Making and Using an Ecological Learning-Place in Primary Schools in Daegu (대구 지역 초등학교의 생태학습장 조성과 활용)

  • Because of the rapid industrialization and urbanization, urban dwellers are lack of opportunity to contact with nature, and hence alienated from it. In particular, primary school children who are very sensible to nature need more opportunities to learn nature by direct interactions with it. For this purpose, a movement for making and using ecological learning-place in play-ground within primary school. It has been found as a result of research on ecological learning-places in 7 primary schools in Daegu that such places, equipped with several ecological facilities, provide both pupils and local dwellers around schools with a place for ecological learning and for rest. But some of them have been left without care and hence can not be properly used, because of inappropriate site, insufficient facilities, and deficient programme for practical use. In conclusion, the paper reconfirms importance of ecological learning-place within grounds of primary school in terms of its educational, social and ecological effects, and suggests briefly some measures to encourage its construction and practical use.

Toward a Systemic Approach to Quality Assurance in e-Learning: An Ecological Perspective

  • Challenges brought by applications of advanced technologies in education call for new approaches that can best ensure the provision of quality e-learning experiences. This paper presents an ecological approach as one of such approaches to quality assurance in e-learning that can monitor, assess and improve the effectiveness and the links between the various elements of e-learning. The ecological model for QA in e-learning emphasizes interrelation transactions between elements (e.g. providers, learners, cultures and policies) and systemic integration of those elements, and stresses that all these elements within a QA system play an equal role in maintaining balance of the whole. The model focuses attention both on individual and societal/cultural environmental factors as cornerstones for QA efforts in e-learning. It addresses the importance of QA efforts directed at changing QA transactions from provider-centered to 'all stakeholder-oriented', from one-size-fits-all model to 'globally oriented, locally adaptive model' and from control framework to 'culture creation framework'.

  • The concept of environmental education contains from teaching environmental pollutions and the importance of environment to the ecological relationship between human and the nature. The ultimate goal of environmental eduaction, however, is to build the environmental-friendly and responsible behavoir. One of the best way to achieve this goal is ecological learning centers, where students can observe and analyse threes, plants and animals, and they learn the principle of the environmental succession with feeling and understanding. Students internalize environmental awareness through experiencing the nature. In this paper, we would like to introduce the diverse types of ecological learning centers in germany and their programs focusing on the ecocenters in berlin, with an intention of adopting practical programs in korean school system.

A Study on User Satisfaction by Perceived Performance of Ecological Learning Center (생태학습장 이용객의 지각된 성과에 의한 만족도 연구)

  • An ecological learning center is defined as a place which can establish the correct relationship between human and environment. Human can learn ecosystem and importance of environment throughout observation of nature and participation in program of ecological learning center. The most important aspects of ecological learning center planning are to reflect on user's demand and preservation of ecosystem. The prime goals of this study is to analyze user's characteristics in the Young Wheol Mulmurigol Ecological Learning Center. The second goal of this study is to find out the satisfaction model based on user's perceived performance of each program and facility in the center. For this study, questionnaire survey with 204 individuals was completed. The data from the questionnaire were analyzed statistical method by SPSS. There are several significant results from the study as following First, this ecological learning center as a newly operating facility is used not for educational purpose but for resting and relaxation purpose. It is due to that the most of users in this center are package tourists with historic scenes. Second, user's perceived performance evaluated by 23 attributions of programs and facilities, and these attributions could be classified by 5 factors such as environment friendly design, educational function, preservation of environment, provision of various bio-top and provision of resting area. Third, the user satisfaction model indicates that user satisfaction is depended on various factors such as preservation of environment, provision of various bio-top, provision of resting area. Among these factor affecting the satisfaction, provision of various bio-top is the most influence on user satisfaction.

Study on Operation Method of Wcological Learning Facility for Wetland (대구광역시 달성습지 생태학습관 운영방안 연구)

  • This study aims to establish operating methods for value-oriented and competitive operation of Dalseong Wetland Ecological Learning Center in Daegu, Korea, which will open in 2018. For this purpose, we surveyed 77 Ecological learning facility managers nationwide using 22 questions on the subjects such as the operating method, volunteer, budget, and profit. The managers of 50 ecological learning facilities (Type A) responded, and we extracted the responses by the managers of 12 ecological learning facilities (Type B) that had the similar size as the Dalseong Wetland Ecological Learning Center and conducted an additional analysis. The results of the survey indicated that it was advisable for Daegu Metropolitan City to operate the Dalseong Wetland Ecological Learning Center and that the staff at least 3-5 managers were necessary while the number of volunteers to regularly work at the center was estimated to be 25-30. Excluding labor costs, the annual operating budget was estimated to be between 150 million won and 200 million won if Daegu Metropolitan City operates the facility directly. This study is meaningful in that it provides reference data to establish realistic and detailed management plan of the Dalseong Wetland Ecological Learning Center based on the opinions of the surveyed managers of ecological learning facilities in Korea.

Effects of the Nature Game Experience Learning on Schoolchild's Environmental Sensitivity Change in Jeju Gotjawal Forest (제주 곶자왈 숲 자연 놀이 체험 학습이 초등학생의 환경 감수성 변화에 미치는 영향)

  • The aims of this study are to develop and apply a Nature Game program for the ecological experience learning in Jeju Gotjawal forest and analyze the environmental sensitivity change of the students. The results obtained in 4th graders of A elementary school of Seogwipo-city are as follows: It was found that attention, susceptibility and practice will of environment protection for forest environment of the experimental class were significantly higher than those of the comparison class. And it was found that interest and curiosity into forest environment were also elevated in the results of the qualitative evaluation, suggesting that we could get the effect of developed Nature Game program on ecological experience learning. If various ecological experience learning programs considering the regional-specific characteristics are developed to cause students' interest and curiosity, students would come to participate in the protection activity of environment aggressively a little more.

  • This paper considers the advantage of Machine Learning (ML) implemented to freshwater ecosystem research. Currently, many studies have been carried out to find the patterns of environmental impact on dynamics of communities in aquatic ecosystems. Ecological models popularly adapted by many researchers have been a means of information processing in dealing with dynamics in various ecosystems. The up-to-date trend in ecological modelling partially turns to the application of ML to explain specific ecological events in complex ecosystems and to overcome the necessity of complicated data manipulation. This paper briefly introduces ML techniques applied to freshwater ecosystems in Korea. The manuscript provides promising information for the ecologists who utilize ML for elucidating complex ecological patterns and undertaking modelling of spatial and temporal dynamics of communities.

Effects of the Wetland Field Trip on the Pro-Environmental Attitudes of Elementary School Students (습지 생태 체험 학습이 초등학생의 환경 친화적 태도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of the present study is to develop ecological experience learning program for the wetland so that elementary school students can recognize the significance and values of wetland and have the attitudes to protect it through their ecological experience learning, and investigate changes in elementary school students' perception for wetland. The experimental class was composed of 26 elementary school students and took the ecological experience learning. The comparison class was also composed of 26 students who took theoretical learning for wetland. It was found that knowledge and attitudes for wetland of the experimental class were significantly high not only in the knowledge area but also in the affective area than those of the comparison class. And it was found that interest and curiosity into wetland were elevated also in the results of the qualitative evaluation, suggesting that we could get the effect of ecological experience learning. Therefore, it is thought that above all, more experience learning programs for wetland are needed to develop for elementary school students' right view of nature and minds to love it by continuously finding and providing materials of experience learning like those of this research in the future.

The Creation of Outdoor Environmental Education Space at an Elementary School (초등학교 옥외 환경학습공간 조성)

  • As recognition and polices for plans to preserve natural resources and to develop environment-friendly space in school education is developed, not only organization of curriculums related to these is required but also facilities for the education are indispensable. Therefore, this study tries to suggest several standards on matters including kinds and scale of facilities and the introduction of species by facilities required for outdoor teaming spaces for environmental education in the elementary school system. The methods of this study include researching various records related to environmental education in elementary school, researching the present condition of outdoor learning space installed and operating in the existing schools by making an on-the-spot survey, and analyzing appearance frequencies of plants and animals displayed in the text. In addition, the actual conditions of the facility use and management were investigate through a questionnaire, We chose and diagrammed a model of the installed facilities by putting the results together. For analyses the investigated eight schools, were categorized as ‘facilities-arranged type’or ‘connection type with ecological park’. The first type distributed and arranged facilities, including meteorological observatory, rocky park, experience-learning area, ecological pond, animal-breeding farm and field-leaning area into appropriate locations according to the site conditions of the school while the second type created a natural learning place by integrating several facilities and arranging areas such as an animal-breeding farm and experience-learning area into appropriate sites. In this study, essential facilities for outdoor learning are classified into ecological park, experience-loaming area, field loaming area, and for natural learning, meteorological observatory, animal-breeding farm, and greenhouse.

The Effects of Writing Science Diary on Science Learning Motivation, Science Academic Achievement and Ecological Sensitivity of Elementary Students - Focused on the Unit of the Structure and Function of Plants - (과학일기 쓰기가 초등학생의 과학학습 동기, 과학 학업성취도, 생태적 감수성에 미치는 효과 - "식물의 구조와 기능" 단원을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of writing science diary on science learning motivation, science academic achievement and ecological sensitivity of elementary students. Teaching unit was focused on 'The structure and function of plants' in 6th grade science text book. The subjects of study were 51 students of two classes. One class of 25 students, experimental group, wrote science diaries as homework. While the other class of 26 students, comparative group, performed homeworks with fill-in-the-blank worksheets. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, writing science diary had a meaningful effect on improvement of science learning motivation. Second, writing science diary had a meaningful effect on improvement of science academic achievement. Third, writing science diary had a meaningful effect on improvement of ecological sensitivity. And we could find that students had a favorable impression and high satisfaction level about writing science diary from the questionnaire.
