  • Since wireless sensor networks generally have the capability of network recovery, malfunction of a few sensor nodes in a sensor network does not cause a crucial problem paralyzing the sensor network. The malfunction of the sink node, however, is critical. If the sink node of a sensor network stops working, the data collected by sensor nodes cannot be delivered to the gateway because no other sensor nodes can take the place of the sink node. This paper proposes a TDMA-based wireless sensor network equipped with dual sink nodes, with a view to preventing data loss in the case of malfunction of a sink node. A secondary sink node, which synchronizes with a primary sink node and receives data from other sensor nodes in normal situations, takes the role of the primary sink node in the case of malfunction of the primary sink, thereby eliminating the possibility of data loss. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is demonstrated through experiments.

  • Energy conservation is a vital issue in wireless sensor networks. Recently, employing mobile sinks for data gathering become a pervasive trend to deal with this problem. The sink can follow stochastic or pre-defined paths; however the controlled mobility pattern nowadays is taken more into consideration. In this method, the sink moves across the network autonomously and changes its position based on the energy factors. Although the sink mobility would reduce nodes' energy consumption and enhance the network lifetime, the overhead caused by topological changes could waste unnecessary power through the sensor field. In this paper, we proposed EEDARS, an energy-efficient dual-sink algorithm with role switching mechanism which utilizes both static and mobile sinks. The static sink is engaged to avoid any periodic flooding for sink localization, while the mobile sink adaptively moves towards the event region for data collection. Furthermore, a role switching mechanism is applied to the protocol in order to send the nearest sink to the recent event area, hence shorten the path. This algorithm could be employed in event-driven and multi-hop scenarios. Analytical model and extensive simulation results for EEDARS demonstrate a significant improvement on the network metrics especially the lifetime, the load and the end-to-end delay.

  • Floor panel heating system using hot water is the primary heating system of domestic residential building. This paper presents the results of performance analysis of the heat pump system with air source evaporator and single unit dual sink(SUDSk) condenser. The heat exchanger combines two separated condensers into a single condenser and the object of the SUDSk condenser is to release energy to dual sinks, i.e. air for air heating system and water for panel heating system in one single unit. Simulation program is developed for single unit dual source(SUDS) SUDSk heat pump system and some experimental data are obtained and compared with simulation results. Differences of heating capacity and COP in dual source operating mode are 7% and 8% respectively. Simulation results are in good agreement with test results. Therefore, developed program is effectively used for design and performance prediction of dual source dual sink heat pump system with SUDS evaporator and SUDSk condenser.

  • Data collection is a key function for wireless sensor networks. There has been numerous data collection scheduling algorithms, but they fail to consider the deep and complex relationship among network lifetime, sink aggregated information and sample cycle for wireless sensor networks. This paper gives the upper bound on the sample period under the given network topology. An optimal schedule algorithm focusing on aggregated information named OSFAI is proposed. In the schedule algorithm, the nodes in hotspots would hold on transmission and accumulate their data before sending them to sink at once. This could realize the dual goals of improving the network lifetime and increasing the amount of information aggregated to sink. We formulate the optimization problem as to achieve trade-off among sample cycle, sink aggregated information and network lifetime by controlling the sample cycle. The results of simulation on the random generated wireless sensor networks show that when choosing the optimized sample cycle, the sink aggregated information quantity can be increased by 30.5%, and the network lifetime can be increased by 27.78%.

  • This study aims for the research of the local circulation in a kitchen to minimize the kitchen work load and to produce a more efficient kitchen system. This study analized the real behavior and circulation in the kitchen area and this focused on the kitchen of the working women in a dual-income family. Through the analisis, this study raised an idea that the work in the kitchen area is not in sequence, but random while the tradition idea of the kitchen system is arranged by cooking programe. Therefore, this became a reason to increase the kitchen work load ratter than the layout of the kitchen system, the cooking style and menu affected on the more kitchen load. To reduce the kitchen work load, the designeer should shorten the circulation in the kitchen area. And this is possible through the decrease distance between the sink and a kiting zone and through the wide kitchen table which is between the sink and a kiting zone.

  • This paper presents a new algorithm for the K shortest paths Problem which develops initial K shortest paths, and repeat to expose hidden shortest paths with dual approach and to replace the longest path in the present K paths. The initial solution comprises K shortest paths among shortest paths to traverse each arc in a Double Shortest Arborescence which is made from bidirectional Dijkstra algorithm. When a crossing node that have two or more inward arcs is found at least three time by turns in this K shortest paths, there may be some hidden paths which are shorter than present k-th path. To expose a hidden shortest path, one inward arc of this crossing node is chose by means of minimum detouring distance calculated with dual variables, and then the hidden shortest path is exposed with joining a detouring subpath from source to this inward arc and a spur of a feasible path from this crossing node to sink. If this exposed path is shorter than the k-th path, the exposed path replaces the k-th path. This algorithm requires worst case time complexity of O(Kn$^2$), and O(n$^2$) in the case k$\leq$3.

  • This paper presents a clock and data recovery circuit that supports dual data rates of 5.4 Gbps and 3.24 Gbps for DisplayPort v1.2 sink device. A quarter-rate linear phase detector (PD) is used in order to mitigate high speed circuit design effort. The proposed linear PD results in better jitter performance by increasing up and down pulse widths of the PD and removes dead-zone problem of charge pump circuit. A voltage-controlled oscillator is designed with a 'Mode' switching control for frequency selection. The measured RMS jitter of recovered clock signal is 2.92 ps, and the peak-to-peak jitter is 24.89 ps under $2^{31}-1$ bit-long pseudo-random bit sequence at the bitrate of 5.4 Gbps. The chip area is 1.0 mm${\times}$1.3 mm, and the power consumption is 117 mW from a 1.8 V supply using 0.18 ${\mu}m$ CMOS process.

  • In discharge machining, material is removed by electrical discharge between the electrode and the workpiece. An important consideration in EDM is that the wear of the electrodes decreases the final precision of the workpiece. The edge wear of the electrodes proceeds very quickly because sparks occur more frequently at the edges with high local electrical strength. In this study, mold steel was discharged with a wedge-shaped graphite electrode to measure the edge wear of the electrode according to the depth. The electrode edge wear increased with depth during EDM and a wear model was developed. The model predicted that the edge wear can be reduced by approximately 70% using two electrodes instead of a single electrode. The model was supported by the experimental comparison of the dual electrode method and the single electrode method.
