This study was carried out to investigate the population changes of Liriomyza trijolii (Burgess) on chrysanthemum and its relationship to plant growth and damages. In spring culture of chrysanthemum, L. trifolii adults begun to be attracted by the yellow sticky trap from early May and maintained high population until the middle of July. Larval density increased gradually from late May and reached peak in early July. In autumn culture, the population density of adult was lower than that of spring culture but the number of adult was great in late September and the middle of October. This trend was similar to that of larval stage. Damaged leaves by larva could be found from 4 weeks after transplanting and its rate was low until 5 weeks but increased abruptly after 6 weeks and maintained 70% level until flowering stage in spring culture. Damaged leaves increased with plant growth in some varieties tested in this experiment.
Although culture techniques for the abalone Haliotis discus hannai are well known, mass culture of the benthic microalgae that are essential live food for the abalone larvae is still not practiced. This study was conducted to identify the microalgal species suitable for the growth of early larvae of H. discus hannai. The growth and attachment rates of 31 microalgal species were examined. Acrylic plates were used as the substrate. Among the 31 microalgal species, nine showing high growth and attachment rates were selected and tested for their dietary values via factors including settlement, metamorphosis, and survival rates of abalone larvae. Tetraselmis hazeni and Rhaphoneis sp. induced the highest settlement rate (65-69%) in abalone larvae. The metamorphosis rate was highest (57%) in larvae fed Rhaphoneis sp. and was also significantly higher in larvae fed Oscillatoria splendida (29%) and T. hazeni (22%) than in those fed other species. The highest survival rate of the larvae during the 15 days after metamorphosis was 67% in those fed Rhaphoneis sp., followed by T. hazeni (42%) and O. splendida (35%). In conclusion, Rhaphoneis sp. is the most suitable diatom for use as a live food for the culture of early larvae of H. discus hannai. In addition, T. hazeni and O. splendida are also potential species to be further developed and utilized in larval culture.
The growth and survival rate of larvae and juveniles from female rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) broodstock in vitellogenesis by injection of 3,5,3'-triiodo-L-thyronine $T_3$ with a dose of 20 mg/kg fish wt. were examined for 30 days and compared with sham-control fish injected dime-thyl sulfoxide and control fish. Larvae were fed with rotifers for first 5 days after parturition, rotifers and Artemia nauplii for next 10 days. And then, they were fed with Artemia nauplii and commercial diet. Growth of larvae and juveniles from maternal $T_3$injection was significantly faster than that of two controls, nevertheless, the condition factor was lower than that of controls. The whole body proximate analyses indicated that there were significant effects of $T_3$ injection on protein and lipid, but no significant on moisture and ash contents. Survival rate of the fish from maternal $T_3$injection was significantly higher than that of fish from the two controls. These results indicate that thyroid hormone supplements appear to confer a distinct advantage to larval and juvenile rockfish in early, fragile development stage.
This study examines the morphological features of larval and postlarval shells of the paedomorphic bivalve Crenella decussata Montagu, 1808 from the Sea of Japan. During the early morphogenesis of the shell of C. decussata the following characteristics appear: prodissoconch I -the anterior and posterior provincular teeth, a broad primary ligament pit located on the chondrophore; nepioconch - the anterior and posterior juvenile teeth, primary lateral teeth, fine commarginal and radial sculpture. Larvae of C. decussata distinctly differ from other mytilid larvae by a D-shaped shell, absence of umbo, astraight hinge margin, and homogeneous fine-grained sculpture without co-marginal lines of growth. These shell characters indicate lecithotrophic development of this species. Some morphostructures are revealed which might be used in crenellin taxonomy.
The hatching of fertilized egg and early development of larval black seabream, Acanthopngrus schlegeli by immersion of 3,5,3'-triiodo-L-thyronine ($T_3$) with doses of 0.01~0.5 ppm in tank were examined for early development periods and compared with control fish immersed by 0.1 N NaOH and 99% alcohol. Larvae were fed with rotifers for first 5 days during experimental period. Yolk absorption of larvae from $T_3$ immersion groups were significantly faster than that of control. Although hatching times among each groups were not significant difference. the hatching rates of larvae in higher doses (0.1 ppm and 0.5 ppm $T_3$ groups) were significantly lower than control. The results of $T_3$ immersion experiments to newly hatching larvae indicated that exogenous $T_3$induced significant faster the absorption of yolk and oil globule, faster the development of myotome and digestive duct and higher the growth rate of larvae than larvae of control. These results indicate that $T_3$ immersion supplements appear to confer a distinct advantage to eggs and larvae of black seabream, which is in early fragile developmental stage.
Since the industrial revolution, seawater has increased in temperature and acidity due to the increase in anthropogenic carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. To understand the effect of elevated $CO_2$ on the early life stages of fish, we reared fertilized eggs of black sea bream Acanthopagrus schlegelii under three $CO_2$ concentrations (400, 850 and 1550 ppm) for 3 weeks. The standard length and wet weight of black sea bream larvae declined with enhanced $CO_2$ concentration in the rearing water (P<0.05). However, chemical analysis using ICP-OES on internal tissues of black sea bream larvae indicated that the whole-body calcium concentration increased with $CO_2$ concentration in the rearing water. These conflicting results suggest that future experiments should examine the acid-base balance to investigate the formation of bone and otolith during larval growth.
The early developmental stages, growth and morphological changes of the Korean bullhead, Pseudobagrus fulvidraco, were studied from a series of reared specimens. Details of the early developmental stages are illustrated with special reference to morphological transformations. Egg and sperm of Korean bullhead were obtained from mature adults under hormonal treatment, fertilized artificially, and incubated in the aquarium. The incubation period of fertilized eggs was 55 to 66 hours at a temperature of 24.9${\pm}$0.34$^{\circ}$. Larvae were fed successively with Artemia salina and Daphnia magna for 2 to 15 days and artificial food after 20 days. Fertilized eggs were adhesive and spherical with a diameter of 2.04mm(n = 100). The mean total length of newly hatched larvae was about 4.92${\pm}$0.33 mm. Mouth opening occurred on one-day-old yolk-sac larvae, and initial feeding was observed on the third day after hatching. The morphological transitions from larvae to juvenile and juvenile to young stages occurred when the fish reached about 17 mm in total length (about 13days after hatching) and about 32 mm in total length (about 30 days after hatching), respectively. Many changes in proportion of body parts to total length were observed at about 7~8 mm and 30~32 mm, corresponding to the transformations from larvae to juvenile and from juvenile to young, respectively. In comparing relative growth of each body part against total length, those characteristics related to head parts showed positive growth in the pre-larval stages, while those concerning mobile abilities showed positive growth in the post-larval stage.
This study aimed to investigate the effects of different water temperature (5, 8 and 11℃) on egg hatch and larval growth of walleye pollock Gadus chalcogrammus to improve rearing techniques for this species. Survival of eggs maintained at 5℃ was higher than that of eggs maintained at 8℃ and 11℃. The greatest hatching rate was obtained for larvae maintained at 8℃. However, time to first, 50% and 100% hatch of eggs maintained at 11℃ was shorter than at 5℃ and 8℃. A higher survival was observed in larvae reared at 5℃ compared to 8℃ and 11℃ and the greatest growth was observed in larvae reared at 11℃ compared to 5℃ and 8℃ during the feeding trial. This study demonstrated the importance of water temperature, as it affects culture performance of eggs and larval pollock. The results from this study provides valuable information for further development of pollock aquaculture.
The larval instar of Scintillatrix djingischani OBENBERGER WES determined by measuring the head width of the larvae, some of which were bred in the room and the other collected in orchards during four years(1963-1966). Their growth ratio and variation were also studied. 1) The variation curve of the head width of the Iarvae distinctly appeared to be seven (7) curves, which seemed to have lived to be over seven(7) instars after six(6) times of molting. 2) In general, tile larvae live out to be 6-7 instar. Those pupated at 6th instar seem to over winter in tissue from November as matured. And those pupated in late Spring or early Summer after over wintering in canbium seem to be at 7th instar. 3) The standard deviation of the head width tends to grow larger except at 1st and 7th instar, while the coefficient of variation tends to decrease according as the number of instar increases. The growth ratio was found to decrease according as the number of instar increase except at 1 at and 2 nd instar. 4) To the growth of tee larval head width of this insect, Games and Campbell's formula was more applicable than Dyar's. 5) From the activties of larvae it is presumed that those bred in the year over winter in phelloderm or canbium at the 2 nd-3 rd instar, and the matured (2 year old) emerge the next year after over wintering in cambium or tissue at the 5th or 6th instar.

The objectives of this study were to study 1) emergence of pine bark beetles, 2) larval density in residual timber on Idlest land by each felling season, and 3) the secondary damage rates in the tended forest. Pine forest land which had undergone tending had a higher secondary damage ratio $(59.6\%)$ by pine bark beetles than forest land that was not tended $(2.8\%)$. The number of escape holes averaged 11.3 0.31 per $250 cm^2$ on the bark of leaf trees in the tended forest. The number of escape holes was higher in the Jinju site than in the Hamyang site. The larval habitat density of pine bark beetles as compared with each felling period was higher after mid-October than in forests tended early in October. Thus, forests should be tended before early October in order to prevent secondary damage from pine bark beetles. Secondary damage in the tended forest was higher in the upper part $(75.5\%)$ of the tree crown than in the lower part $(49.2\%)$. The damage was higher in terminal shoots $(80\%)$ than in lateral shoots $(48\%)$. Therefore, secondary damage by pine bark beetles can cause deterioration of the elongation growth of the forest trees. In conclusion, if by-products of tended pine forest forests are neglected, they will be utilized as a propagation site for pine bark beetles (Blastophagus piniperda L). The propagated adults will damage the tender shoots of the leaf trees and thus seriously limittheir elongation.
