  • DRM(Digital Rights Management) is essential for the copy right protection of eBooks based on ePub 3.0 by IDPF. In this paper, we developed eBSS(eBook Service System) as ePub 3.0 builder and viewer system with DRM and proposed an efficient DRM method which improves the performance of contents generation, security and distribution system. The efficient application of DRM method to the eBook contents based on ePub 3.0 for smart phone is practically useful for eBook service system. It is very useful for the suggested eBSS with DRM method and strategy to apply easily and practically to the encryption and decryption of the eBook contents. Also, it is very efficient to generate the ePub 3.0 contents and to apply DRM method to it especially, by using practically this suggested ePub 3.0 builder system from the view point of the eBook content generation and its viewer such as eBook reader for user and eBook providers.

  • Objective: The aim of the study is to evaluate the difference of legibility between e-book and paper-book by using eye-tracker. Background: Despite of many researches on the e-book and paper-book, there are few researches on the difference between e-book and paper-book. In addition, the researches on the e-book were only dependent on the e-book reader. This study focused on the comparison of e-book and paper-book controlled with the same environments. Method: This study was conducted with $2{\times}3$ within-subject design. Independent variables include the types of book (e-book, paper-book) and font sizes (8pt, 10pt, 12pt). Dependent variables are four measures of fixation duration, saccade length, blink rate and subjective discomfort. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with repeated measured design was used to investigate the main and interaction effects of independent variables on each of the dependent variables. The multiple comparisons were performed by post hoc analysis and Bonferroni correction was applied. Results: Fixation duration at e-book was longer than paper-book (p<0.01). Saccade length at e-book was shorter than paper-book (p<0.05). Blink rate at e-book was higher than paper-book (p<0.1). Subjective discomfort at e-book was higher than paper-book (p<0.1). Legibility at 8pt was better than 10pt, 12pt (p<0.01) in fixation duration, saccade length and subjective discomfort. Conclusion: It was found that the legibility at e-book are worse than paper-book from this study. These results indicated that the legibility of e-book was needed to be validated and improved to replace the paper-book. Application: This study suggests improving something related to fixation duration, saccade length, blink rate and subjective discomfort for betterment of e-book.

  • The emergence of E-book have allowed readers to interact with other readers and to actively participate (e.g. social reading). Furthermore, there is a growing demand in writer's community to take the advantage of the feedback from their readers to update the content of E-book. To do that, they require the service that utilizes the user feedback while creating or updating the e-book content. This study aims to let authors collect and to apply the reader's feedback on E-book content. However, in order to apply the user feedback, users first need to explicitly type the feedback, and even if they do, authors need to develop the software to automatically analyze and to apply the user feedback. This makes difficult for authors without programming background to produce E-book with automatic content adaptation. In this paper, we propose Feedback Clue Model to generate, analyze and apply the user feedback into E-book content. Based on this model, we develop the block editor which allows easy implementation of E-book that can be dynamically updated.

  • Electronic books offer various possibilities for expanding access as well as changing reading behavior in our life. However despite the considerable promise of e-book, e-book market was not vitalized than re expected. This study investigated the current e-book environment and suggest some guidelines for making e-books a viable part of libraries' collections and our reading life. Findings and issues about the status of the current e-book market and technologies, and some experience of libraries in the advanced countries give us a lesson for the Korean library societies.

  • This paper presents an edutainment robot for young children. The edutainment robot called 'Mon-e' has developed by the Central R&D Laboratory at KT. The main services of the Mon-E robot are autonomous moving service, object card and story book telling service and videophone service. The RFID technology was introduced for easy interface to young children. The face of Mon-E robot is mounted with an RFID reader. The RFID tag is pasted on story book and object card. If you approach a book or an object card to the face of Mon-E, the Mon-E robot recognizes the identified code and plays its service. In autonomous moving, if the Mon-E robot meets obstacles, it moves back and turns left or right or half rotation. In videophone service, if young children approach an RFID card to the Mon-E, the Mon-E can make a call to the specific number, which is contained in the RFID card. The developed Mon-E robot has tested in real world environment and is evaluated young children and their parents. In the result of evaluation, the feeling of satisfaction was high to main services of Mon-E robot.

  • This study aims to define the user experience and to evaluate the usability toward electronic publication for education and research. As research methods, After total 20 people of 10 undergraduate students and 10 graduate students were randomly selected as the subjects, the research was conducted by using the in-depth interview and the e-book reader experimental method. As the results of analysis about subjective preferences in case of using academic resources, The subject relevance and understandability were responded as most important factors for selecting academic resources. And the most frequent purposes for using academic resources were to perform an assignment and to write an article. As the results of analysis about the user experience for using the print media and electronic media, the user experience of the print media is more positive than the electronic media and especially these results were caused by academic situation. Many subjects responded that the electronic media is more inconvenient in case of using academic resources. As a result of the e-book reader usability test, the hardware test score (3.47) is higher than the software test score (3.31).

  • The user interfaces of electronic-book (e-book) readers in the e-book market are highly diverse, and this has led to major usability issues. In this paper, we analyze user preferences in terms of feature-setting options and the use of touchscreen actions in the six most commonly used e-book readers for smartphnoes. We identify alternatives for these features, which can enhance the usability of e-book readers, based on these user preferences. The survey results for the feature-setting options show that it is desirable to support at least eight background colors, as well as the ability to specify the color of the background icons. Adjusting the screen brightness using a setting bar with the support of an auto-brightness option is desirable, as in using +/- buttons to adjust the font size, as well as approximately 10 font faces. We find that it is desirable to support fade, slide, scroll and curl page-turing options, in addition to a simple non-animated page-turning effect, and that page movement should be accomplished using a scroll bar with the support of the page movement features by entering a page number, and by using the table of contents as well as bookmarks. The survey results on the use of touchscreen options indicated that it is useful to be able to configure the screen layout of an e-book reader by dividing it into three areas: left, right, and center. And then, when users briefly touch the left and right areas, it is ideal to move to the previous and subsequent pages, respectively; and when they briefly touch the center region, it is desirable to display a touch feature menu. We believe that the results of this study may provide guidance in the design of user interfaces for e-book readers.
