  • The stability of innovative prestressed wale system applied in urban excavation was investigated. The IPS is a wale system prestressed by tension of steel wires. The IPS consists of steel wires, H-beam support and wale. The IPS provides a high flexural stiffness to resist the bending moment caused by earth pressures. And the IPS transmits earth pressures due to excavation to corner struts. The IPS provides a larger spacing of support, economical benefit, construction easiness, good performance and safety control. This paper explains basic concept and mechanism of the IPS and presents the measured performances of the IPS applied in urban excavation. In order to investigate applicability and stability of the IPS in urban excavation, observations and measurements in site were performed. The IPS applied in urban excavation was performed successfully. The results of the field instrumentation were presented. The measured performances of the IPS were investigated. And behavior of the wall and corner struts was investigated.

  • The use of toxic chemicals was extended as the industry in Korea has grown dramatically during the last three decades. However, list of toxic substances and limit concentrations in the water environment are not consistent within management of ambient water, drinking water and industrial effluent. This article suggests the systematic framework to classify toxic substances in the water environment and deriving their effluent limits. The most important factor for decision-making to classify toxic substances is whether their concentrations in the water environment are higher than the reference concentrations, estimated by considering human health risk and ecological risk. Using a risk-based reference concentration, the ambient water quality criterion, it is possible to derive the regulatory limit concentrations of toxic substances in drinking water and in industrial effluent. The goal concentrations in the effluent, which guarantee the human and ecological safety, should be determined with scientific investigation, balancing environmental benefit and economical effect, considering availability of treatment technology and identifying characteristics of wastewater from different industries.

  • It is true that SOC facilities, such as dams, need long life cycles since more time has to be invested for the phases of planning, examination, feasibility study, design, contract, construction, and maintenance. This longer life cycle is easily exposed to the risk. And thus, brings additional cost by the delayed project, convenient loss according to the additional run of use, and benefit lose of not to using the facilities. So, the purpose of this study is to try to find a solution to reduce these time consuming problems which could diminish the whole national competition. Hence, this study is to show efficient, systematical project performance and network model by using reciprocal analyses between the construction period and cost based on economical analysis of each phase of life cycles. In addition, on the basis of these outputs, the Fast Track Method is suggested as an alternative solution as a new Approach in Life Cycle's Analysis.

  • Fast-tracking was developed as an optimizing method to shorten the duration of construction project in 1960's, and it introduced to Korea in 1999. Since then, many Korean companies have been used fast-tracking for getting economical benefit from shorten duration. However, there were some problems(dispute, delay and cost overrun) because of using inappropriate subcontractor management system. For this reason, previous studies suggested some management models to solve these problems. Unfortunately, however, the models have been had some doubts about reliability, objectivity and possibility of using them on real construction site. Therefore, this study suggests 3 steps of strategic subcontracting method and apply it on real fast-tracking practice(L company) to secure reliability and objectivity. Through this, the method is expected to make up the doubts of previous studies.

  • Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of heating of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccine before injection, on the incidence of lesions at the injection site (pork butt), amount of discarded meat, and economical benefit. Methods: In total, 101,086 piglets raised in 30 farms, were vaccinated in the neck with 2 mL of FMD vaccine at 56 d and 84 d of age using a commercial syringe. The heat treatment group (48,511 pigs) was injected with the FMD vaccine after it had been heated in a water bath at 40℃ for 20 min. After slaughter, the incidence of lesions on the pork butt was inspected, and the subsequent amount of discarded meat was recorded. Results: Heat treatment of FMD vaccine reduced the incident rate of lesions on the pork butt (p<0.01). Overall, 17.81% of the pigs in the heat treatment group had lesions, while the incident rate in the control group was 21.70%. The amount of discarded meat per head of total pigs and per head of pigs with lesions were significantly lower in the heat treatment group than the control group (p<0.01). Thus, the proportion of discarded meat to dressed carcass was lower in the heat treatment group (0.249%) compared with the control group (0.338%) (p<0.01). Farms that rear 1,000 sows can gain 1,863,289 KRW (1,600 USD) in one year when they adopt heat treatment of FMD vaccine before injection. Conclusion: Heat treatment of FMD vaccine using simple heat equipment (water bath) can be effective in reducing lesions caused by FMD vaccination and increase the economic benefits in pig farms.
