  • The experiment reported here was conducted at Suweon and Sunghwan. to evaluate desirable agronomic characteristics, forage yield and quality of nine introduced oat (Avena sativa L.) cultivars in comparison with the control cultivar Cayuse during the fall and spring seasons for three years. Speed oat and G-sprinter showed earlier in maturity than the control cultivar Cayuse, but Taiho, Zenshin and Almighty were recorded as late types. Taiho, Hay oat and Swallow tended to more lodging than the control cultivar under rainy growing conditions and Taiho, Zenshin and Hay oat were more susceptible to barley yellow dwarf virus among the cultivars tested. At Suweon, the early type cultivars Speed oat and G-sprinter significantly outyielded the control cultivar Cayuse over the 3 years of the fall experiment, but no significant forage yield was found between the early type cultivars and the control in the spring experiment except for 1991 At Sunghwan, the early type Speed oat and late types Almighty and Zenshin significantly outyielded the control in the fall experiment of 1991, but the 3 years of experiment showed no significant difference in the forage yield of oat cultivars in the spring experiment. Over the 3 years of the fall and spring experiments at both Suweon and Sunghwan. the crude protein (CP) content and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of the early types Speed oat and G-sprinter were lower than those of the control and late types, but the acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) contents of the early types Speed oat and G-sprinter were slightly higher than those of the control and late types. Results of this experiment indicate that the early type oat cultivars tended to higher forage yield than the late types when sown in the fall, but no cultivar differences in dry matter yield were found when sown in the spring.

  • Digestion trials were conducted to evaluate intake and digestibility of grass harvested at different dates. Silage was prepared from first-growth forage (predominantly timothy) which cutting dates; 4 June (vegetative, called early-cut) and 30 June (heading, called late-cut). The silage was fed to wethers at restricted and ad libitum levels of intake. The crude protein and crude fat of silage decreased with advancing maturity, while contents of fibre increased. DM intake of early-cut and late-cut silage were $99g/W_{kg}^{0.75}\;and\;75g/W_{kg}^{0.75}$, respectively. In digestibility and TDN, significant differences (p<0.01) between early-cut and late-cut silage were found. There was no significant difference in DM digestibility of early-cut silage between restricted and ad libitum feeding, but DM digestibility was decreased markedly in ad libitum feeding that out of account in fecal condition. Digestibility of all composition in early-cut silage, except for hemicellulose, was not observed with increasing levels of intake. Digestibility of crude protein, NDF and hemicellulose in late-cut silage were decreased (p<0.05) in ad libitum when compared with restricted feeding. Results of this study suggest that digestibility of early and late forages harvested as silage varies with levels of intake. Thus, relationship levels of intake and digestibility must be considered cautiously.

  • To obtain basic information needed for developing better pearl barley varieties, a total of 148 lines of pearl barley were collected from nationwide survey except for Kangwon and Chejoo provinces and classified by principal component analysis. The results are summarized as follows : 1. Variabilities of characters for all lines except for leaf width and 100 K. Wt.(Unpolished) were high enough to indicate variation of lines. 2. Correlation coefficients among 18 characters were high enough and they showed the shape of normal distribution, more or less, inclined toward positive values. 3. The lines could be classified into four groups by correlation coefficient for 18 characters : Group I was characterized as the lines composed of grain and plant type, Group II maturity, Group III the number of tillers, and Group IV the nature of germination, respectively. 4. About 60% of the total variation could be appreciated by the first four principal components and about 89% of the total variation by the first ten principal components. 5. Contribution of characters to principal components was variable and was high at upper principal components and low at lower principal components. 6. The value of eigen vector corresponding to those which had high significant correlation coefficient between characters was almost of the same value. 7. The lines were classified into four groups by principal component analysis. 8. The lines were also classified into four groups by taxonomic distance. Group I included 79 lines, Group II 40 lines, Group III 22 lines, and Group IV 7 lines, respectively. 9. Four groups classified by taxonomic distance could be characterized as follow : Group I : medium height plant, small kernels, medium maturity, and narrow and short leaf, Group II : short height plant, small kernels, early maturity, and narrow and short leaf. Group III : tall height plant, large kernels, late maturity, and broad and long leaf. Group IV : short height plant, large kernels, medium maturity, and narrow and short leaf.

  • Reproductive cycle, gonadosomatic index(GSI), egg diameter composition, first sexual maturity, sexually matured length(50% of first sexual maturity), and sex ratio of Amusium japonicum japonicum, were investigated by histological observations and morphometric data. Samples were collected monthly from the subtidal zone of Sogwipo, Jejudo, Korea, for two years. The sun and moon scallop Amusium japonicum japonicum is dioecious. Monthly variation in the GSI showed similar patterns with the reproductive cycle. Ripe oocytes were about $70{\sim}90\;{\mu}m$ in diameter and had thick egg membranes. The spawning period was from November to January, and the main spawning occurred between November and December when the seawater temperature was relatively low. From monthly changes in egg diameter composition, the spawning period was once a year, although the number of spawning frequencies is assumed to occur more than twice during the spawning season. The reproductive cycle of this species could be divided into five successive stages: early active stage(April to June), late active stage(June to September), ripe stage(October to November), spawning stage(November to January), and spent/resting stage(February to April). First sexual maturities in female and male scallops ranging from 85.1 to 90.0mm in shell length were over 50% and they were 100% for scallops over 90.0mm in shell length. In this population, sexually matured shell lengths(50% of rate of group maturity) in females and males were 86.96 and 86.59mm, respectively. The female to male sex ratio among individuals over 85.1mm in shell length was not significantly different from 1:1($X^2=0.18$, p>0.05). No evidence of hermaphrodite was found in histological sections of any scallop examined.

  • This study was carried out to determine the forage production and quality of Italian ryegrass (IRG) and forage barley sown in early spring in Suwon, 2009. The five treatments used in this experiment were IRG Kowinearly (early maturity), IRG Kowinmaster (medium maturity), Yuyeon barley, Kowinearly + Yuyeon mixture, and Kowinmaster + Yuyeon mixture. The lodging was observed in IRG, but no lodging was found IRG + barley mixtures. The heading date of Kowinearly and Kowinmaster were 16 May and 22 May, respectively, and that of barley was 13 May. The dry matter (DM) percentage at harvest was 22.2~27.6%. The forage quality among treatments were similar, but the crude protein (CP) content of IRG was higher than that of barley, and in vitro DM digestibility was a little low in Kowinmaster. The yields of DM, CP and digestible DM were high in Kowinearly + Yuyeon barley mixtures as a 13,816 kg, 1,384 kg and 10,387 kg per ha, respectively (p<0.05). In conclusion, the mixture cultivation of IRG and forage barley was very effective, because of preventing of IRG lodging, increasing of forage yield, and stable production of forages. The optimum harvest date for silage manufacture of IRG and barley sown in early spring was recommended early June instead of May.

  • "Olgreen" (Scale cereal L.), a new rye variety was developed by National Institute of Crop Science(NICS), RDA. It was released in 2008 because of its high biomass yield potential and early maturity. It was developed from an open pollination within 10 rye varieties or lines including "Chochun" in 1995. The line 'SR95POP-S1-1072-1-2-4' was selected for its early maturity and excellent agronomic appearance, and placed in yield trials for two years from 2004 to 2005. It was designated "Homil 38" and placed in regional yield trials at the four locations around Korea from 2006 to 2008, from which the name "Olgreen" was given. Over three years, "Olgreen" averaged 8.88 ton ha-1 of forage yield (based on dry matter) harvested at late April and superior to other varieties with an increase of 10% more than the check variety "Olhomil", and 9% more than the introduced rye "Koolgrazer". Heading date of "Olgreen" was April 20 which was 3 days earlier than that of "Olhomil". It would be recommended as an early rye variety for forage or green manure in South Korea.

  • This experiment was carried out to obtain genetic information for future corn breeding. The materials used for the study were obtained from the nationwide collection of Korean local corn lines. A total of 262 lines were used for the study of morphological characters and for the classification of lines. Results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. The days to flowering of lines ranged from 57 days to 87 days. Most lines had an average of 67 days of flowering days. 2. The number of tillers of lines showed a lot of variation among lines with 49.2% of coefficient of variation. 3. The coefficients of variation computed based on the phenotypic observation or measurement of each line were 36.1%, 27.2%, 20.0%, 16.4% and 16.3% for kernel weight per ear, 100 kernel weight, ear height, plant height and ear length, respectively. 4. Ear height, ear length, ear diameter, tiller number and days to flowering were highly and positively correlation with the plant height. Kernel size, ear size, and plant height were highly correlated with 100 kernel weight and kernel weight per ear. 5. The 262 corn lines were possibly classified into four major groups by the Euclidean distance. Group I comprised 110 lines, group II 74 lines, group III 66 lines and group IV 12 lines, respectively. Group I was characterized as having early maturity, medium plant height large kernel size and large ear size. Group II had medium maturity, short plant height, medium kernel size and small ear size. Group III had medium maturity, medium plant height, large kernel size and medium ear size. Group IV had late maturity, long plant height, small kernel size, small ear size and many tillering. 6. The plant height showed significant difference between group I and II, II and III, and II and IV group. No statistical differences were observed between group III and IV. The ear size of group I was significantly different from those of group II, III and IV. Also difference of ear size between group II and III was significant. The kernel size, 100 kernel weight and kernel weight per ear were all significantly different among all groups classified. The row number was different between group I and II. The row number of lines in group IV was significantly different with group I, II, III respectively. The number of tillers and flowering days of lines in group IV were greatly different from those of group I, II and III. 7. The corn lines collected from northwest plain regions and middle hilly regions in Korea had medium maturity, medium plant height, large ear and large kernels. The corn lines from middle eastern hilly regions had medium size of ear kernels. The corn lines from middle southern hilly regions had late maturity, small kernel size and many tillers. The corn lines from southwest plain areas had late maturity, long plant height and many tillers.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of maturity and intake on digestibility of grass hay harvested at different dates. Hay was prepared from first-growth forage which cutting dates were: 4 June (vegetative, called early-cut) 30 June (heading, called late-cut). The grass hay fed to wethers at restricted and ad libitum levels of intake. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. As delay in cutting date, contents of crude protein and crude fat decreased, while fibre and lignin increased. 2. On ad libitum feeding of early-cut and late-cut hay, the DM intake were $82g/W_{kg}^{0.75}\;and\;68g/W_{kg}^{0.75}$ respectively. 3. There was no significant difference in dry matter digestibility of early-cut hay between restricted and ad libitum feeding, but dry matter digestibility was decreased markedly in ad libitum feeding when leaves fecal condition out of account. Digestibility of crude protein, organic matter and fibre contained in early-cut hay were tended to decrease slightly in ad libitum when compared with restricted feeding, but were not significantly. 4. Digestibilities decreased significantly with increase of intake in late-cut except for crude protein (P<0.05 or P<0.01). 5. In the comparison of digestibility for all composition, early-cut hay was higher (P<0.01) than late-cut hay.

  • 'Sangdojosaeng' is a new cultivar from bud spot of Citrus unshiu 'Sasaki unshiu' which has late maturity habit. It was found in 1996, and primary selected and named as 'JARES108' in 1998. 'JARES108' was grafted on to adult satsuma mandarin trees in Seogwipo-si and Jeju-si in 2000. Four years survey on the characteristics of trees and fruits from 2003 to 2006 was carried and confirmed the superiority. Thus it was finally selected as 'Sangdojosaeng'. 'Sangdojosaeng' is a very early wase type satsuma mandarin. It shows relatively strong tree vigor among the very early wase type varieties and its branches are spreading. Its ripening time is late October, 25 days earlier than 'Sasaki unshiu'. Compared to 'Ueno wase' which has similar characteristics with 'Sangdojosaeng' such as ripening time, tree vigor, fruit type and peel color, its soluble solid content of fruit is $0.6^{\circ}Bx$ higher and acidity was a little lower than 'Ueno wase'. Because this cultivar has good quality and its tree makes vigorous growth among very early wase type varieties in Jeju, we expect to substitute it for some very early wase type varieties such as 'Miyamoto wase', 'Ichifumi wase', 'Yamakawa wase', etc.

  • This study was conducted to investigate physiologically active components and antioxidant capacity of grapevine leaves at growth stages. The leaves from two strains of grapevine, 'Campbell Early' and 'Rosario Bianco', were collected at five different growth stages (leafing, blossom, fruiting, coloring, and maturity). Total flavonoid content was higher in leafing stage than the other stages and gradually decreased during growing. Total phenol content was higher in 'Campbell Early' than in 'Rosario Bianco'. Hydroxyl radical scavenging ability increased in the leafing stage and decreased during growing. The electron donating ability was higher in 'Campbell Early' then 'Rosario Bianco' until blossom stage. Leaves from 'Campbell Early' showed higher total antioxidant capacity than those from 'Rosario Bianco'. According to the above results, grapevine leaves until the blossom stage would possess strong antioxidant activity by physiologically active components such as polyphenol compounds. Therefore, these results suggest that young grapevine leaves can be used as materials for the development of functional foods.
