  • The angled crack which is the simplest and representative case in the mixed mode crack analysis has stimulated the interests of many investigators during past 20 years. In this study the conventional quadratic isoparametric elements were used in all regions except the crack tip zone where triangular singularity elements with 6 nodes were used. The stress intensity factor of K1 and KII were determined respectively by the displacement correlation method. The finite element analysis program in this paper based on maximum energy release rate criteria and the results obtaiend by this program were compared with those calculated from the maximum circumferential tensile criteria and those by Jenq and Shah's experiments of the same geometry and material properties

  • Lifeline system such as oil or gas pipelines and water supply facilities are vulneratble to seismic damages because they are widely exposed to ground failures. Most seismic design criteria of buried pipelines are based on the notion that the longitudinal compressive strain and therefore buckling controls the design. Buckling analysis of buried pipelines subjected to seismic loading is performed by considering the seismic load as the sinusoidally distributed compressive load on the beam on elastic foundation in contrast to existing studies where the buckling load is treated as an end load on the beam column, An approximated analytical solution is obtained by the energy method and its validity is confirmed by the linearized finite element buckling analysis. The results show the beam mode buckling because longitudinal strains at the buckling loads are substantially lower than the strain at the onset of local buckling.

  • Coupling beams serve as primary source of energy dissipation in coupled shear wall systems during large earthquakes. However, the overestimation of the shear strength of diagonally reinforced coupling beams may be adverse effect on the seismic performance of coupled shear wall systems. In order to force coupling beams to properly work during earthquakes, coupling beams should be designed with accurate shear strength equations. The objective of this study is to propose the accurate shear strength equation for slender diagonally reinforced coupling beams. For this purpose, experimental tests were conducted using three diagonally reinforced coupling specimens with different amount of transverse reinforcement under reversed cyclic loads to evaluate the hysteretic behavior of the specimens. The test results show that transverse reinforcement of slender diagonally reinforced coupling beam affects the maximum strength and drift ratio.

  • An experimental study of five full-scale coupling beam specimens has been conducted to investigate the seismic behavior of strengthened RC coupling beams by bolted side steel plates using a reversed cyclic loading procedure. The strengthened coupling beams are fabricated with different plate thicknesses and shear connector arrangements to study their respective effects on load-carrying capacity, strength retention, stiffness degradation, deformation capacity, and energy dissipation ability. The study revealed that putting shear connectors along the span of coupling beams produces no significant improvement to the structural performance of the strengthened beams. Translational and rotational partial interactions of the shear connectors that would weaken the load-carrying capacity of the steel plates were observed and measured. The hierarchy of failure of concrete, steel plates, and shear connectors was identified. Furthermore, detailed effects of plate buckling and various arrangements of shear connectors on the post-peak behavior of the strengthened beams are discussed.

  • Acceleration time history (ATH) used in the seismic analysis should envelop a target power spectral density (PSD) function in addition to the design response spectrum in order to have sufficient energy at each frequency for the purpose of ensuring adequate load. Even though design regulations require the ATH used in seismic analysis to meet a target PSD function, the reason that ATHs meet to a target PSD function is not described. Thus, artificial ATHs for high PSD function and artificial ATHs for low PSD function are generated. And then elastic and inelastic single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems are loaded with these artificial time histories as the earthquake load. As a result, linear response and inelastic response of SDOF systems are affected by PSD function.

  • This experimental study investigates the hysterestic behavior of traditional timber frames subjected to lateral loads. Prototype frames for this study were selected from one of typical national treasures for timber structures in Korea. For simplicity roof structures and braket systems were excluded from specimens and the joint behavior of beam-to-column system were presumed to have crucial effect on their global behavior. The experimental observation showed stiffness degradation and slip after experiencing initial yield and the first cycle at a new larger displacement due to inherent gaps in traditional timber connection and gradual indentation of interfaces, The cyclic behaviors of all specimens were similar to those os modern timber frames with bolt and nail connections. Additional structural members such as an upper beam and clay-filled wall increased the initial stiffness strength and energy dissipation. It is expected that collapse of Korean traditional timber frames under lateral load is mainly caused from P-$\Delta$ effects rather than local member failure.

So Designing weak beam type frame by using SN could be reflected well the original intention. As the strength ratios of beam and column becomes large, the absorption energy is large. • This paper presents the results of a study to verify the sufficient control performance of semiactive tuned mass damper and to identify suitable control methods for semiactive tuned mass damper in structural vibration control. In this study, four control algorithms are considered: on-off displacement based groundhook, on-off velocity based groundhook, clipped optimal and maximum energy dissipation algorithm. For semiactive tuned mass damper, MR damper is considered as a controllable damping device and the command voltage is calculated by the control algorithms. Each of the control theory is applied to the three story shear building excited by three earthquakes. The performance of each algorithm is compared with that of conventional tuned mass damper system using evaluation criteria. The simulation results indicate that semiactive tuned mass damper has control efficiency. Among the control algorithms, on-off displacement based control theory shows the best efficacy and robustness.

  • A new semiactive control strategy for seismic response reduction using a neuro-controller and a magnetorheological (MR) fluid damper is proposed. The proposed control system adopts a clipped algorithm which induces the MR damper to generate approximately the desired force. The improved neuro-controller, which was developed by employing the training algorithm based on a cost function and the sensitivity evaluation algorithm replacing an emulator neural network, produces the desired active control force, and then by using the clipped algorithm the appropriate command voltage is selected in order to cause the MR damper to generate the desired control force. The simulation results show that the proposed semiactive neuro-control algorithm is quite effective to reduce seismic responses. In addition, the semiactive control system using MR fluid dampers has many attractive features, such as bounded-input, bounded-output stability and small energy requirements. The results of this investigation, therefore, indicate that the proposed semiactive neuro-control strategy using MR fluid dampers could be effective used for control seismically excited structures.

  • Masonry-infilled walls have been used in reinforced concrete(RC) frame structures as interior and exterior partition walls. Since these walls are considered as nonstructural elements, they were only considered as additional mass. However, infill walls tend to interact with the structure's overall strength, rigidity, and energy dissipation. Infill walls have been analyzed by finite element method or transposed as equivalent strut model. The equivalent strut model is a typical method to evaluate masonry-infilled structure to avoid the burden of complex finite element model. This study compares different strut models to identify their properties and applicability with regard to the characteristics of the structure and various material models.
