  • This paper deals with the development of a new type of simulator for the study of the dynamic performance of an HVDC scheme. The new simulator uses a digital model of the power equipment and an analogue model of the existing HVDC controller. This simulator is used to study the dynamic performance of the Cheju - Haenam HVDC system and to verify the control characteristics of the HVDC system. The paper discusses the simulator development requirements and criteria. The paper provides guidelines for the development of the simulator and presents the results of the simulation studies.

  • This paper presents the analysis for power consumption, mechanical vibration and acoustic noise characteristics of the Coreless and Slotless Brushless DC motor in Digital Lightening Processor(DLP) Motor with the Air-Dynamic Bearing. The Coreless BLDC motor has not the stator yoke as well as the stator slot to remove the unbalance force by the interaction between the stator yoke and Air-Dynamic Bearing clearance. The assembling tolerance and the processing error make the air-gap difference between the magnet and the stator yoke .which occurs the unbalanced electro-magnetic force in the Slotless BLDC motor. It imposes the air-dynamic bearing on the disturbance force and makes the Air-Dynamic Bearing vibrated and noised. Also, The attractive force between the magnet and the silicon steel stator yoke increases the power consumption. In this paper, the power consumption, mechanical vibration and acoustic noise of the Coreless BLDC motor and the Slotless BLDC motor with the silicon steel stator yoke are simulated, analyzed, and tested using the manufactured proto-type motors with Air-Dynamic bearing. The simulated and tested results present that the Coreless BLDC motor without the silicon steel stator yoke has the lower mechanical vibration and noise ,and lower power consumption than the Slotless BLDC motor with the silicon steel stator yoke in Digital Lightening Processor Motor with Air-Dynamic Bearing.

  • This paper presents an efficiency enhancement for the balanced power amplifier using DBS(Dynamic Bias Switching) method which dynamically provides the power amplifier with two bias voltage levels according to the input envelope signal. In order to apply the dynamic biases to each side of the balanced power amplifier, two switching stages are adopted. Using an OFDM signal with a bandwidth of 20 MHz and a PAR(Peak to Average Ratio) of 8.5 dB, 6 % of PAE(Power-Added Efficiency) is improved at an output power of 42.5 dBm.

  • This paper proposes a leakage-suppressed SRAM with dynamic power saying scheme for the future leakage-dominant sub-70-nm technology. By dynamically controlling the common source-line voltage ($V_{SL}$) of sleep cells, the sub-threshold leakage through these sleep cells can be reduced to be 1/10-1/100 due to the reverse body-bias effect, dram-induced barrier lowering (DIBL) and negative $V_{GS}$ effects. Moreover, the bit-ling leakage which mar introduce a fault during the read operation can be completely eliminated in this new SRAM. The dynamic $V_{SL}$ control can also reduce the bit-line swing during the write so that the dynamic power in write can be reduced. This new SRAM was fabricated in 0.35-${\mu}m$ CMOS process and more than $30\%$ of dynamic power saying is experimentally verified in the measurement. The leakage suppression scheme is expected to be able to reduce more than $90\%$ of total SRAM power in the future leakage-dominant 70-nm process.

  • This paper describes a study of conventional electrical rig and simulated application of Flywheel Energy Storage system on the power system of the offshore plants with dynamic positioning system with the following aims: improve fuel consumption on engines, prevent blackout and mitigate voltage sags due to pulsed load and fault. Fuel consumption has been analyzed for the generators of the typical drilling rigs compared with the power plant with Flywheel Storage Unit which has an important aid in avoiding power interruption during DP (Dynamic Positioning) operation. The FES (Fly wheel Energy storage System) releases energy very quickly and efficiently to ensure continuity of the power supply to essential consumers such as auxiliary machinery and thrusters upon main power failure. It will run until the standby diesel generator can start and supply the electric power to the facilities to keep the vessel in correct position under DP operation. The proposed backup method to utilize the quick and large energy storage Flywheel system can be optimized in any power system design on offshore plant.

  • The Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) has installed an 80 MY A Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) at its 154㎸ 'Kang-Jin Substation in South Korea. The device, manufactured by Siemens & Hyusung, has been operational since October 2002. The Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI), a division of KEPCO was tasked to study operational strategies that could be employed for the UPFC and surrounding reactive support devices concerning problems of low voltages and overloads in the Mokpo & Gwangju areas. Particular apprehension surrounded the possibility of delay in the installation of a new 345㎸ transmission line from 2005 to beyond 2010. The studies were to specifically determine whether these problems could be eliminated by application of a UPFC. The analysis included determining the UPFC operating point under various conditions, investigations of the coordination between the UPFC and a HYDC line terminating in this area, and the design of a supplementary damping controller for the UFPC. This paper summarizes the results of those studies, demonstrating the dynamic characteristics of the operation of this UPFC operation in the Korean power system.

  • The purpose of this paper is to use hydraulic sources optimally on the hydro-thermal power coordination in power system of Korea by means of Multiple Dynamic Programming. Four principal hydraulic power plans of Korea; Whachon, Chunchon, Uiam and Chong-pyong which are located on Han river side are treated in this research. For the illustrative purpose, a case study was made on the year round monthy optimal water control under the given load distribution and constraints.

  • We employed various econometic methods to estimate the production index elasticity and the price elasticity of elecricity demand in Korea and compared the forecasting power of those methods. Cointegration models (ADL model, Engle-Granger model, Full Informtion Maximum Likelihood method by Johansen and Juselius) and Dynamic OLS by Stock and Watson were considered. The forecasting power test shows that Dynamic OLS has the best forecasting power. According to Dynamic OLS, the production index elasticity and the price elasticity of electricity demand in Korea are 0.13 and -0.40, respectively.

  • This paper describes controller development for a dynamic voltage compensator using a shunt diode converter and series inverter. The control system was designed using 1/4 period integrator and vector relationship between the supply voltage and load voltage. A simulation model and scaled hardware model were developed for analyzing performance of the controller and the whole system. Both results confirm that the dynamic compensator can restore the load voltage under the fault of the distribution system.
