Relation between condensate retention and heat transfer performance is studied for condensation of CFC-11 on horizontal integral-fin tubes. Eight tubes with trapezoidally shaped integral fin density from 738fpm to 1654fpm and 10, 30 grooves are tested. The liquid retention angles are measured by the height gauge, and each tube is tested under static(non-condensing) condition (CFC-11, water) and under dynamic(condensing) condition (CFC-11). The analytical model predicts the amount of liquid retention on a horizontal integral-fin tubes within+10 percent over most of the data. Average retention angle increases as both surface tension-to-density ratio($\sigma/\rho$) and fin density(fpm) increase, The tube having a fin density of 1299~1654fpm has the best heat transfer performance. The amount of surface flooding must keep below of 40 percent for best heat transfer performance at condensation. The tube having low number of fin density must be used for fluids having high values of $\sigma/\rho$(water, (TEX)$NH_3$, ect.) and the tube having high number of fin density must be used for the fluid having low values of $\sigma/\rho$(R-11, R-22, etc.)
Dynamic behavior of immiscible gas bubble attached to the wall in channel flow plays very important role in many engineering applications. Special attention has been paid to micro direct methanol fuel cell(${\mu}$DMFC) where surface tension becomes dominant factor with minor gravitational effect due to its reduced size. Therefore, displacement of $CO_2$ bubble generating on a cathode side in ${\mu}$DMFC can be very difficult and efficient removal of $CO_2$ bubbles will affect the overall machine performance considerably. We have focused our efforts on studying the dynamic behavior of immiscible bubble attached to the one side of the wall on 2D rectangular channel subject to external shear flow. We used Level Contour Reconstruction Method(LCRM) which is the simplified version of front tracking method to track the bubble interface motion. Effects of Reynolds number, Weber number, advancing/receding contact angle and property ratio on bubble detachment characteristic has been numerically identified.
Dynamic behaviors of the GMAW system are simulated using the short-circuit transfer model and the characteristic equations fir the power supply, wire system and arc. The conventional wire equation, which relates the rate change of the wire extension to the wire feed rate and melting rate, is modified to include effects of the molten drop attached at the wire tip. The modified wire equation describes behaviors of the GMAW system more precisely and provides information about the initial bridge volume for short-circuit transfer. The proposed short-circuit model predicts the variation of parameters such as the current, voltage, short-circuit frequency and time considering the effects of the surface tension and electromagnetic force due to current. The calculated results are in broad agreements with the experimental results under the argon shielding condition.

Thermocapillary convection is a surface tension driven flow due to a temperature gradient along an interface. It occurs during a crystal-growth process and therefore understanding the convection is important to material processing in microgravity. Although modelling of the float-zone crystal-growth process has been of interest for a few decades, most studies of liquid bridges assumed non-deformable flat surfaces. In reality, the surface profile, g(t,z), is unknown and should be obtained as a solution to the coupled transport equations along with the surface force balance. Here we report on a numerical study of axisymmetric thermocapillary convection in liquid bridges with deformable surfaces. The interface is determined as part of the complete solution. The influence of the capillary number (Ca), Reynolds number (Re), Prandtl number (Pr) and aspect ratio(Ar) on the dynamics is explored.
The design of large offshore structures and their operations depend critically upon the wave-induced loads and motions. Thus, over the last two decades, substantial efforts have been devoted to the development of various principles and methods which can provide these predictions in a reliable and efficient manner.(omitted)
This paper presents ductile fracture simulation of full-scale cracked pipe for nuclear piping materials using the cohesive zone model (CZM). The main objective of this study is to investigate the applicability of CZM to predict ductile fracture of cracked pipes with various crack shapes and under quasi-static/dynamic loadings. The transferability of the traction-separation (T-S) curve from a small-scale specimen to a full-scale pipe is demonstrated by simulating small- and full-scale tests. T-S curves are calibrated by comparing experimental data of compact tension specimens with finite element analysis results. The calibrated T-S curves are utilized to predict the fracture behavior of cracked pipes. Three types of full-scale pipe tests are considered: pipe with circumferential through-wall crack under quasistatic/dynamic loadings, and with 360° internal surface crack under quasi-static loading. Computational results using the calibrated T-S curves show a good agreement with experimental data, demonstrating the transferability of the T-S curves from small-scale specimen.
The interest in the dynamic properties of soils has increased strongly because of earthquake, heavy traffic, and foundations undergo high amplitude of vibrations. Most of soils in Korean peninsula are composed of granite soils, especially the decomposed mudstone soils are widely spread in Pohang areas, Kyong-buk province. Therefore, it Is very important to investigate the dynamic properties of these types of soils. The most important soil parameters under dynamic loadings are shear modulus and material dampings. Furthermore, few definitive data exist that can evaluate the behavior of unsaturated decomposed mudstone soils under dynamic loading conditions. The investigations described in this paper is designed to identify the shear modulus and damping ratio due to a surface tension for the unsaturated decomposed mudstone soils ulder low and high strain amplitude, For this purpose, the resonant column test and the cyclic triaxial test were performed. Test results and data have shown that the optimum degree of saturation under low and strain amplitude is 32 ∼ 37% which is higher than that of decomposed granite due to the amount of fine particles as well as the type and proportion of chief rock-forming minerals.
Several interesting results were obtained from the flow visualization experiment in the accompanying paper, Part I. in the present study, Part II, a numerical study has been carried out to explain the detailed flow phenomena in micro-channel filling process. Hele-Shaw flow approximation was applied to the micro-channel geometry based on the small characteristic length. And surface tension effect has been introduced on the flow front as the boundary condition with the help of a dynamic contact angle concept between the melt front and the wall. A dimensional analysis for numerical results was carried out and a strong relationship between dimensionless pressure and Capillary number is obtained. The numerical analysis results are compared with the flow visualization experimental observations. And the numerical system developed in the present study seems to be able to predict the interesting micro-channel filling flow characteristics observed from experiments.
In this paper, forced vibration was used to regulate the droplet migration, fully recording the transient migration of droplets on a micro-textured substrate under the resonance frequency by a high-speed camera. The influence of resonance frequency and dynamic migration characteristics of droplets on the solid micro-texture surface under lateral vibration were researched. The experiment demonstrates that the driving force is caused by the difference between the left and right contact angles made the droplet oscillate and migrate, and as time t increases, the left and right contact points are periodically shifted and the amplitude of migration increases. Therefore, based on the droplet migration behavior and its force balance mechanism, a spring vibration model of migration behavior of the vibrating droplet micro unit was set up to predict the complete trajectory of its migration on a solid surface. The calculation results show that the theoretical displacement is less than the experimental displacement, and the longer the time, the larger the difference. Affected by the vibration, part of the droplet permeates through the micro-texture, resulting in the droplet losing height and the contact angle becoming smaller as well. While the other part of droplet overcomes the internal surface tension to migrate.
In this paper, a high-speed imaging and an image processing technique have been applied to detect the position of a meniscus as a function of time in the micro capillary flows. Two fluids with low and high viscosities, ethylene glycol and glycerin, were dropped into the entrance well of a circular capillary tube. The filling times of the meniscus in both cases of ethylene glycol and glycerin were compared with the theoretical models - Washburn model and its modified model based on Newman's dynamic contact angle equation. To evaluate the model coefficients of Newman's dynamic contact angle, time-varying contact angles under the capillary flows were measured using an image processing technique. By considering the dynamic contact angle, the estimated filling time from the modified Washburn model agrees well with the experimental data. Especially, for the lower-viscosity fluid, the consideration of dynamic contact angle is more significant than for the higher-viscosity fluid.
