Long-span cable-supported bridges are flexible structures vulnerable to unsymmetric loadings such as railway traffic and strong wind. The torsional dynamic response of long-span cable-supported bridges under running trains and/or strong winds may deform the railway track laid on the bridge deck and affect the running safety of trains and the comfort of passengers, and even lead the bridge to collapse. Therefore, it is eager to figure out the torsional dynamic response of long-span cable-supported bridges under running trains and/or strong winds. The Tsing Ma Bridge (TMB) in Hong Kong is a suspension bridge with a main span of 1,377 m, and is currently the world's longest suspension bridge carrying both road and rail traffic. Moreover, this bridge is located in one of the most active typhoon-prone regions in the world. A wind and structural health monitoring system (WASHMS) was installed on the TMB in 1997, and after 17 years of successful operation it is still working well as desired. Making use of one-year monitoring data acquired by the WASHMS, the torsional dynamic responses of the bridge deck under rail traffic and strong winds are analyzed. The monitoring results demonstrate that the differences of vertical displacement at the opposite edges and the corresponding rotations of the bridge deck are less than 60 mm and $0.1^{\circ}$ respectively under weak winds, and less than 300 mm and $0.6^{\circ}$ respectively under typhoons, implying that the torsional dynamic response of the bridge deck under rail traffic and wind loading is not significant due to the rational design.
For the general loading condition and boundary condition, it is very difficult to obtain closed-form solutions for buckling loads and natural frequencies of thin-walled structures because its behaviour is very complex due to the coupling effect of bending and torsional behaviour. Consequently most of previous finite element formulations introduced approximate displacement fields using shape functions as Hermitian polynomials, isoparametric interpoation function, and so on. The purpose of this study is to calculate the exact displacement field of a thin-walled straight beam element with the non-symmetric cross section and present a consistent derivation of the exact dynamic stiffness matrix. An exact dynamic element stiffness matrix is established from Vlasov's coupled differential equations for a uniform beam element of non-symmetric thin-walled cross section. This numerical technique is accomplished via a generalized linear eigenvalue problem by introducing 14 displacement parameters and a system of linear algebraic equations with complex matrices. The natural frequencies are evaluated for the non-symmetric thin-walled straight beam structure, and the results are compared with available solutions in order to verify validity and accuracy of the proposed procedures.
When the centers of mass and stiffness of a building do not coincide, the structure experiences torsional responses. Such systems can consist of the underlying soil and the super-structure. The underlying soil may modify the earthquake input motion and change structural responses. Specific effects of the input motion shall also not be ignored. In this study, seismic demands of asymmetric buildings considering soil-structure interaction (SSI) under near-fault ground motions are evaluated. The building is modeled as an idealized single-story structure. The soil beneath the building is modeled by non-linear finite elements in the two states of loose and dense sands both compared with the fixed-base state. The infinite boundary conditions are modelled using viscous boundary elements. The effects of traditional and yield displacement-based (YDB) approaches of strength and stiffness distributions are considered on seismic demands. In the YDB approach, the stiffness considered in seismic design depends on the strength. The results show that the decrease in the base shear considering soft soil induced SSI when the YDB approach is assumed results only in the center of rigidity to control torsional responses. However, for fixed-base structures and those on dense soils both centers of strength and rigidity are controlling.
In view of the importance of the wind-structure interaction for tall and slender structures, an aeroelastic model test of the 610m-high TV tower with a complex and unique structural configuration and appearance carried out successfully. The assembled aeroelastic model of the TV tower with complex shape and structure was designed and made to ensure the similarities of the major natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes. The simulation of the atmospheric boundary layer with higher turbulent intensity is presented. Since the displacement and acceleration responses at several measurement sections were directly measured in the wind tunnel test, a multi-mode approach was presented to indirectly estimate the displacement and acceleration responses at arbitrary structural floors based on the measured ones. It can be seen that it is remarkable for the displacement and acceleration responses of the TV tower in the two horizontal directions under wind loads and is small for the dynamic response of the torsional displacement and acceleration.

Most buildings feature core walls (and shear walls) that are placed eccentrically within the building to fulfil architectural requirements. Contemporary earthquake design standards require three dimensional (3D) dynamic analysis to be undertaken to analyse the imposed seismic actions on this type of buildings. A static method of analysis is always appealing to design practitioners because results from the analysis can always be evaluated independently by manual calculation techniques for quality control purposes. However, the equivalent static analysis method (also known as the lateral load method) which involves application of an equivalent static load at a certain distance from the center of mass of the buildings can generate results that contradict with results from dynamic analysis. In this paper the Generalised Force Method of analysis has been introduced for multi-storey buildings. Algebraic expressions have been derived to provide estimates for the edge displacement ratio taking into account the effects of dynamic torsional actions. The Generalised Force Method which is based on static principles has been shown to be able to make accurate estimates of torsional actions in seismic conditions. The method is illustrated by examples of two multi-storey buildings. Importantly, the black box syndrome of a 3D dynamic analysis of the building can be circumvented.

The new method for evaluating the displacement tolerance of sky-bridges with pin-roller type supports was proposed considering both return period of phase difference between connected buildings and geometrical characteristics of skybridge. Because displacement tolerance is relative value, which is most affected by the phase difference of the connected buildings, the dynamic response of these building with time history analysis should be evaluated. However, the initial phase could not be specified, so the result of displacement tolerance would be varied with respect to initial value. Thus, the tolerance can be reasonably evaluated SRSS calculation with design displacements based on statistical approach and of each building. In addition, the geometrical characteristics of sky-bridge should be considered because the transverse displacement of sky-bridge span causes the shear deformation of the bridge and longitudinal displacement tolerance cannot release the shear deformation. Therefore, the some pin-end support in sky-bridge should have longitudinal displacement tolerance to accommodate the shear deformation. By resolving this shear deformation, it is possible not only to accommodate transverse displacement, but also to avoid the complicated joint details such as both pot bearing and guided supports with shear key.
This paper presents theoretical investigation on the cross correlation between torsional vibration ($u_{\theta}$) and translation vibration ($u_x$) of asymmetrical structure under white noise excitation. The formula reveals that the cross correlation coefficient (${\rho}$) is a function of uncoupled frequency ratio (${\Omega}={\omega}_{\theta}/{\omega}_x$), eccentricity, and damping ratio (${\xi}$). Simulations involving acceleration records from fifteen different earthquakes show correlation coefficients results similar to the theoretical correlation coefficients. The uncoupled frequency ratio is the dominating parameter to ${\rho}$; generally, ${\rho}$ is positive for ${\omega}_{\theta}/{\omega}_x$ > 1.0, negative for ${\omega}_{\theta}/{\omega}_x$ < 1.0, and close to zero for ${\omega}_{\theta}/{\omega}_x$ = 1.0. When the eccentricity or damping ratio increases, ${\rho}$ increases moderately for small ${\Omega}$ (< 1.0) only. The relation among $u_x$, $u_{\theta}$ and corner displacement are best presented by ${\rho}$; a simple way to hand-calculate the theoretical dynamic corner displacements from $u_x$, $u_{\theta}$ and ${\rho}$ is proposed as an alternative to dynamic analysis.
In an actual design, none of the structures with shear behaviors will be designed for torsional moments. Any failure or damages to roofs, infills, shear walls, and braces caused by an earthquake, will inevitably result in relocation of center of mass and rigidity of the structure. With these changes, the dynamic characteristics of structure could be changed during an earthquake at any moment. The main objective of this paper is to obtain the relationship between time-varying eccentricity of load and corner lateral displacement. In this study, various methods have been used to determine the structural response for time-varying lateral corner displacement. As will be seen below, some of the structural calculation methods result in a significant deviation from the actual results, although these methods include the interaction effects of modes. Controlling the lateral displacement of structure can be performed in different ways such as, passive dampers, friction dampers, semi-active systems including the MR damper and active Systems. Selecting and locating these control systems is very important to bring the maximum safety with minimum cost into the structure. According to this study will be show the relation between the corner lateral displacements of structure and time-varying eccentricity by different kind of methods during an earthquake. This study will show that the response of the structure at the corners due to an earthquake can be very destructive and because of changing the eccentricity of load, calculating the maximum possible response of system can be carried out by this method. Finally, some kind of systems must be used for controlling these displacements. The results shows that, the CQC, DSC and exact methods is comply each other but the results of Vanmark method is not comfortable for these kind of buildings.
