Characterization of Expanded Tobacco Lamina Tissues by Freeze Drying (냉동건조에 의한 잎담배 팽화특성)

  • The freeze drying rate was investigated under various conditions such as pressure and moisture contents in order to establish the optimum condition for expansion of the culled flue cured tobacco lamina. The optimal pressure in the chamber to maintain the heat and mass transfer was about 0.8torr, When the moisture contents of sample was 50-60%, expanding rate was the optimum condition and the rate was 67-76%. As the thickness of the sample layers was increased, drying-rate was decreased conversely and this result seemed to be due to decline of heat and mass transfer coefficients. Differences with the position of its stalk were also observed in drying rate, and low stalk position leaves of 5 and 3 was the fastest. Key words : freeze drying, Popping, expansion tobacco.

Drying characteristics and quality of red ginseng using far-infrared rays

  • Background: The current typical drying methods for red ginseng are sun drying and hot-air drying. The purpose of this study was to investigate drying characteristics of red ginseng by using far-infrared drying. Methods: The far-infrared drying tests on red ginseng were conducted at two drying stages: (1) high temperature for 24 h drying and (2) low temperature drying until the final moisture content was $13{\pm}0.5%$ (wet basis). The high temperature drying stage included three drying chamber temperature conditions of $60^{\circ}C$, $65^{\circ}C$, and $70^{\circ}C$. The low temperature drying stage was conducted at temperatures of $45^{\circ}C$ and $50^{\circ}C$. Drying characteristics were analyzed based on factors such as drying rate, color changes, energy consumption, and saponin content. The results were compared with those of the hot-air and sun drying methods. Results: The results revealed that increases in drying temperature caused a decrease in drying time and energy consumption for far-infrared drying. The saponin content decreased under all drying conditions after drying, the highest value (11.34 mg/g) was observed at drying conditions of $60{\sim}50^{\circ}C$. The sun drying condition showed the lowest color difference value when compared with far-infrared and hot-air drying. Conclusion: The far-infrared drying showed a faster drying rate, higher saponin content, lower color difference value, and a decrease in energy consumption than seen in hot-air drying.

  • Drying Shrinkage has much complexity as it has relations with both internal elements of concrete and external factors. Therefore, experiments on Concrete Drying Shrinkage are carried out in this study under simplified circumstances applying temperature & Humidity test chamber which enables constant temperature and humidify. Comparative analyses have been made respectively according to the consequences aiming at modelling for prediction of Concrete Drying Shrinkage and making out measures to reduce it. As a result Strain Rate of Drying Shrinkage of concrete was measured to increase by average $10{\times}10^{-5}$ in proportion to additional 4% increase in fine aggregate ratio, when water/cement ratio constant. Strain Rate of Drying Shrinkage in pit sand concrete increased 20% higher than measured when in river sand under the condition of 90-day material age. 6. Strain Rate of Drying Shrinkage in sea sand concrete increased $10%{\sim}15%$ higher than measured when in river sand. The results of prediction of Rate of Drying Shrinkage by Response Surface Analysis are as fellows. The coefficient of correlation of Drying Shrinkage in concrete was over 90%.

  • Of the roughly four million known substances, about 60,000 are processed and sold ; many of these must be dried. Many materials are processed in the liquid state - ideal for mixing and reacting - but most products are needed or wanted as dry, or relatively dry, solids. Usually operation is just below atmospheric pressure, as with direct dryers, but some are built for vacuum operation with pressures as low as 26.66kPa abs.. In spite of the global-class aquiculture agriculture and fisheries technology of our country, the processing technologies are lags behind the other nations relatively. These problems are considered to be caused directly by the lack of drying technologies. This paper is concerned to the experimental results of drying heat transfer characteristics for the green energy type vacuum dryer for the high quality agriculture and fisheries production.

Development of a Rice Circulating Concurrent-flow Dryer(II) - Validation of Drying Simulation Model - (순환식 병류형 곡물건조기 개발(II) - 시뮬레이션모델의 검증 -)

  • This study was performed to develop a simulation model of circulating concurrent-flow rice dryer. The simulation model consists of drying model, tempering model and crack prediction model. The drying and tempering models were developed based on mathematical analysis, and the crack prediction model was developed by thin layer drying tests. Rice drying tests were done with three replications by use of a pilot scale dryer of holding capacity of 700 kg. Experimental values for moisture content, rice temperature, rice crack, and drying energy were compared with predicted values by simulation model. The RMSEs of predicted moisture contents were ranged from 0.5807% (d.b.) to 1.1951% (d.b.). and the coefficients of determination were 0.9688 to 0.9812. The RMSEs of predicted rice temperatures at the exit of the drying chamber were 1.83 to $3.81^{\circ}C$ and the coefficients of determination were 0.8834 to 0.9482. The results for moisture contents and rice temperatures showed very good relationships between predicted values and experimental values. The RMSEs of predicted value of crack ratio were 0.4082 to 0.7967% and the coefficients of determination were 0.8742 to 0.9547.

Volatile Retention during Freeze Drying of Fruit Juices (과실쥬스의 동결건조 중 휘발성분 보유력)

  • The headspace gas chromatographic(analytical) technique was used to evaluate the retention of volatiles in fruit juices during freeze drying as a function of freezing rate, the content of initial solid and chamber pressure. The effects of freezing rate and drying time on the volatile retention under the experimental conditions were marked, particulary at long freezing time. The retention of volatiles in the freeze dried was largely affected by the freezing rate. The highest volatile loss under the freeze drying conditions was observed during the first stage of drying. The behavior during freeze drying of the volatile substances was affected by high content of initial solid. The volatile retention was higher in quick freeze drying than slow freeze drying and low pressure than high.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the freeze drying process for poly ${\gamma}$ glutamic acid. The physical properties of poly ${\gamma}$ glutamic acid are measured during the freeze-drying process. The moisture contents of poly ${\gamma}$ glutamic acid according to the glass transient temperature are obtained by DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) analysis. The end point of primary drying for the poly ${\gamma}$ glutamic acid with a thickness of 3 mm is obtained by measuring the thickness of the dried layer, the amount of moisture evaporation, the moisture content, and the pressure in the drying vacuum chamber during the freeze-drying process. By considering the variation in the glass transient temperature with respect to the moisture content of the material, a control schedule for the heating plate temperature is suggested during the secondary drying process.

Analysis of a Continuous and Instantaneous Vacuum Drying System for Drying and Separation of Suspended Paricles in Waste Solvent (폐용제에 함유된 입자의 건조 및 분리용 연속식 순간 진공건조시스템 해석)

  • This study describes to analyze the characteristics for separation and recovery of both the dried particles and the purified solvent from the waste solvent through the vaporization process by the continuous and instantaneous vacuum drying system. The vacuum drying system for the waste solvents recovery consists of a feeding pump, a double pipe heat exchanger, a vacuum spray chamber, and a condenser. The vacuum drying system heats the waste solvent to the vapor in the double pipe heat exchanger and the expanded vapor is sprayed at the end of the tube. The vaporized solvent in the condenser are recovered. The particles in the waste solvent are separated and dried from the vapor in the vacuum spray chamber. Performance evaluation of the vacuum drying system was conducted using the mixture of the dried pigment particles and benzene or alkylbenzene as test samples. For the mixture of 10 wt% pigment particles an 90% benzene, the recovery efficiency of benzene was 88% with the purity of 99% and the recovery efficiency of dried particles was 94% with the moisture of 1.1 wt%. The size of pigment particles was decreased from $6.5\mu\textrm{m}$ to $5.6\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter due to high speed spraying and dispersion in the vacuum drying system during drying process. Therefore, the vacuum drying system showed to be an effective method for separating particles and solvent in the waste solvent.

  • The characteristics of heat energy distribution on the fire-proof clay with microwave heating drying are numerically investigated using finite element method. The modelled regular hexahedron chamber$(50cm\times50cm\times50cm)$ filled with air consists of vertical heat source and sink walls, a fire-proof clay model, and adiabatic plates on the top and bottom walls. With different geometrical aspect ratios of the fire-proof clay model, the heat energy distribution is throughly investigated. The model gave a good prediction of the microwave heating characteristics of fire-proof clay. The optimal shape of the fire-proof clay for given chamber geometry and microwave power is analyzed.

  • Fine particles of water-soluble pharmaceuticals were prepared using a new micronization method, Carbon Dioxide Assisted Nebulization in a Bubble Dryer(CAN-BD). The process utilized mixtures of CO$_2$ in aqueous solution at supercritical conditions to form an emulsion. The aerosols were dried with pre-heated nitrogen, and the drying chamber was operated at near atmospheric pressure. The dry particles were collected on membrane filter at the bottom of the drying chamber. Several processing parameters such as flow rate, temperature, pressure, solid concentration and processing scale were accessed using NaCl, human serum albumin, and granulocyte-colony stimulating factor as model pharmaceuticals.
