  • This study was performed to evaluate the effect of drying methods on the polyphenol contents and antioxidant activities of Hizikia fusiformis. The seaweed was dried using four different conditions: vacuum drying (VD) at $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$ and hot-air drying (HD) at $40^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$. After drying, the total phenol content, DPPH and nitrite scavenging activities of the water extracts were determined. The total phenol contents were significantly (p<0.05) higher in the vacuum dried samples than the hot-air dried samples. DPPH radical was scavenged 82.67% and 83.45% by VD-20 and VD-30, and 70.44% and 71.23% by HD-40 and HD-60, respectively. At pH 1.2, Hizikia fusiformis scavenged 87.43%, 88.45%, 72.14% and 73.45% of nitrite by the treatment VD-20, VD-30, HD-40 and HD-60, respectively. Interestingly, the nitrite scavenging activity was much more reduced at pH 3.0 than at pH 1.2. Through these experiments, we were able to show that the drying conditions affect the total phenol contents and antioxidant capacities of Hizikia fusiformis.

  • Near Infrared Ray (NIR) are primarily of interest to the high energy physicist. It is the intermediate portion of the spectrum, which extends from approximately 0.8 to 1.5 ${\mu}m$ and include a portion of the all of infrared, that is thermal radiation and is pertinent to heat transfer. It is important to study that temperature distribution of the drying materials by surface encompasses a range of NIR wave lengths. This study is to investigate the characteristics of NIR dryer by experimental results. it was made a comparison with various textiles, velocity ratio and distance of lamp and textiles. In case of spongy type textile the drying performance is the superior of all. The 0.15m distance drying effect of improvement 30% more than 0.26m distance between lamp and textiles. As the contained water increases, the drying speed for textile can be increased.

  • A fast dissolving tablet was developed using the freeze-drying technique. Hyeonggaeyeongyotang was selected as a model oriental medicine. Formulation and processing parameters were studied to obtain freeze-dried tablet with high drug loading, good palatability, and fast disintegration time. $Kollidon^{(R)}$ CLM served as both matrix former and taste masking agent. Ethanol used as co-solvent, decreased the disintegration time of tablet. Aspartame was employed to impart better taste. Drying condition was found to have a major effect in the morphology of the tablets. Freeze-drying process was optimized to decrease the processing time and improve the appearance of the tablets.

  • Six pesticides were determined in hot pepper leaves after successive processing steps of washing, blanching, and drying. The tested pesticides included dichlofluanid, flusilazole, folpet, iprodione, ${\lambda}$-cyhalothrin, and lufenuron. Each pesticide was singly applied to the leaves of the pepper plants, which were being cultivated in a greenhouse. The processing factors were dependent on the type of pesticide, and were in the following ranges: 0.09-0.73 by washing, <0.00-0.48 after blanching, and <0.00-3.30 after drying. Only lufenuron showed a processing factor of more than 1, at 3.30 in dried leaves, while the processing factors of the other pesticides were less than 1. The removal ratios of the tested pesticides by washing ranged from 27 to 90%. The blanching step increased their removals by 10-25%. However, drying did not have an effect on residue reduction. Finally, after proceeding to the drying step, removal ratios ranged from 85 to 100%, with the exception of lufenuron at 47%.

  • The effect of surfactants with different chain length on the drying dynamics of nanosized dispersion droplets and on the final morphology of the grains formed after water evaporation is investigated experimentally. An acoustic levitator was used to examine the drying dynamics of single droplets and SEM imaging was used to characterise the morphology of the final dried grains. Results show that the drying of drops with high molecular weight surfactants leads to more irregular grains and that the grain morphology is related to surface tension driven instability of the evaporating droplets which may lead to formation of hollow dried grains.

  • The drying test was carried on the globular type cow manure pellet for use in solid fuel applications. The globular type cow manure pellet fuel was sorted according to size by rotatory sieves. The three kind of drying methods such as convection hot-air drying method, infrared ray drying method and superheated steam method were used to dry the globular type cow manure pellet. Among the three kind of drying methods, superheated steam method of dry time was the shortest. The apparent specific gravity and low calorific value of dried cow manure pelltes was about $250{\sim}350kg/m^3$ and above 3,000 kcal/kg respectively. The smaller the particle size of cow manure pellets, the less drying time was required. The time was required very less for drying smaller particle size cow manure pellet when compared to larger size. In the case of the same drying condition, it has been found that reducing the particle size of cow manure fuel pellet is an important factor for shortening the drying time of the livestock manure pellet.

  • Dried raddish leaves were prepared by using three different pre-treatment methods (shady sun-drying, freezing after blanching, and shady sun-drying after blanching). Then, the retention of minerals in dried raddish leaves was determined. It was shown that the retention of most minerals (Na, K, Fe, Ca, Mg) except P was higher when shady sun-drying method was used. The retention of P was shown to be the lowest when freezing after blanching method was used.

  • The effect of freeze drying and fixatives in post-treating freeze drying on the morphological properties of the rose (Rosa hybrida L.) petal were investigated for the production of high quality of freeze dried rose. The morphology including form and color of the dried flowers of cut rose were depended on the drying methods. The drying time was extended due to their density and water content, and was shorter in the freeze drying than that in the natural and hot air drying. Freeze dried process for dried flowers took 2 days in a freeze dryer and did not cause shrinkage or toughening of rose petal being dried, preserving its natural shape and color. The diameter of freeze dried flowers showed little reduction compared to fresh flowers. In Hunter color values of petals of freeze dried flowers, L and a values were high and showed little variations in comparison to fresh petals. Freeze drying led to a noticeable increase in anthocyanin contents in petals, suggesting that anthocyanin contents play an important role in the acquisition of freezing tolerance. Exposure of flowers to freeze drying was accompanied by an increase in the carotenoid content. In the post-treating freeze drying, epoxy resin, a fixative, applied alone or in combination to petals of freeze dried flowers showed efficient coating for the protection from humidity and sunlight. Combined application of epoxy and acetone to freeze dried petals permitted maintenance of natural color and excellent tissue morphology, showing color stability and shiny texture in surface of petals. These findings suggest that application of fixatives to freeze dried rose petals improves the floral preservation and epoxy coating provides good quality in the freeze dried flower product.

  • A field experiment was carried out to determine the effects of chemical drying agents at mowing on the field drying rate of alfalfa (cv. Vernal) and rye (cv. Koolgrazer) for hastening hay manuf8cture. In alfalfa; chemicals ($K_2CO_3$ 2% $K_2CO_3$ 3% $Na_2CO_3$ 2% $CaCO_3$, 2% $K_2CO_3$2% + $Na_2CO_3$, 1% only water spray and control) were treated at early bloom stage in 1995. Chemicals ($K_2CO_3$, 2%, $Na_2CO_3$, 2% $CaCO_3$, 2% and control) were applicated at different harvest stages (early heading, heading and bloom) in rye, 1996. The drying rate of alfalfa by $K_2CO_3$ treatment among chemicals was higher than control, and the duration of field dry was shortened by one day with $K_2CO_3$ application, but there was no difference in drying efficiency between $K_2CO_3$ 2% and $K_2CO_3$ 3%. In rye, however, no moisture reduction by chemicals was observed. The days required for field dry were 6, 4, and 3 days at warly heading heading and bloom stage respectively; regardless of chemical drying agents and conbol. The nutritive value of rye hay with chemicals at baling was very slightly higher than control, but there was no significant difference. Also, no difference of hay quality was found among drying agents. In conclusion, $K_2CO_3$can enhance the field drying rate of alfalfa hay, but the drying efficiency was not high, particularly in rye hay. Harvesting at early heading to heading stage was desirable for manufacture of high quality rye hay.
