  • Recently, the importance of rotordynamic stability has been increased because of the tendency to employ ultra-high speeds in rotating machinery. In particular, the dynamic characteristics of gas bearings for high-speed rotating machinery need to be identified at various excitation frequencies to predict the rotor's behavior. In this study, we perform dynamic loading tests for gas-foil bearings (GFBs) to determine the bump foil structure and an air-film combined bump-foil structure for varying excitation frequencies. We calculate the dynamic characteristics from the measured force and displacement data. The air film is generated by a pressurized air supply. Based on the results, the stiffness coefficients of the bump structure and the air-film combined bump structure increased, while the damping coefficients decreased at increasing excitation frequencies. Further, the stiffness and damping coefficients of the air-film combined structure show lower values than those of the bump structure. Consequently, we identify the frequency-dependent dynamic characteristics of the bump structure and the effect of gas film on the dynamic characteristics of GFBs. Furthermore, to reveal the effectiveness of the proposed method, we perform experiments and discuss two methods of extracting the dynamic characteristics from the measured data.

  • A free oscillation technique for obtaining the dynamic stability derivatives in yaw is applied to the pure yawing motion. The procedure of wind tunnel testing is to compute the derivatives after measuring deflecting angles of the model during the free oscillating motion. The charging compressed air is supplied for the initial excitation. The results of this experiment predicted feasible characteristics of the yawing motion, comparing with the data previously reported in the literature.

  • To provide model parameters for servo control system design, dynamic characteristics of a piezoelectric microactuator for hard disk drive(HDD) were investigated. At first frequency response characteristics was measured and a second order model was proposed. Here the amplitude dependent dynamic characteristics such as low frequency gain and damping ratio were studied. In addition, the load current and equivalent impedance of the piezoelectric actuator were measured by varying excitation voltage and frequency. At last, the super-harmonic resonance of the piezoelectric actuator was discussed.

  • This paper deals with the non-axisymmetric dynamic response of an imperfectly bonded buried orthotropic pipeline subjected to longitudinal wave (P-wave) excitation. An infinite cylindrical shell model, including the rotary inertia and shear deformation effects, has been used for the pipeline. For some cases comparison of axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric responses have also been furnished.

  • Recently the requirement of long-term mobile energy source for mobile robot or small-sized unmanned vehicle is highly increased, and the micro turbine generator(MTG) which is known to have high energy and power density is under development. MTG is designed to have air foil bearing and high speed rotor of which operating speed is 400,000rpm. In the development stage of high speed rotor and bearing, stability analysis for the full operational speed range is essential and the dynamic coefficients such as stiffness and damping coefficients of bearing depending on the rotational speed are required for that. Although perturbation method is usually used to identify the dynamic coefficients, it's not easy to give the perturbation to the high speed rotating rotor. In this study, we present the dynamic coefficients measurement system for air foil bearing which consists of electromagnets, gap sensors, high speed motor and controller. This measurement system can exert the sine sweep force to the rotor-bearing, measure the displacement of rotor and get FRF(Frequency response function) of rotor-bearing. The least square estimation method is applied to identify the dynamic coefficients of bearing from the measured frequency response at the different rpm and the identified dynamic coefficients for the wide rotational speed range are presented.

  • In this study, shaking table tests were conducted to estimate dynamic interface properties between geosynthetics such as geomembrane, geotextile and geosynthetic clay liner. Accelerations of both shaking table and upper box, and relative displacements between geosynthetics under dynamic loading were measured. Also, the influence of normal stress, frequency of excitation and dry/wet conditions were investigated through the analyses of test results. from the test results, it was found that there is a limited acceleration below which dynamic farce can be transmitted between geosynthetics without the loss of horizontal acceleration. Dynamic interface friction angle between geosynthetics could be calculated through the limited acceleration. Relative displacements induced along geosynthetic interfaces under dynamic loading were not consistent depending on the type of interface and test conditions. The maximum slip displacements between geosynthetics are normalized and normalized slip equations were developed for each interface. By using the normalized slip equation, maximum slip displacements for the geosynthetic interface could be predicted for the given base acceleration and frequency of excitation.

  • In order to investigate the dynamic characteristics of real structure, many dynamic engineer had been interested in modal test however it is not easy to perform dynamic test of large structure because of many difficulties such as unsatisfied excitation force in global mode frequency range, measurement of dynamic force and so on. Therefore. new type vibration exciter with variable stiffness support system and dynamic force was developed to provide a improved experimental environment for a large and complex structure. The developed exciter improved from two viewpoint, dynamic performance and utility convenience. its characteristics was shown in this paper.

  • The transient vibration test and synchronized human excitation is performed for low-rise concrete buildings and their identified natural frequency, damping ratio, and mode shape are compared. Form the identified dynamic parameters, it was found that the damping ratio obtained through the synchronized human excitation test is greater than those obtained from the transient vibration test. However, the mode shapes of the first mode are not significantly different regardless of the test method. Further, the stiffness of the interior brick partition considerably affect the stiffness of the entire building such that the first natural mode of rectangular shaped building occurred in the longitudinal direction rather than transverse direction.

  • Most dynamic systems have various random properties m excitation and system parameters. In this paper, a procedure for structural response and reliability analysis is proposed for the linear dynamic system with random properties in both excitation and system parameters. The system parameter and response with random properties are modeled by the perturbation technique, and then the response analysis is formulated by probabilistic and vibration theories. Probabilistic FEM is also used for the calculation of mean response which is difficult by the proposed response model. The first passage analysis by the integral equation method is used to analyze the probability of failure. The integral equation method results in the first passage probability in terms of crossing rates and first passage probability densities. In this study it is assumed that excitations, system parameters and responses are Gaussian. As an application example, the probabilities of failure at transient state are calculated for a sdof system with random mass and spring constant subjected to stationary white-noise excitation and the results are compared to those of numerical simulation.

  • In this study, the absorbing boundary condition was adopted to prevent elastic wave propagation due to abrupt load condition changes in moving force analysis. It was proven to be effective in reducing inappropriate noise components. Furthermore, to verify whether fixed point excitation in a laboratory test can simulate train movement effectively, the results of dynamic analysis for fixed point excitation and moving force conditions were analyzed. The dynamic stability of an asphalt track structure under a KTX train condition was also studied. Additionally, the dynamic safety of asphalt tracks was verified by comparing the results of a moving force analysis under a KTX train load and a quasi-static analysis under the design standard Korean train load.
