  • The dyeing characteristics of acorn was investigated. The natural Fabrics-cotton, rayon and silk-were dyed repeatedly in the solution extracted from acorn, CuSO4, K2Cr2O7 and brine were used as mordants to improve color fastness. Anti-bacterial property was measured in the dyed and mordant treated fabrics. When the cotton and rayon fabrics were dyed and treated with CuSO4, their colors showed very clear. They also had good color fastness and excellent anti-bacterial property. The dyed silk fabrics had better dye absorption property than the cotton and rayon fabrics without mordant treatment. But the fabrics dyed without mordant treatment had low light fastness. The cotton, rayon and silk fabrics dyed and treated with brine were dark and unclear. An aftertreatment with CuSO4 and K2Cr2O7 made the dyed fabrics darter and more clear.

  • This paper surveys the extraction condition of polygenetic natural dye, Sappan Wood and the effect of ash to the dyeability and fastness. The appropriate time for extracting Sappon Wood was 1hour. The pH was increased as the amount of ash increase. The pH was nearly invariable according to the time of ash solution, the extracting times and temperature. Absorbance of dyeing fabrics was about 480nm. From the result of K/S value determination of fabrics, 10g/$\ell$ quantity of ash was surfficient for treatment and the amount of Sappon Wood was in 100% o.w.f.. K/S value of fabrics pre-mordanted or post-mordanted were higher than that of fabrics simultaneous mordanted.K/S value was increased as pH of mordanting bath decrease and pre-mordanting and post-mordanting fabrics increased the amount of absorption (K/S value) compared with non-mordanted fabrics. It was found that pH of mordanting bath affected the amount of absorption and color change of dyed fabrics. Light fastness of fabric dyed was very poor and the fastness of fabric dyed was not influenced by the mordanting conditions and methods.

  • Silk fabrics were dyed with Gromwell extracts after mordanted with various mordants and their dyeability, antibacterial.deodorization activity, fastness and change of surface color were investigated. Silk fabrics were mordanted at $60^\circ{C}$ for 30 minutes and subsequently dyed at $40^\circ{C}$ for 30 minutes. The dye-uptake of silk fabrics increased with the concentration of Gromwell extracts and mordants. Surface color of silk fabrics changed differently according to the type of mordants used. Antibacterial and deodorization activities of silk fabrics dyed with Gromwell extracts were good. Cu mordant was more effective for deodorization activity. Dyed silk fabrics showed poor light fastness but good dry-cleaning and perspiration fastness.

  • In this research, the curly dock was used in the process of dyeing for fabrics of the inner wear & the patient wear. Since the curly dock has a pharmacological effect on dermatosis, this study focused on the variety of color and functions of the inner wear fabrics & patient wear fabrics to make the best use of the pharmacological effect of curly dock. With regards to giving a variety of colors and functions in the inner wear, patient wear fabrics, the curly dock dye was used in each treatment conditions on the cotton & silk fabrics. After dyeing, the dyeability, color change, light fastness, washing fastness, perspiration fastness, antibiosis, far infrared emissivity and emission power were evaluated. The evaluation results are as follows; The dyeablity increased from repeated dyeing and, by using the mordant, variety of colors such as skin, mustard, greyish-brown and dark earth colors were conformed to the naked eye. Fe mordant was better than Al on the lightfastness and the washing fastness. The repeated dyeing was found out to have less effect on neither lightfastness nor washing fastness. Both silk and cotton fabrics were graded $3{\sim}4$, since their degree of degradation appeared to be the same in alkali perspiration and acidic perspiration. In the case of silk fabrics mordanted by Al, the rate of declining in both Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 and Klebsiella pneumonia ATCC 4352 were 99.9%. In addition, the antibiosis was enhanced when the mordant was used. The far infrared was 86.6% of emissivity, $3.34{\times}10^2\;W/m^2{\cdot}{\mu}m$ emission power.

  • Five yellow disperse dyes were synthesized and their dyeing, fastness and photodegradation behaviors were investigated. It was found that dyes derived from phenylindole and N-alkylaminobenzene showed dye uptake directly proportional to the dye concentration, but the build-up of dyes derived from carbazole and pyridone were not good. The wavelength at maximum absorption. molar extinction coefficient. and the tendency to the photodegradation were strongly dependent on the electron donating ability of the coupling component. The dye, whose coupling component was phenylindole, possessed the excellent dyeing properties and the high degree of lightfastness. UVA had an effect on the inhibition of the photodegradation especially for the easily photodegradabte dyes.

  • The distributions of 3 disperse dyes with different molecular structures among polyurethane (PU) and polyester (PET) in dyeing PET-PU blend and which dye structure contaminated less PU portion were studied. The amounts of dyes left substrates after reduction clearing and washing were measured to prove which dye structure had an effect on improving washing fastness. Disperse dye with high molecular weight showed similar distribution onto PU and polyester by dying both substrates with similar rate and less contamination to polyurethane while other dyes distributed to PU faster than to PET had.

  • The berberine from Amur cork tree is natural yellow dye and can be extracted more easily by water. The berberine is basic dye and was extracted at 90-95$^{\circ}C$. We have obtained the following results; 1. K/S value in the abstract of dye was increased by time-elapsing, but the reasonable time was between 90-120min. 2. The reasonable weight of Amur cork tree in the abstract of dye was between 10-20 g/L. 3. We obtained various colors in case of using mordants. ―In case of 10g/L and 20g/l, the reasonable value of mordant was 5-10%(owf). and in case of using tannic acid and $FeSO_{4}$ we could obtain high K/S value. 4. &{\lambda}_{max}& of UV spectra was shown 420nm. 5. Genarally fastness of drycleaning indicated more than grade 4. but it of perspiration was more stable in acid than alkali.

  • Dyeing properties of rosemary colorants on cotton fabrics were investigated. Effect of dyeing conditions on dye uptake and effect of mordanting and cationizing on dye uptake, color change and colorfastness were explored. Also, antimicrobial activity of rosemary colorants was ascertained and further effect of cationizing on antimicrobial activity was investigated. Affinity of rosemary colorants to cotton fiber was considerably low, and its isotherm adsorption curve was Freundlich type, indicating that hydrogen bonding was involved in the adsorption of rosemary colorants to cotton fiber. The cotton fabrics showed generally high colorfastness except fastness to washing and light. The cationized cotton with Cationon UK(quarterly ammonium salt) showed higher dye uptake and shorter dyeing time, compared with the untreated cotton. The cationized cotton showed good colorfastness to washing, perspiration and rubbing. Antimicrobial activity of rosemary colorfastness was confirmed. The cationized cotton itself showed high bacterial reduction rate. For cationized and dyed samples, as dye uptake increased, bacterial reduction rate was decreased slightly.

  • In this study, eco-friendly natural dyeing for pig leather was explored by using onion skin which is food waste. Sodium caseinate was used as a pre-treatment agent to improve dyeability of pig leather and its effect on dye uptake was investigated according to treatment concentration. Dye uptake of the pre-treated pig leather was increased by about two times compared to untreated one at 0.2% pre-treatment concentration. Onion skin colorant imparted YR color on pig leather. After mordanting, the color of pretreated/dyed pig leather was varied from brick-red to khaki shades. However, mordanting did not improved dye uptake of the pre-treated/dyed pig leather significantly. The color-fastnesses of un-mordanted samples to light, dry cleaning, rubbing were grades 3-4, 5, and 4, respectively, which is good enough to meet all Korean Standard for Fastness of leather products. After mordanting, the light fastness of pig leather was improved to 4, 4-5 grade. The efficacy of sodium caseinate as a pre-treatment agent for pig leather was verified by improved dye uptake and good colorfastness. And, the natural dyeing of pig leather using food waste would be a significant sustainable way in terms of eco-friendliness and reuse of biomass to reduce environmental pollution.
