  • This paper addresses the problem of scheduling a set of jobs with a common due data on a single machine. The objective is to minimize the sum of the earliness and tardiness of jobs subject to $T_{max}{\le}{\Delta}\;for{\Delta}{\ge}0$. Properties for the $MAD/T_{max}$ problem are found and the problem is shown to be NP-complete in the ordinary sense. According to the range of Δ, the problem can be solved in polynomial time. Also, some special cases where an optimal schedule is found in polynomial time are discussed.

  • In this paper, scheduling problem is dealt for the minimization of due date penalty for the customer order. Multiproduct batch processes have been dealt with for their suitability for high value added low volume products. Their scheduling problems take minimization of process operation for objective function, which is not enough to meet the customer satisfaction and the process efficiency simultaneously because of increasing requirement of fast adaptation for rapid changing market condition. So new target function has been suggested by other researches to meet two goals. Penalty function minimization is one of them. To present more precisely production scheduling, we develop new scheduling model with penalty function of earliness and tardiness We can find many real cases that penalty parameters are divergent by the difference between the completion time of operation and due date. That is to say, the penalty parameter values for the product change by the customer demand condition. If the order charges different value for due date, we can solve it with the due date period. The period means the time scope where penalty parameter value is 0. If we make use of the due date period, the optimal sequence of our model is not always same with that of fixed due date point. And if every product have due date period, due date of them are overlapped which needs optimization for the maximum profit and minimum penalty. Due date period extension can be enlarged to makespan minimization if every product has the same abundant due date period and same penalty parameter. We solve this new scheduling model by simulated annealing method. We also develop the program, which can calculate the optimal sequence and display the Gantt chart showing the unit progress and time allocation only with processing data.

  • In this paper we research the problem in which the objective is to minimize the sum of squared deviations of job expected completion times from the due date, and the job processing times are stochastic. In the problem the machine is subject to stochastic breakdowns and all jobs are preempt-repeat. In order to show that the replacing ESSD by SSDE is reasonable, we discuss difference between ESSD function and SSDE function. We first give an express of the expected completion times for both cases without resampling and with resampling. Then we show that the optimal sequence of the problem V-shaped with respect to expected occupying time. A dynamic programming algorithm based on the V-shape property of the optimal sequence is suggested. The time complexity of the algorithm is pseudopolynomial.

  • This research is concerned with n jobs, m parallel identical machines scheduling problem in which all jobs have a common due date. The objective of the research is to develop an optimum scheduling algorithm for determining an optimal job sequence, the optimal value of the common due date and the minimum makespan to minimize total cost. The total cost is based on the common due date cost, the earliness cost, the tardiness cost and the flow time cost of each job in the selected sequence. The optimum scheduling algorithm is developed. A numerical example is given to illustrate the scheduling algorithm.

  • In order to maximize an availability of machine and utilization of space, the parallel machines scheduling problem with space limit is frequently discussed in the industrial field. In this paper, we consider a scheduling problem for assembly machine in ship engine assembly shop. This paper considers the parallel machine scheduling problem in which n jobs having different release times, due dates and space limits are to be scheduled on m parallel machines. The objective function is to minimize the sum of earliness and tardiness. To solve this problem, a heuristic is developed. The proposed heuristic is divided into three modules hierarchically: job selection, machine selection and job sequencing, solution improvement. To illustrate its effectiveness, a proposed heuristic is evaluated with a large number of randomly generated test problems based on the field situation. Through the computational experiment, we determine the job selection rule that is suitable to the problem situation considered in this paper and show the effectiveness of our heuristic.

Branch and Bound Approach for Single-Machine Sequencing with Early/Tardy Penalties and Sequence-Dependent Setup Cost

  • The network representation and branch and bound algorithm with efficient lower and upper bounding procedures are developed to determine a global optimal production schedule on a machine that minimizes sequence-dependent setup cost and earliness/tardiness penalties. Lower bounds are obtained based on heuristic and Lagrangian relaxation. Priority dispatching rule with local improvement procedure is used to derive an initial upper bound. Two dominance criteria are incorporated in a branch and bound procedure to reduce the search space and enhance computational efficiency. The computational results indicate that the proposed procedure could optimally solve the problem with up to 40 jobs in a reasonable time using a personal computer.

  • In this paper, we address a single machine non-preemptive n-job scheduling problem to minimize the sum of earliness and tardiness with different release times and due dates. To solve the problem, we propose a genetic algorithm with new crossover and mutation operators to find the job sequencing. For the proposed genetic algorithm, the optimal pair of crossover and mutation rates is investigated. To illustrate the suitability of genetic algorithm, solutions of genetic algorithm are compared with solutions of exhaustive enumeration method in small size problems and tabu search method in large size problems. Computational results demonstrate that the proposed genetic algorithm provides the near-optimal job sequencing in the real world problem.

  • in the real world situations that some jobs need be processed only on certain limited machines frequently occur due to the capacity restrictions of machines such as tools fixtures or material handling equipment. In this paper we consider n-job non-preemptive and m parallel machines scheduling problem having two machines group. The objective function is to minimize the sum of earliness and tardiness with different release times and due dates. The problem is formulated as a mixed integer programming problem. The problem is proved to be Np-complete. Thus a heuristic is developed to solve this problem. To illustrate its suitability and efficiency a proposed heuristic is compared with a genetic algorithm and tabu search for a large number of randomly generated test problems in ship engine assembly shop. Through the experimental results it is showed that the proposed algorithm yields good solutions efficiently.

A Genetic Algorithm with a New Repair Process for Solving Multi-stage, Multi-machine, Multi-product Scheduling Problems

  • Companies that produce capital goods need to schedule the production of products that have complex product structures with components that require many operations on different machines. A feasible schedule must satisfy operation and assembly precedence constraints. It is also important to avoid deadlock situations. In this paper a Genetic Algorithm (GA) has been developed that includes a new repair process that rectifies infeasible schedules that are produced during the evolution process. The algorithm was designed to minimise the combination of earliness and tardiness penalties and took into account finite capacity constraints. Three different sized problems were obtained from a collaborating capital goods company. A design of experimental approach was used to systematically identify that the best genetic operators and GA parameters for each size of problem.

  • Evolutionary algorithm is recognized as a promising approach to solving multi-objective combinatorial optimization problems. When no preference information of decision makers is given, multi-objective optimization problems have been commonly used to search for diverse and good Pareto optimal solution. In this paper we propose a new multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on competitive coevolutionary algorithm, and demonstrate the applicability of the algorithm. The proposed algorithm is designed to promote both population diversity and rapidity of convergence. To achieve this, the strategies of fitness evaluation and the operation of the Pareto set are developed. The algorithm is applied to job shop scheduling problems (JSPs). The JSPs have two objectives: minimizing makespan and minimizing earliness or tardiness. The proposed algorithm is compared with existing evolutionary algorithms in terms of solution quality and diversity. The experimental results reveal the effectiveness of our approach.
