The relations between friendships peer aggression and victimization by peers were examined with a sample of 426 second-grade junior high school students(210 boys and 216 girls) Data were collected using questionnaires regarding friendship(number of friends and presence of a best friend) peer aggression and victimization by peers. The number of friends was significantly related to peer aggression both in boys and girls indicating that the more friends they had the less peer aggression they showed. Peer aggression didn't vary as a function of the presence of a best friend. The number of friends was also significantly related to victimization both in boys and girls. The more friends they had the less victimization they experienced. Victimization varied as a function of the presence of a best friend only in adolescent boys in which those having a best friend were rated by peers to experience less victimization, Victimization was related to peer aggression both in boys and girls. T e more victimization they experienced the more peer aggression they showed.
The short form of the Early Adolescent Temperament Questionnaire-Revised(Ellis & Rothbart, 1999) was translated into Korean for Korean(N=367) and Korean-Chinese(N=258) children and into Chinese for Chinese-Korean(N=232) and Chinese(N=211) children. This 43 item scale of self-ratings was administered to 4th graders by home-room teachers in China and in Korea. Korean-Chinese children rated themselves higher on affiliation, depression, fear, pleasure- and perceptual - sensitivity and shyness than other groups. Chinese-Korean children were higher on affiliation, aggression and frustration, Chinese children were higher on activation control and Korean children rated themselves lowest on all subscales. Korean girls were higher than boys on activation control and affiliation. Korean boys were higher than girls on pleasure sensitivity. Chinese boys were higher than girls on aggression.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation of social support and aggression of early adolescents. The subject were 220 adolescents aged 11 & 14 years, who were enrolled 11 child welfare facilities or 6 public schools(3 elementary & 3 middle schools) in Seoul. That is, 110 institutionalized(IA) & 110 middle class home-reared adolescent (HA)s were examined. They subjects were asked to complete the questionnaire on social support and aggression. According to the results, 1)IAs perceived less support from peers or adults and showed more aggressive behaviors than HAs. 2)Significant sex difference was observed in aggression. Girls showed lower level of aggression than boys. 3)Adolescents' aggression was significantly correlated with social support. The more support from friends, classmates, and parents HAs perceive, the less aggression they reported. Though support from peers was correlated significantly only with anger expression, support from parents was correlated significantly with all the components of aggression. And the more support from friends and classmates HAs perceive, the less aggression they reported. These findings implicate that social support is a important factor in preventing aggressive behaviors of early adolescents.
The goal of this study was to investigate the daily manifestation of positive and negative affect states of early adolescent depression across daily interpersonal contexts. Forty-five boys and 44 girls in the second `year of middle schools participated and were classified into 3 groups according to CDI scores. Among 89 students 59 students in the highest or the lowest CDI groups continued to participate in the next step of this study. Using the Experience Sampling Method(ESM), the 59 students reported their affect states 6 times per day across four daily interpersonal contexts: the contexts alone, with all classmates, with a few friends, and with family members. The major findings were as follows. frst, the high CDI group felt more worried, angrier, more hurried, less happy, less interested, less control, and less relaxed than the low CDI adolescent group. Second, the negative affect states of the high CDI adolescent group did not vary across the interpersonal contexts, whereas their positive affect states were the highest in the context with a few friends. Implications of the findings were discussed in illuminating the phenomenology of adolescent depression.
The objective of this study is to identify the secular trend in age at menarche and to investigate the factors influence the early menarche(<12 years old) among Korean middle and high school girls. We analyzed data from the Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey(KYRBWS) 2006-2014. This study was a descriptive study of 216,917 Korean middle and high school girls born between 1988 and 2002. Linear trends test performed to assess the trend age at menarche and percentage of early menarche. Multiple logistic regression analysis was to assess the risk factors influence the early menarche. Mean age at menarche decreased from $12.61{\pm}1.32$ years for middle and high school girls born 1988 to $11.88{\pm}0.75$ years for those born 2002(p for trends<.001). Percentage of early menarche increased from 19.7% to 25.2% between 1988 and 2002(p for trends<.001). Living in city, higher stress level, short sleep duration, and higher body mass index were associated with an early menarche among middle and high school girls(all p<.001). We found that age at menarche is still falling in the Korean adolescents, and it need intervention strategies to control the early menarche.

Objectives : To assess height, weight and body mass index from childhood to adolescence according to the age at menarche and hence to study the influence of childhood growth on the menarche age. Methods : $\lceil$The Kangwha Study$\rfloor$was a community-based prospective cohort study which included the entire population of 219 female first graders in Kangwha county in 1986. Among the 219 girls, 119 girls who had received complete follow up checks during the study period$(1986\sim1997)$, were included in this study, except one for whom menarche age information was unavailable. The remaining 118 girls were divided into three groups according to the timing of menarche : early(<25 percentile), intermediate and late($\geq75$ percentile) maturers. Results : The average age at menarche was 12.7 years . early 11.3 years, intermediate 12.6 years and late 13.7 years. The early maturers were taller and heavier between $6\sim8$ years. But, the mean weight and body mass index at the menarche age did not differ statistically among the three groups. The weight and body mass index of the early maturers were consistently higher than those of the late maturers over the entire period of the study. Conclusions : Critical body weight and body mass index must be attained for menstruation to be attained and the age at menarche is largely determined by the childhood growth. In addition, it seems that childhood growth and age at menarche are associated with adolescent weight and body mass index.
The main purpose of this study was to find the relationship between the delinquency-onset time in the source and the continuity of delinquency. In order to achieve this objective, we divided 350 first-year high school students into three groups early-onset type, late-onset type, and non-delinquent adolescents on the basis of the delinquency onset. The results of this study were as follow: (1) for the boys, the early-onset type shows a higher continuity of delinquency than both the late-onset type and the general adolescents. On the other hand, for the girls, the early-onset type shows a higher continuity of delinquency than the late-onset type, but there was no difference in the persistence duration between the late-onset type and the non-delinquent adolescents. (2) For the boys, the examination reveals that the early-onset type has a higher degree of sensation seeking and impulsivity than the general adolescents. In addition, the early-onset type shows a higher degree of sensation seeking than the late-onset type, whereas the two show no difference in impulsivity. For the girls, sensation seeking did not show any difference depending on the delinquency onset. However, more impulsivity appeared in the early-onset type than in the late-onset type or the non-delinquent adolescents. (3) The relative priorities of variables determining the group to which the students belong on the basis of the delinquency onset are in the order of sensation seeking and juvenile impulsivity. Therefore, this study, suggests that the early-onset type requires a different kind of intervention than the late-onset type.
The purpose of this study was to examine the paternal involvement tendency and its effect on adolescent's self-esteem for boys and girls. Subjects were 607 1st and 2nd grade middle school students in Busan. The data were analyzed by t-test, one-way Anova, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis. The results were as follows. The scores on paternal involvement were influenced by the amount of time spent with parents, 5days work a week of father, flexibility of leaving work-time of mother, regularity of holiday work of mother as well as adolescents' and fathers' sociodemographic characteristic. For boys, self-esteem was influenced by all sub-scales of paternal involvement : the leisure-life, proffering information, academic support, eveηday life, material support, discipline, and tradition-inheritance. For girls, self-esteem was influenced by leisure-life, proffering information, academic support, everyday life, and material supports.
Purpose: This study aims to investigate the individual and environmental factors related to emotional/behavioral problems to early adolescence in Korea by applying multilevel modeling. Methods: From the database of the 2014 Korean Child and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS), the researchers selected 1,977 adolescents who are in the second year of middle school. Multilevel model analysis was performed to estimate the impact of relevant factors at the individual and environmental levels. Results: At the individual level, the significant factors associated with emotional/behavioral problems included BMI and study tendency in boys, and drinking, study tendency and economic levels in girls. At the environmental level, the significant factor associated with emotional/behavioral problems included relationship with the teacher. Conclusion: The emotional/behavioral problems of early adolescence are influenced not only by the individual factors but also by the environment factor. Therefore, the environment surrounding the adolescents should also be considered to prevent emotional/behavioral problems.
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of family mealtime and family functioning (family cohesion, family adaptability, and communication with father and mother) on early adolescent school adaptation. Data of 3,145 middle school students from the Survey on the Family Values and Lives among Adolescents(2010) conducted by National Youth Policy Institute(NYPI) were used. The findings are as follows. First, there were significant differences in the frequency of having breakfast and dinner with father and having breakfast with mother, family cohesion, and communication with father according to gender. Second, hierarchical linear regression analyses revealed that household economic status, mother's employment status and adolescents' gender among demographic characteristics, having breakfast with father and having dinner with mother in family mealtime frequency, and all the variables of family functioning predicted adolescents' school adaptation. Finally, economic status, having dinner with mother, family cohesion, and communication with father and mother were associated with adolescents' school adaptation for both boys and girls. Mother's education and having breakfast with father were found to be significant for only boys, while mother's employment status and family adaptability were found to be significant for only girls. These findings could provide grounds for making family and education policy.
