  • In high speed railway bridges, dynamic analysis is important because of high passing velocity and moving load at the regular intervals, and damping ratio is a major parameter to predict dynamic responses. In this paper, damping ratios were estimated by using half power band width method and extended Kalman filter according to acceleration signal conditions, and a relationship between estimated damping ratios and representative values of bridge vibration was derived. From the results, damping ratios estimated from total ambient vibration were more reliable than only free vibration part. In case of using extended Kalman filter, the estimated damping ratios varying with RMQ(root mean quad), as one of representative values of bridge vibration, have more feasible trend. Thus, it is shown that further studies on reliabilities of estimated damping ratios are needed.

  • This paper presents the vibrational characteristics of linear damped vibrational systems with a linear dynamic absorber. The amplitude ratios of main vibrational system are derived from the equation of motion for the system, and optimal natural frequency ratio and damping ratio of dynamic absorber are obtained by computer simu- lation, which minimize the amplitude ratio of main vibrational system for the whole range of the frequency ratio. And, the effects of the parameters on the amplitude ratios are investigated. As the results, the effect of the natural frequency ratio on the amplitude ratio of main vibrational system is more important than that of the damping ratio of dynamic absorber as damping ratio of main vibrational system becomes larger. For the case of large damping ration of main vibrational system becomes larger. For the case of large damping ratio of main vibration system, the amplitude ratios are not decreased dramationally in spite of inoreasing mass ratio.

  • This paper explores the possibility of using a combination of the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and the Hilbert transform (HT), termed the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) method, to identify the modal damping ratios of the structure with closely spaced modal frequencies. The principle of the HHT method and the procedure of using the HHT method for modal damping ratio identification are briefly introduced first. The dynamic response of a two-degrees-of-freedom (2DOF) system under an impact load is then computed for a wide range of dynamic properties from well-separated modal frequencies to very closely spaced modal frequencies. The natural frequencies and modal damping ratios identified by the HHT method are compared with the theoretical values and those identified using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) method. The results show that the HHT method is superior to the FFT method in the identification of modal damping ratios of the structure with closely spaced modes of vibration. Finally, a 36-storey shear building with a 4-storey light appendage, having closely spaced modal frequencies and subjected to an ambient ground motion, is analyzed. The modal damping ratios identified by the HHT method in conjunction with the random decrement technique (RDT) are much better than those obtained by the FFT method. The HHT method performing in the frequency-time domain seems to be a promising tool for system identification of civil engineering structures.

  • Steel plate concrete (SC) composite structure is now being recognized as a promising technology applicable to nuclear power plants as it is faster and suitable for modular construction. It is required to identify its dynamic characteristics prior to perform the seismic design of the SC structure. Particularly, the damping ratio of the structure is one of the critical design factors to control the dynamic response of structure. This paper compares the criteria for the damping ratios of each type of structures which are prescribed in the regulatory guide for the nuclear power plant. In order to identify the damping ratio of SC shear wall, this study made SC wall specimens and conducted experiments by cyclic lateral load tests and vibration tests with impact hammer. During the lateral loading test, SC wall specimens exhibited large ductile capacities with increasing amplitude of loading due to the confinement effects by the steel plate and the damping ratios increased until failure. The experimental results show that the damping ratios increased from about 6% to about 20% by increasing the load from the safe shutdown earthquake level to the ultimate strength level.

  • Structures consisting of concrete and steel parts, which are irregular in damping ratios are investigated. This investigation is a code-based seismic design of such structures. Several practical difficulties encountered, due to inherent differences in the nature of dynamic response of each part, and the different damping ratios of the two parts. These structures are irregular in damping ratios and have complex modes of vibration so that their analysis cannot be handled with the readily available commercial software. Therefore, this work aims to provide simple yet sufficiently accurate constant values of equivalent damping ratios applied to the whole structure for handling the damping irregularity of such structures. The results show that the equivalent damping ratio changes with the height of the building and the kind of the structural system, but it is constant for all accelerations values. Thus, available software SAP2000 applied for seismic analysis, design and the provisions of existing seismic codes. Finally, evaluation of different kinds of structural system used in this research to find the most energy dissipating one found by finding the best value of quality coefficient.

  • Input excitation and output response of structure are needed in conventional modal analysis methods. However, input excitation is often difficult to be obtained in the dynamic load test of bridge structures. Therefore, what attracts engineers' attention is how to get dynamic parameters from the output response. In this paper, a structural experimental modal analysis method is introduced, which can be used to conveniently obtain dynamic parameters of the structure from the free decay response. With known damping coefficients, this analysis method can be used to identify the natural frequencies and the mode shapes of MDOF structures. Based on the modal analysis theory, the mathematical relationship of damping ratio and frequency is obtained. By using this mathematical relationship to improve the previous method, an improved experimental modal analysis method is proposed in this paper. This improved method can overcome the deficiencies of the previous method, which can not identify damping ratios and requires damping coefficients in advance. Additionally, this improved method can also identify the natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios of the bridge only from the free decay response, and ensure the stability of identification process by using modern mathematical means. Finally, the feasibility and effectiveness of this method are demonstrated by a numerical example of a simply supported reinforced concrete beam.

  • In this paper, the effect of damping ratio on nonlinear dynamic analysis response and dynamic increase factor (DIF) in nonlinear static analysis of structures against column removal are investigated and a modified empirical DIF is presented. To this end, series of low and mid-rise moment frame structures with different span lengths and number of storeys are designed and the effect of damping ratio in DIF is investigated, performing several nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. For each damping ratio, a nonlinear dynamic analysis and a step by step nonlinear static analysis are carried out and the modified empirical DIF formulas are derived. The results of the analysis reveal that DIF is decreased with increasing damping ratio. Finally, an empirical formula is recommended that relates to damping ratio. Therefore, the new modified DIF can be used with nonlinear static analysis instead of nonlinear dynamic analysis to assess the progressive collapse potential of moment frame buildings with different damping ratios.

In this paper, damping ratios were estimated by two methods and vibration type sections, and relationship between estimated damping ratio and representative value of bridge vibration. At the results, estimated damping ratio using all time of vibration were more stable then using only free vibration section. And in the case of using extended Kalman filter, estimated damping ratio were trend of growth by growth of representative value of bridge vibration. At last, it was shown that study about reliabilities of estimated damping ratios were need.

  • Combustion stability margin of a model gas turbine has been assessed by utilizing damping ratios of measured dynamic pressure data. It is known that acoustic oscillations in combustion chambers can be described as a superposition of nonlinearly interacting oscillators. Based on this theoretical background, CSMA (Combustion Stability Margin Assessment) code has been developed. The code has been employed into a model gas turbine combustion experiment, focused on the combustion instability, to show its capability to determine the damping ratio of measured dynamic pressure and further to assess combustion stability margin of the experiment, and turned out that the code works well.

  • In this article, the dynamic parameters (frequencies, mode shapes, damping ratios) of the scaled concrete structure and the dynamic parameters (frequencies, mode shapes, damping ratios) of the entire outer surface of titanium dioxide, 80 micron in thickness are compared using operational modal analysis method. Ambient excitation was provided from micro tremor ambient vibration data on ground level. Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition (EFDD) was used for the output only modal identification. From this study, a good correlation between mode shapes was found. Titanium dioxide applied to the entire outer surface of the scaled concrete structure has an average of 11.78% difference in frequency values and 10.15% in damping ratios, proving that nanomaterials can be used to increase rigidity in structures, in other words, for reinforcement. Another important result determined in the study was the observation of the adherence of titanium dioxide and similar nanomaterials mentioned in the introduction to concrete structure surfaces was at the highest level.
