The study was conducted to find effect of irrigation treatment during growth stage on growth and yield of Paeonia lactiflora Pallas L.. In case of top ground part, growth of irrigation treatment at early growing stage(from May 1 to June 12) was larger(stem length of 79.4cm) or thicker(stem diameter of 6.5mm) than stem length of 13.6∼7.4cm and stem diameter of 0.5mm of natural plot and control. The growth of under ground part, root length(34.0cm) and number of root/plant(43.6ea/plant) in irrigation treatment at early growing stage were relatively larger or more number than that of control, and root yield was gained 2,349kg/10a and increased 13% and 8% compare with natural plot and control, respectively. Commercial ratio of root was higher for irrigation treatment at early growing stage, it was increased by 20% than 1,708kg/10a of natural plot.
Heading time was hastened by the combination of seeding time and longday treatment in order to elucidate the effect of early heading on earliness in maturity, vegetative growth and grain yield in five barley varieties and four wheat varieties under field conditions in Suwon, Korea, 1978-79. About 15 days of earliness in heading accelerated only 2 to 6 days in maturity. Furthermore, the duration of grain fill was not much prolonged comparing with the extension of days from heading to maturity, because of the extension of periods from heading to anthesis at lower temperature resulting in somewhat greater final grain weight. Periods from heading to anthesis and from anthesis to maturity were negatively correlated with the air temperature. In early heading, leaf area at 10 days after anthesis and net assimilation rate were much limited, and although leaf area duration got larger, presumably, it could not make up for the reduction of grain yield. Grain yield per plant reduced noticeably in early heading. This was mainly caused by the reduction of spike number and grain number per spike.
This experiment was carried out to evaluate the agronomic stability of North Korean rice varieties using the statistical model developed by Grafius, Finlay, and Ever hart. The lowest yearly variation based on coefficients of variation was found in Hannam 29 for number of panicles per hill, in Sijoong 9 for number of grains per panicle, in Pyeongyang 3 for ripened grain ratio, in Sijoong 16 for 1,000 grain weight, and in Yeomju 1 for grain yield. By Grafius's model, Pyeongbook 3, Weonsan 66 in early maturing groups and Seohaechalbyeo in medium maturing groups show stable for 3 years. Weonsan 66 in early maturing groups and Seohaechalbyeo in medium maturing groups were found to be highly stable as analyzed by both Finlay and Wilkinson's model and Everhart & Russell's model. With reference to three models, Weonsan 66 was highly stable for 3 years with showing more yield than Odaebyeo in early maturing groups while Seohaechalbyeo was highly stable for 3 years with showing high yield than Hwaseongbyeo in medium maturing groups above $5\;t\;ha^{-1}$ of milled rice respectively.

A double-cropping system with soybean (Glycine max) following the cultivation of potato, garlic, and onion is widely adopted in the southern region of Korea. For this system, marginal dates for planting must be determined for profitable soybean yields, because the decision to plant soybean as a second crop is occasionally delayed by harvest of the first crop and weather conditions. In order to investigate the effect of planting date on soybean yield, three cultivars (early and late maturity) were planted on seven different dates from May 1 to July 30 in both paddy and upland fields across 2012 and 2013. Soybean yields were significantly different among the planting dates and the cultivars; however, the interaction between cultivar and planting date was not significant. Based on linear regression, the maximum yield of soybean was reached with a June 10 planting date, with a sharp decline in yield for crops planted after this date. The results of this study were consistent with those of a previous one that recommends early and mid-June as the optimum planting period. Regardless of soybean ecotype, a reduction in yield of greater than 20% occurred when soybean was planted after mid-July. Frost during soybean growth can reduce yields, and the late maturity cultivars planted on July 30 were damaged by frost before completing maturation and harvest; however, early maturity cultivars were safely harvested. For sufficient time to develop and reach profitable yields, the planting of soybean before mid-July is recommended.

Water and phosphorus (P) fertilizer are two of the most critical inputs in rice cultivation. Under climate change scenarios and urbanization, irrigation and fertilizer are becoming limiting factors often leading to significant decrease in yield whenever supplied scarcely. It has been shown that the Pup1 QTL confers tolerance to P starvation and improved early-stage root vigor in indica rice grown in the tropics. However, whether the QTL works in japonica rice genetic background grown in temperate regions remains to be elucidated. Here, we have introgressed the Pup1 QTL into three temperate rice varieties MS11, TR22183, and Dasan using marker-assisted backcrossing and next generation sequencing. The selected lines all harbored the full Pup1 QTL with recurrent parent genome recovery rates ranging from 66.5% to 99.8%. Evaluation of the introgression rice lines grown in South Korea under low inputs of P and water revealed early vegetative growth advantage relative to that of the recurrent parents. Under rainfed condition, Pup1 introgression lines had yield advantage ranging from 7.2 to 19.9% and 24 to 26% in P non-supplied soil and P-supplied soil, respectively compared to that of the recurrent parents suggesting that Pup1 confers enhanced yield under low P and water inputs in temperate rice genetic background grown in temperate climate. In terms of early vegetative growth, temperate Pup1 introgression lines showed a similar trend on the extent to which Pup1 promotes yield advantage in temperate rice in comparison with indica control Pup1 introgression line IR64-Pup1.

In order to reduce the problems from overlapping between rye harvest and maize seeding dates, and also to improve the growth, productivity and nutritive value of rye (Secale cereale L.), an experiment was carried out to determine the variety effect of rye on the forage production system, and seeding date effect on the yield and quality of rye. The experiment was conducted in the forage testing field of S.N.U., Suweon, from September 1988 to May 1989. The dry matter and in vitro digestible dry matter yields of rye harvested 14 April were 5.2 t and 4.6 t/ha with an early maturing rye variety, Winter more, but 3.1 t and 2.8 t/ha were obtained with a late maturing rye variety, Kodiak. When seeding date was delayed, a significant decrease in dry matter yield was observed. ADF and NDF contents, and IVDMD of an early maturing rye, Winter more, harvested 14 April were 25.6, 44.8 and 81.9 %, but those of a late maturing rye, Kodiak, were 21.1, 39.5 and 88.9 %, respectively. ADF and NDF contents of rye were increased as the seeding date was delayed, but ail forage ryes from different seeding dates as well as varieties were recorded as the 1st grade proposed by market hay grades. The dry matter and in vitro digestible dry matter yields of rye harvested at 80 %heading stage were significantly decreased as delayed seeding date, but no significant differences were found between early and late maturing varieties. No differences in ADF and NDF contents, and IVDMD of the rye harvested at 80% heading stage were found among the treatments, but all forage ryes were evaluated as the 4 th grade proposed by market hay grades.

The characters associated with the quality of rice and the factors involved in the production of high quality rice as the proper transplanting time was examined at Unbong the southern alpine area from 2002 to 2004. The rice cultivars tested were Samcheonbyeo (Early maturing one), Sangmibyeo (Sub-early maturing one). The number of spikelets were increased as earlier the transplanting date in all cultivar, The ripened grain rates were highest transplanted on May 21 for Samcheonbyeo, and May 1 for Sangmibyeo. The highest head rice yield was obtained when transplanted on May 21 and May 1 for Samcheonbyeo and Sangmibyeo, respectively. The optimum transplanting dates according to maturing types with respect to the yield of head rice, ripened grain rates and rice quality were May 21 for early maturing type and May 1 for sub-early maturing type.
Yield and growth characteristics were compared for five rice cultivars; a new Tongil-type, so called "super-rice", Dasanbyeo, an old Tongil-type Milyang 23, two japonicas Dongjinbyeo and Ilpumbyeo, and a new plant type (NPT)line IR65600-27-1-2. The objective of this stusy was to clarify the high yielding capacity of Dasanbyeo in terms of growth characteristics. The average grain yield (9 t/ha) of Dasanbyeo was higher than that of Milyang 23 by ca. 9% that of japonicas by 20 to 30%, and that of NPT line by ca. 100%. The higher grain yield of Dasanbyeo was attributable not only to the greater dry matter production but also to the higher harvest index (HI). Dasanbyeo showed the greatest dry matter at harvest owing not only to the rapid leaf expan-sion at early growth stage and the resulting high LAI through the entire growth stage but also to the high NAR despite the high LAI. The rapid leaf expansion of Dasanbyeo at early growth stage seemed to be related in part to the profuse tillering capacity. HI was 0.53 in Dasanbyeo, 0,51 in Milyang 23, 0.41 in japonicas, and 0.35 in NPT line. Dasanbyeo was indebted for its higher HI to the relatively high grain filling ratio in spite of a much greater sink size than the other cultivars. Dasan had a greater source to sink ratio during grain ripening as measured by LAD/spikelet and dry matter production/spikelet which showed positove correlations with the grain ripening ratio. New plant type (NPT) line showed the lowest grain yield owing to the small sink size and the low grain filling ratio which seemed to have resulted from the abundant occurrence of weak-strength spikelets. The weak sink strength, in turn, seemed to have suppressed photosynthesis during the grain ripening stage.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of seeding dates on the yield and feed value of whole-crop barley cultivated in paddy soil. The field experiment was conceived as a randomized block design performed in triplicate with seeding dates of Oct. 19 (T1 as treatment 1), Oct. 26 (T2 as treatment 2), Nov. 2 (T3 as treatment 3), Nov. 9 (T4 as treatment 4), and Nov. 16 (T5 as treatment 5) as treatments. The barley grown in all treatments was harvested on May 21 of the following year. Plant length, fresh yield, dry matter yield, and total digestible nutrient (TDN) yield were higher (p < 0.05) in barley with early seeding dates, whereas crude protein and ether extract were higher (p < 0.05) with late seeding dates. Crude fiber and neutral detergent fiber were highest in the T3 treatment and lowest in the T1 treatment. There was no significant difference between acid detergent fiber and TDN among the different seeding dates. Total mineral contents were higher in the order T1 > T2 > T3 > T4 > T5 (p < 0.05), whereas the total amino acid content increased significantly (p < 0.05) with a delay in seeding date. Free sugar contents (fructose, glucose, and sucrose) were higher with early seeding dates (p < 0.05). Collectively, the results obtained in this study indicate that it is favorable to seed soon after harvesting rice to increase dry matter and TDN yields and mineral and free sugar contents of whole-crop barley in the midlands of Korea.

In order to reduce the problems from the presence of rye crop residues in maize establishment and yield, and also to improve the growth, productivity and nutritive value of rye(Seca1e cereal L.). an experiment was canied out to determine the variety effect of rye on the forage production system and the eft'ect of seeding and harvesting dates on the production and quality of rye. 'This experiment was conducted at the forage testing field of S.N.U., Suweon, from September 1986 to May 1989. Heading date of an early maturing rye variety, Wintermore. was earlier 10 days than that of a late maturing rye variety, Kodiak. A 15-days delay in the seeding dates of early and late maturing varieties of rye tended to delay the heading dates of the rye varieties for 3 and 4 days, respectively. Dry matter and in vitro digestible dry matter yields were markedly increased with earlier seeding date. Before 20 April, the DM and IVDDM yeilds of an early maturing rye variety, Winterrnore. were higher than those of a late maturing rye variety, Kodiak. However, no such a trend was found between the early and late maturing varieties of rye after 27 April. Less than 35% of ADF was recorded until the harvesting dates of 13 and 27 p r i l for early and late maturing rye varieties, respectively, but less than 46% of NDF was maintained until the harvesting drtte of 13 April for botg varieties. Based on the results obtained from this experiment. it may be concluded that the most desirable forage production from corn-rye double cropping system is to advance the seeding time of rye toward the first 10 days of September as well as harvesting time toward the first heading stage with an early maturing rye variety.
