hydrogen-based sector coupling is. Furthermore, this study suggests that the policy goal of completely reducing curtailment is not economically efficient.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of new hollow reinforced concrete (RC) bridge pier sections with triangular reinforcement details. The proposed triangular reinforcement details are economically feasible and rational and facilitate shorter construction periods. A model of pier sections with triangular reinforcement details was tested under quasi-static monotonic loading. As a result, proposed triangular reinforcement details was equal to existing reinforcement details in terms of required performance. In the companion paper, the parametric study for the performance assessment of new hollow RC bridge pier sections with triangular reinforcement details is performed.

  • This study investigates the seismic performance of solid reinforced concrete columns with triangular reinforcement details using nonlinear seismic analysis. The developed reinforcement details are economically feasible and rational, and facilitate shorter construction periods. By using a sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program, the accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process can be enhanced. Solution of the equations of motion is obtained by numerical integration using Hilber-Hughes-Taylor (HHT) algorithm. The proposed numerical method gives a realistic prediction of seismic performance throughout the input ground motions for several column specimens. As a result, developed triangular reinforcement details were designed to be superior to the existing reinforcement details in terms of required performance.

  • This study investigated the environmental and economical assessment for sewage sludge treatment options including biogasification, incineration, carbonization, drying, and solidification. Additionally it is also investigated the economical feasibility of the current guidelines (Digestion efficiency for organic waste = 45 %, Moisture content of sludge = 95 and 93 %) and it aimed to suggest the scientific informations for a policy-making. For the economical feasibility the 30 plants with anaerobic digestion treatment and the 17 plants without anaerobic digestion treatment were investigated. The result of the comparison of sewage sludge treatment options showed that anaerobic digestion+incineration was the most economically feasible considering incineration and drying. For smaller treatment capacity, solidification was the most economically feasible considering carbonization and solidification and anaerobic digestion+carbonization was the most economically feasible considering carbonization and solidification.

  • This study investigates the performance of hollow precast segmental bridge columns with reinforcement details for material quantity reduction. The proposed triangular reinforcement details are economically feasible and rational, and facilitate shorter construction periods. The precast segmental bridge columns provides an alternative to current cast-in-place systems. We tested a model of hollow precast segmental bridge columns under a constant axial load and a quasi-static, cyclically reversed horizontal load. We used a computer program, Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology (RCAHEST), for analysis of reinforced concrete structures. The used numerical method gives a realistic prediction of performance throughout the loading cycles for hollow precast segmental bridge column specimens investigated. As a result, proposed reinforcement details for material quantity reduction was equal to existing reinforcement details in terms of required performance.

  • This study conducted an analysis of economic feasibility with unit generating costs calculated based on scenarios of capacity factors, discount rates, government supporting rates, installation costs. However, It Is clear that few new and renewable energies can meet the tariffs [government purchasing prices] set by the government in light of the current market reality. Without the government support, solar PV is not economically feasible at the tariff of \716.40/kWh. in the case of wind Power, the current tariff of \107.66/kWh is not enough to make it competitive except for a mid- and large-scale wind farm The analysis showed that even small hydro is not economically acceptable at the current tariff of \73.69/kWh.

  • This study investigated the environmental and economical assessment for sewage sludge treatment options including biogasification, incineration, carbonization, drying, and solidification. Considering B/C ratio for an anaerobic digestion treatment, for $270,000m^3/d$ (over $1,150m^3/day$), B/C was 1, as the moisture content increased to 95 %, B/C was 1 for $100000m^3/d$ (capacity of $400m^3/day$). Anaerobic digestion+solidification was the most economically feasible, then Anaerobic digestion+incineration and anaerobic digestion+drying were the next economically feasible and then anaerobic digestion+carbonization was the least economically feasible. If anaerobic digestion efficiency was improved to 45%, the treatment costs for anaerobic digestion+carbonization, anaerobic digestion+incineration and anaerobic digestion+drying were decreased to 3,000~5,000 won/t and the costs for anaerobic digestion+solidification was decreased to 2,000~3,000 won/t due to increasing of the beneficial cost of the biogas production.

  • This study investigated the environmental and economical assessment for sewage sludge treatment options including biogasification, incineration, carbonization, drying, and solidification. For the economical feasibility the 30 plants with anaerobic digestion treatment and the 17 plants without anaerobic digestion treatment were investigated. In regarding to the environmental assessment, the air emission pollutants (SOx, NOx, etc) from incineration and carbonization plants were assessed and 1~34 % of emission limits was emitted. Drying and solidification plants emitted about 30 % of odour limits. And the rest of the pollutants were emitted either at not-detectable level or at below the limits. When the by-products from the solidification treatment was used as landfill cover materials, the unconfined compression strength could be below the limit and it could cause an unsafe condition for those passing vehicles and the possibility of the ground subsidence. There has been a maintenance difficulty due to frequent blockage and operational failure.
