Effect of Dry Heating on the Pasting/retrogradation and Textural Properties of Starch-soy Protein Mixture (건조가열이 전분과 콩단백질 혼합물의 호화 및 노화특성과 조직감에 미치는 영향)

  • Effects of dry heating and pH on pasting, thermal, and textural properties of corn starch containing soy protein isolate (SPI) were investigated. Samples were prepared by drying corn starch dispersions containing 3% SPI at $40^{\circ}C$ (unheated sample) or additionally heating dried mixtures at $130^{\circ}C$ (heated sample). Pasting properties of starch samples and textural properties of starch gels were measured using Rapid Visco-Analyzer (RVA) and Texture Analyzer (TA), respectively. Effects of SPI addition and dry heating on retrogradation and microstructure of gel samples were investigated using DSC and SEM, respectively. Pasting viscosity of dry-heated samples was significantly higher than that of unheated samples, and at pH 8 compared to pH 6. Dry-heat treatment decreased fracture stress and strain of starch gels containing SPI. No significant effects of dry-heat treatment and pH were observed on retrogradation of starch gels. Addition of SPI retarded starch retrogradation and modified starch gel properties with increased nutritional value. Dry-heat treatment with SPI could be possible method for starch modification.

Quality characteristics and preparing of solid starter using fungal strains for Takju (탁주용 곰팡이 고체종국 제조 및 품질 특성)

  • In this study, we investigated the effect of fermentation conditions on the amylolytic and proteolytic activities of Aspergillus luchuensis strain 74-5 and Aspergillus oryzae strain 75-2, which are used in the preparation of the starter culture, for Takju (Korean traditional rice wine). The starter culture was optimized using different conditions, such as inoculum size, inoculation temperature, and incubation time. The enzyme activities under each condition were measured. In the A. luchuensis strain 74-5 starter culture, the ${\alpha}-amylase$ and glucoamylase activities increased, however the activity of acidic protease decreased as the diluent to starter culture ratio increased. In the A. oryzae 75-2 starter culture, all enzyme activities were maintained at a higher level even at 5% inoculation ratio. Higher enzyme activities were observed in the middle range of inoculation temperature (35, $40^{\circ}C$), than in the lower range (20, $30^{\circ}C$). Enzyme activity in the starter culture varied with incubation time, however it was the highest at 144 and 120 hr, respectively, for A. luchuensis strain 74-5 and A. oryzae strain 75-2. The spore count of the starter culture was approximately $2{\times}10^7$ during fermentation, out of which contamination by aerobic bacteria was about $3{\times}10^3$. The results suggested that the starter culture of each strain could be used as an inoculum for fermentation. However, we needs to conduct further research for the selection of suitable diluting agents as well as drying methods to reduce the contamination by aerobic bacteria, while retaining the enzyme activity.

Shrinkage Properties of High Performance Concrete Depending on Specimen Size and Constraint of Reinforcing Bar (공시체 크기 변화 및 철근구속에 따른 고성능콘크리트의 수축 특성)

  • This paper reports the test results for shrinkage properties of low shrinkage high performance concrete developed by the authors depending on specimen size and constraint of reinforcing bar. As properties in fresh concrete low shrinkage high performance concrete(LSHPC) combined with expansive additives and shrinkage reducing admixture resulted in increase SP dosage due to loss of fluidity compared with that of control mixture concrete, while the dosage of AE agent was decreased. LSHPC exhibited higher compressive and tensile strength than control mixture concrete. For the effect of specimen size, an increase in specimen size led to a reduction of drying shrinkage. However, it was found that the autogenous shrinkage was not affected by the specimen size and measuring method. For constraint condition, an increase in the ratio of reinforcing bar caused the slight reduction in the strain of reinforcing bar, while it increased the autogenous shrinkage stress. It was seen that LSHPC was effective to reduce autogenous shrinkage by as much as 70% compared with control mixture high performance concrete.

  • Recently, ultra high performance fiber reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) having over 180 MPa compressive strength and 10 MPa tensile strength has been developed in Korea. However, UHPFRC represents different material properties with normal concrete (NC) and conventional high performance concrete (HPC) such as a high early age autogenous shrinkage and a rapid dry on the surface, because it has a low water-binder ratio and high fineness admixtures without coarse aggregate. In this study, therefore, to propose suitable experimental methods and regulations, and to evaluate mechanical properties at a very early age for UHPFRC, setting, shrinkage and tensile tests were performed. From the setting test results, paraffin oil was an appropriate material to prevent drying effect on the surface, because if paraffin oil is applied on the surface, it can efficiently prevent the drying effect and does not disturb or catalyze the hydration of cement. From the ring-test results, it was defined that the shrinkage stress is generated at the time when the graph tendency of temperature and strain of inner steel ring is changed. By comparing with setting test result, the shrinkage stress was firstly occurred as the penetration resistance of 1.5 MPa was obtained, and it was about 0.6 and 2.1 hour faster than those of initial and final sets. So, the starting time of autogenous shrinkage measurement (time-zero) of UHPFRC was determined when the penetration resistance of 1.5 MPa was obtained. Finally, the tensile strength and elastic modulus of UHPFRC were measured from near initial setting time by using a very early age tensile test apparatus, and the prediction models for tensile strength and elastic modulus were proposed.

A Study of Characteristics Change of Low-Shrinkage Normal Strength Concrete According to Mixing Factors and curing Temperature (배합요인과 양생온도에 따른 일반강도 초저수축 콘크리트의 특성 변화 연구)

  • This study examined the effects of the coarse aggregate maximum size and grading of fine aggregates to acquire the characteristics of very low shrinkage on normal strength concrete mixed in the field. In addition, the shrinkage characteristics of concrete under construction were evaluated in accordance with the curing temperature. The compressive strength and drying shrinkage tests were performed for nine mixing factors composed of the coarse aggregate size (13, 20, and 25 mm), types of fine aggregate (see sand, crushed sand, and blended sand), and curing temperatures (5, 20, and $35^{\circ}C$). To acquire low shrinkage properties under $350{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ strain on normal strength concrete, a 25 mm maximum of coarse aggregate was available, and the grading of fine aggregate affected the shrinkage of concrete. In addition, very low shrinkage properties were acquired in the curing temperature range except cold and hot weather concrete.

Long-Term Performance Evaluation of Concrete Utilizing Oyster Shell in Lieu of Fine Aggregate (굴패각을 잔골재로 대체 사용한 콘크리트의 장기성능 평가)

  • To evaluate the practical application of oyster shells(OS) as construction materials, an experimental study was performed. More specifically, the long-term mechanical properties and durability of concrete blended with oyster shells were investigated. Test results indicate that long-term strength of concrete blended with 10% oyster shells is almost identical to that of normal concrete. However, the long-term strength of concrete blended with 20% oyster shells is appreciably lower than that of normal concrete. Thereby, concrete with higher oyster shell blend has the possibility of negatively influencing the concrete long-term strength. Elastic modulus of concrete blended with crushed oyster shells decreases as the blending mixture rate increases. Namely, the modulus is reduced to approximately 10∼15% when oyster shells are blended up to 20% as the fine aggregate. The drying shrinkage strain increases with an increasing crushed oyster shells substitution rate. In addition, the existing model code of drying shrinkage and creep do not coincide with the test results of this study. An adequate prediction equation needs to be developed. The utilization of oyster shells as the fine aggregate in concrete has an insignificant effect on fleering and thawing resistance, carbonation and chemical attack of concrete. However, water permeability is considerably improved.

An analytical Study for the Development of Highly Elastic Material applicable for Joint in Modular Pavement (모듈러 포장에 적용가능한 고탄성 연결재료 개발을 위한 해석적 연구)

  • This study was intended to estimate the axial deformation of joint between pavement modules in the rapid-constructible modular pavement system, and to investigate the applicability of two-phase composites for a joint material, which was composed of cement paste, epoxy, or polyurethane as a matrix and sand as particles. A case which had supports under the pavement module as well as a case which the module was put on roadbed directly were considered in FEM analysis for the axial deformation. The effect of self-weight, live load, thermal change, and drying shrinkage were estimated and the thermal change was found to cause the largest deformation compared to the others. Deformation capacity of two-phase composites was predicted using the modified shear-lag model. In the analytical results for the elastic modulus and maximum tensile strain with different volume fractions of sand, 20~30 % replacement of sand was revealed to satisfy the required strain capacity with economy when if the width of joint was designed to be 15~20 mm.

The Jung-Sa(正邪) of the Excessive Liver-Symptoms belongs to the eleven symptoms, there are blue face, blue thin fingernail, anger, fancy of larg body, dizziness, eye flame, Bell's palsy, hard swelling pain at braest, side pain going on the belly from the side, side pain and movement at the left side. 2. The Mi-Sa(微邪) of the Excessive Liver-Symptoms belongs to the four symptoms, there are meat in eye, edema in cheek, lack of appetite and diarrhea. 3. The Juk-Sa(賊邪) of the Excessive Liver-Symptoms belongs to the only one symptom, this is nosebleeding. 4. The Hu-Sa(虛邪) of the Excessive Liver-Symptoms belongs to the three symptoms, there are scrotum constraction, strain in belly and constipation. 5. The Sil-Sa(實邪) of the Excessive Liver-Symptoms belongs to the twenty eight symptoms, there are red eye, raised eyes(兩眼上?), spitting blood, sternocostal turgid pain, turgidity in belly, drooping testis, vomiting water acid, sickening, belching, confusion, impatience, frequent forgetfulness, headache, giddness, eye pain, deaf, ringing in the ear, feeling inverse, drying mouth, stuffiness sensation in the chest, chest pain, stuffiness sensation in the belly, bellyache, quadriplegia, spasm of extremities, tremor, alternate spells of fever and chills, high fever and strain in muscle. 6. Those symptoms, Red corner of the eye, red face, swelling on the forehead, stiff-neck and back strong, opisthotonos, constracture of the limbs, vomiting yellow bitter water, speech impediment, epilepsy, depression, strong tongue, different thing in throat, fullness and distention of the gastric region, feeling sick and tenesmus, have no connected with the Excessive Liver-Symptoms(肝實證) 7. The Excessive Liver-Symptoms(肝實證) is connected with the ganjabyoung(肝自病) and Hwa(火) which the pathology is, than because Mock(木) is excessive and Mock-Saeng-Hwa(木生火), the ganjabyoung(肝自病) and Sil-Sa(實邪) are many. 8. There are the sixteen symptoms with the exception of The Excessive Liver-Symptoms(肝實證), because supposed that the scholars in medicine included the union syndroms(合病), the combine syndroms(兼病) and the analysis of symptoms(辨證) in The Analysis of Five Visceral Symptoms. 9. During consideration of the symptoms at the above statements, where are many causes by Gan-Pung(肝風), there is difficult of distinction between the excessive Liver-Symptoms(肝實證) and C.V.A(Cerebral Vascular Attack). Because than NaeKyung(內經) distinguished between the excessive Liver-Symptoms(肝實證) and C.V.A., the future medical specialists connected with the excessive Liver-Symptoms(肝實證) and C.V.A.. 10. An appearance of Sang-Hwa(相火) that the liver possessed is divided into an appearance of Hwa(火), there will be making a study att the more necessary. 11. The cuases of each syndroms are consist of the origins of syndroms, its pathology and the positions where the syndroms appeared, I consider that is the various ways how judge the syndroms except the Five Pathogenic Factors(五邪). 12. If more than study will be achieved in all, the new definition will be standed about the Excessive and Deficient Five Visceral Syndroms(五臟虛實證), I consider this will be the foundation data that study the Oriental Medicine and the important data that is a judgement standard of clininc.

Geotechnical shear behavior of Xanthan Gum biopolymer treated sand from direct shear testing

  • Conventional geotechnical engineering soil binders such as ordinary cement or lime have environmental issues in terms of sustainable development. Thus, environmentally friendly materials have attracted considerable interest in modern geotechnical engineering. Microbial biopolymers are being actively developed in order to improve geotechnical engineering properties such as aggregate stability, strength, and hydraulic conductivity of various soil types. This study evaluates the geotechnical engineering shear behavior of sand treated with xanthan gum biopolymer through laboratory direct shear testing. Xanthan gum-sand mixtures with various xanthan gum content (percent to the mass of sand) and gel phases (initial, dried, and re-submerged) were considered. Xanthan gum content of 1.0% sufficiently improves the inter-particle cohesion of cohesionless sands 3.8 times and more (up to 14 times for dried state) than in the untreated (natural) condition, regardless of the xanthan gum gel condition. In general, the strength of xanthan gum-treated sand shows dependency with the rheology and phase of xanthan gum gels in inter-granular pores, which decreases in order as dried (biofilm state), initial (uniform hydrogel), and re-submerged (swollen hydrogel after drying) states. As xanthan gum hydrogels are pseudo-plastic, both inter-particle friction angle and cohesion of xanthan gum-treated sand decrease with water adsorbed swelling at large strain levels. However, for 2% xanthan gum-treated sands, the re-submerged state shows a higher strength than the initial state due to the gradual and non-uniform swelling behavior of highly concentrated biofilms.

Nonlinear Analysis of RC Members Using Truss Model (트러스 모델을 이용한 철근콘크리트 부재의 비선형해석)

  • Conventional nonlinear finite element analysis requires complicated modeling and analytical technique. Furthermore, it is difficult to interpret the analytical results presented as the stress-strain relationship. In the present study, a design-oriented analytical method using the truss model was developed. A reinforced concrete member to be analyzed was idealized by longitudinal, transverse, and diagonal line elements. Basically, each element was modeled as a composite element of concrete and re-bars. Simplified cyclic models for the concrete and re-bar elements were developed. RC beams and walls with various reinforcement details were analyzed by the proposed method. The inelastic strength, energy dissipation capacity, deformability, and failure mode predicted by the proposed method were compared with those of existing experiments. The results showed that the proposed model accurately predicted the strength and energy dissipation capacities, and to predict deformability of the members, the compression-softening model used for the concrete strut element must be improved.
