  • As the networked media technology have been grown in recent, there have been many research works to deliver high-quality video such as HDV and HDTV over the Internet. To realize high-quality media service over the Internet, however, the network adaptive streaming scheme is required to adopt to the dynamic fluctuation of underlying networks. In this paper, we design and implement the network-adaptive HD(high definition) MPEG-2 streaming system employing the frame-based prioritized packetization. Delivered video is inputted from the JVC HDV camera to the streaming sewer in real-time. It has a bit-rate of 19.2 Mbps and is multiplexed to the MPEG-2 TS (MPEG-2 MP@HL). For the monitoring of network status, the packet loss rate and the average jitter are measured by using parsing of RTP packet header in the streaming client and they are sent to the streaming server periodically The network adaptation manager in the streaming server estimates the current network status from feedback packets and adaptively adjusts the sending rate by frame dropping. For this, we propose the real-time parsing and the frame-based prioritized packetization of the TS packet. The proposed system is implemented in software and evaluated over the LAN testbed. The experimental results show that the proposed system can enhance the end-to-end QoS of HD video streaming over the best-effort network.

  • The simple procedural segment selection algorithm commonly used in Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) reveals severe weakness to provide high-quality streaming services in the integrated mobile networks of various wired and wireless links. A major issue could be how to properly cope with dynamically changing underlying network conditions. The key to meet it should be to make the segment selection algorithm much more adaptive to fluctuation of network traffics. This paper presents a system architecture that replaces the existing procedural segment selection algorithm with a deep reinforcement learning algorithm based on the Asynchronous Advantage Actor-Critic (A3C). The distributed A3C-based deep learning server is designed and implemented to allow multiple clients in different network conditions to stream videos simultaneously, collect learning data quickly, and learn asynchronously, resulting in greatly improved learning speed as the number of video clients increases. The performance analysis shows that the proposed algorithm outperforms both the conventional DASH algorithm and the Deep Q-Network algorithm in terms of the user's quality of experience and the speed of deep learning.

  • The rapid growth of technology for network and terminal devices is able to service multimedia contents in mobile environments. But as the environment of networks and the performance of devices is varied, the same quality service is very difficult to be provided for user in internet and mobile environment. Therefore, multimedia streaming system must provide an adaptive service in considering network and device environment. Video transcoding techniques are the good solution that can provide video streaming service in various network environments adaptively. This paper proposes a dynamic frame-skipping transcoding scheme to provide adaptive streaming service in various network environments. This scheme uses the prediction period for transcoding. A proposed transcoding scheme can reduce time complexity through combination of prediction period and skipping period to control frame-skipping rate in encoder. In simulation results, the performance of proposed scheme is similar to the performance of a traditional dynamic frame-skipping scheme in PSNR value. But the performance of proposed scheme outperforms the performance of traditional scheme in time complexity.

  • Point Cloud which is a cluster of numerous points can express 3D object beyond the 2D plane. Each point contains 3D coordinate and color data basically, reflectance or etc. additionally. Point Cloud demand research and development much higher effective compression technology. Video-based Point Cloud Compression (V-PCC) technology in development and standardization based on the established video codec. Despite its high effective compression technology, point cloud service will be limited by terminal spec and network conditions. 2D video had the same problems. To remedy this kind of problem, 2D video is using Scalable High efficiency Video Coding (SHVC), Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) or diverse technology. This paper proposed a density scalability method using SHVC codec in V-PCC.

  • Nowadays, Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) has become very popular in streaming multimedia contents. In DASH, a client estimates current network bandwidth and then determines an appropriate video quality with bitrate matching the estimated bandwidth. Thus, estimating accurately the available bandwidth is a significant premise in the quality of video streaming, especially when network traffic fluctuates substantially. To cope with this challenge, researchers have presented various filters to estimate network bandwidth adaptively. However, experiment results show that current schemes either adapt slowly to network changes or adapt fast but are very sensitive to delay jitter and produce sharply changed estimation. This paper presents a novel bandwidth estimation scheme based on Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD). We applied an MACD indicator and its two thresholds to classifying network states into stable state and agile state, based on the network state different filters are applied to estimate network bandwidth. In the paper, we studied the performance of various MACD indicators and the threshold values on bandwidth estimation. Then we used a DASH proxy-based environment to compare the performance of the presented scheme with current well-known schemes. The simulation results illustrate that the MACD-based bandwidth estimation scheme performs superior to existing schemes both in the speed of adaptively to network changes and in stability in bandwidth estimation.

  • UHD content is characterized by higher bandwidth requirements to provide seamless playback. The existing HTTP adaptive streaming scheme periodically requests video segment of lower quality than the available bandwidth in the steady state. In the steady state, the On-Off pattern is repeated due to the difference of the available bandwidth and the encoding rate of the content. And the repeated Off interval is causing the problem that can not efficiently use the available bandwidth. In the wireless environment where the delay and loss rate are higher with large bandwidth fluctuations, this problem is exacerbated because the available bandwidth is estimated inaccurately. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a segment scheduling scheme for efficient bandwidth utilization of UHD contents streaming in wireless environment. Proposed scheme is a group segment that simultaneously reqeusts multiple segments in one request message in order to reduce frequency of OFF interval. Through simulation, Our scheme improves bandwidth utilization.

  • Free viewpoint video (FVV) service is an immersive media service that allows a user to watch it from a desired location or viewpoint. It is composed of various forms according to the direction of the viewpoint of the provided video, and includes zoom in/out in the service. As consumers' demand for active watching is increasing, the importance of FVV services is expected to grow gradually. However, additional considerations are needed to seamlessly stream FVV service. FVV includes a plurality of videos, video changes may occur frequently due to movement of the viewpoint. Frequent occurrence of video switching or re-request another video can cause service delay and it also can lower user's quality of service (QoS). In this case, we assumed that if a video showing an object that the user wants to watch is selected and provided, it is highly likely to meet the needs of the viewer. In particular, it is important to provide an object-oriented FVV service when zooming in. When video zooming in in the usual way, it cannot be guaranteed to zoom in around the object. Zoom function does not consider about video viewing. It only considers the viewing screen size and it crop the video view as fixed screen location. To solve this problem, we propose a zoom in/out method of object-centered dynamic adaptive streaming of FVV in this paper. Through the method proposed in this paper, users can enjoy the optimal video service because they are provided with the desired object-based video.

  • Owing to the increase in consumption of multimedia content and the improvement of device capacity, user demand for high-quality content has increased. However, it is difficult to transport such large amounts of content over the existing broadcasting network with limited bandwidth. To provide high-definition broadcasting, some studies suggest methods of transporting multimedia over heterogeneous networks after encoding content hierarchically. MPEG Media Transport (MMT), standardized by Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), is a solution that enables large-volume media transport over heterogeneous networks such as digital broadcasting networks and packet-switched networks. In the case of delivering a scalable encoded video over different networks, synchronization of each stream is an important issue. MMT defines a synchronization scheme, but does not contain sufficient functions to implement it. In this paper, we propose a synchronization scheme for media streams that are encoded hierarchically, divided into layers, and transported over heterogeneous networks. We implement our scheme using MMT and HTTP, and experimented using three encapsulated video streams with different durations. As a result, we show that the proposed scheme can reduce the waiting time to display high-quality video, relative to Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP-Scalable Video Coding (DASH-SVC) by requesting segments of enhanced layers after calculating the transmission time. Additionally, we find out that the selection of durations have a relation to the characteristics of the video.

  • Currently, Scalable Video Coding (SVC) is being standardized. By using scalability of SVC, QoS managed video streaming service is enabled in heterogeneous networks even with only one original bitstream. But current SVC is insufficient to dynamic video conversion for the scalability, thereby the adaptation of bitrate to meet a fluctuating network condition is limited. In this paper, we propose dynamic full-scalability conversion method for QoS adaptive video streaming in H.264/AVC SVC. To accomplish full scalability dynamic conversion, we propose corresponding bitstream extraction, encoding and decoding schemes. On the encoder, we newly insert the IDR NAL to solve the problems of spatial scalability conversion. On the extractor, we analyze the SVC bitstream to get the information which enable dynamic extraction. By using this information, real time extraction is achieved. Finally, we develop the decoder so that it can manage changing bitrate to support real time full-scalability. The experimental results showed that dynamic full-scalability conversion was verified and it was necessary for time varying network condition.

  • Multimedia contents sharing services based on DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) technology such as Allshare or Smartshare in wireless home networks is widely adapted in Korea. However, the characteristics of the wireless network - frequently fluctuated bandwidth and signal strength could degrade the quality perceived by users. To minimize the impact of the challenge there are active researches in dynamic adaptive streaming. This paper proposes a dynamic adaptive streaming approach designed in a wireless network taking into account of the specifications of the user device such as resolution and processor. We modify the Kalman filter considering the characteristics of the device and demonstrate that the proposed approach determines Bit Rate using the modified filter.
