  • In order to investigate the treatment efficiency of pollutants in free water surface constructed wetlands (FWS CWs) with lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) cultivation pond, the experiment was consisted of two sites (site I and II) in Lake Juam, Korea. The sites were configured a lotus cultivation pond (with fertilizer application) - a dropwort bed - a reed bed for site I, and a lotus cultivation pond (without fertilizer application) - a dropwort bed - a reed bed for site II. Removal rate of COD in site I and II were 13.3% and 26.0%, respectively. Removal rate of total nitrogen (TN) was 29.7% for site I, and 36.3% for site II. Removal rate of total phosphorus (TP) in site I and II were 36.0% and 36.5%, respectively. COD, TN and TP in effluent from site I (with fertilizer) was higher than that in site II (without fertilizer), showing that COD, TN and TP in effluent were strongly influenced by fertilizer addition. Therefore, in order to satisfy established water-quality standards, the amount of fertilizer used in lotus cultivation showed be evaluated.

  • This research investigated the effect of photo/dark period and relative humidity during dark period on the growth and quality of water dropwort in a closed-type plant factory system. At 30 days after planting, the shoot fresh weight of water dropwort under relative humidity of 60/90%(light/dark) treatment significantly higher than that under relative humidity of 60/60% treatment. The shoot fresh weight of water dropwort increased by extending light period under relative humidity of 60/60% treatment, but 16/8h photo/dark period showed the best shoot fresh weight, followed by 20/4h and 22/2h under relative humidity of 60/90% treatment. In the relative humidity of 60/90% treatment, the tipburn occurrence was reduced under 16/8h photo/dark period condition as 1.4%, whereas it was significantly increased under 20/4h and 22/2h of relatively long light time duration as 15.5% and 30.3%, respectively. In the relative humidity of 60/60% treatment, the tipburn occurrence was 15.5% under 16/8h photo/dark period condition and those under 20/4h and 22/2h photo/dark period condition were higher than 25%. The stem hardness of water dropwort was lowest in relative humidity of 60/90% and 16/8h photo/dark period treatment. The mineral contents of leaves were decreased by extending light period, but the contents of Ca were not different significantly among the treatments except the 60/60% and 22/2h treatment.

  • The quality of fermented dropwort extract (FDE) and fermented dropwort vinegar (FDV) was assessed for free sugar, organic acid and free and total amino acid content. Major organic acids were lactic acid in FDE and acetic acid in FDV. Free sugars in FDE were fructose and glucose, and those in FDV were fructose, sucrose, and maltose. Aspartic acid was the major free amino acid in both FDE and FDV. Additionally, the main free amino acids in FDE were alanine and ${\gamma}$-amino-n-butyric acid (GABA), while those in FDV were arginine and valine. Moreover, to investigate the protective effects of FDE and FDV against oxidative stress induced by t-BHP and $H_2O_2$, C6 cells were treated with FDE or FDV prior to inducing the oxidative damage. FDE and FDV inhibited cell death significantly in a dose-dependent manner. These data imply that FDE and FDV may be effective in neuronal cell protection against oxidative damage.

  • We examined the chemical properties of leek and dropwort and prepared the noodles with the dried powder of them, to develope functional processing floods which contain biological active compounds. The groups were divided by the drying methods as follows: hot air drying at 50$\^{C}$ (A), hot air drying after blanching for 30 sec (B), hot air drying after steaming for 2 min (C) and freeze drying (D). We had analyzed the content of vitamin C, total chlorophyll, and phenolic compounds and measured the hunter color values of dried powders individually. The contents of evaluated compounds were higher in A and D than in B and C groups and also the electron donating activity of A and D was stronger than B and C. The cooking properties of noodles prepared with leek and dropwort powder were examined. After cooking, the weight and volume of noodles prepared with powder were lower than those of control The turbidity of noodle soup were increased as the adding ratio was increased. The cutting strength of cooked leek noodles with A and B powder was similar to that of control, in case of dropwort, cooked noodles with D showed similar to that of control. The cutting strength of cooked noodles were decreased as the adding ratio were increased. The electron donating activity of noodles with vegetable powders showed high than that of control The sensory evaluation showed that significant difference between noodles with 2.5 ?/e addition groups and control was not recognized but was recognized between noodles with 5% addition groups and the control.

  • This study evaluated the nutritional compositions of dropwort (Oenanthe javanica) extracts depending on the ethanol concentrations. Extractions were performed with hot water, 50% ethanol, 80% ethanol, and 95% ethanol for 4 hours. Changes in yield, as well as total carbohydrate, crude protein, crude fat, total dietary fiber, free sugar, and mineral (Na, Fe, and Ca) contents were investigated. The highest extraction yield of ethanol extracts was 44.67% in 50% ethanol extract of dropwort. Crude protein content reached a maximum of 6.70% while carbohydrate content was highest at 19.6%, in 50% ethanol extract of dropwort. Crude fat content irregularly increased according to ethanol concentration as compared with hot water extract. Total dietary fiber content decreased in ethanol extract, but these changes were not concentration-related. Total sugar contents were highest in hot water and 80% ethanol extracts. Vitamin A content of ethanol extract was higher than that of hot water extract. Mineral (Na, Ca, and Fe) contents were significantly reduced in ethanol extract according to concentration of ethanol, whereas mineral contents were higher in ethanol extract than in hot water extract. Based on this study, ethanol extract of dropwort is more efficient for development of desirable processed foods.

  • Two biological Certified Reference Materials (CRMs), KRISS 108-04-001 (oyster tissue) and 108-05-001 (water dropwort stem), were prepared by Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS)during FY '01. The certified values of these materials had been determined by Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometry (IDMS) for six elements (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb and Zn). Additional analytical works are now progressing to certify the concentrations of a number of the environmental and nutrimental elements in these CRMs. The certified values in a CRM are usually determined by using a single primary method with confirmation by other method(s) or using two independent critically-evaluated methods. Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) plays an important role in the determination of certified values as it can eliminate the possibility of common error sources resulting from sample dissolution. In this study INAA procedure was used in determination of 23 elements in these two biological CRMs to acquire the concentration information and the results were compared with KRISS certified values.

  • The present study was attempted to investigate the antioxidant capacity of popular yellow-green vegetable juices (kale, Angelica keishei, carrot, small water dropwort) and to investigate the effect of vegetable juices on protecting oxidative damage to DNA in cultured Chinese hamster lung (CHL) cells. Antioxidant capacity was analyzed by TRAP assay (Total radical-trapping antioxidant potential). Cellular DNA dmamage was measured by SCGE (single-cell gel electrophoresis, also known as comet assay. Cells incubated in medium with PBS (negative control) or with various concentration of the freeze dried green juices (25, 50, 100, 250 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$) resuspended in PBS were treated with $H_2O_2$ (200 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) as an oxidative stimulus for 5 min at 4$^{\circ}C$. The physiological function of each vegetable juice on oxidative DNA damage was analyzed and expressed as tail moment (tail length X percentage migrated DNA in tail) . Kale juice had the highest TRAP value suggesting that kale has the highest antioxidant capacity followed by Angelica keishei, small water dropwort and carrot. Cells treated with $H_2O_2$ had extensive DNA damage compared with cells treated with PBS or pre-treated with vegetable juice extracts. All green juices inhibited $H_2O_2$-induced DNA damage with kale being the most effective juice among the tested juices. These results indicate that green juice supplementation to CHL cells followed by oxidative stimulus inhibited damage to cellular DNA, supporting a protective effect against oxidative damage induced by reactive oxygen species. • Heavy metal contents and parasite egg examination for the safety evaluation of dropwort(Oenanthe javanica) from the inside of Chonnam province(5 regions) and suburbs of Kwang-ju(1 region) were investigated. The contents of heavy metals(Hg, Pb, As, Cd, Mn, Zn, Cu) were determined by the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer and parasite eggs were examined to various internalparasites(F. hepatica, C. sinesis, G. lamblia, Cryptosporidium, A. lumbricoides and A. duodenale). First, Hg and As were detected in trace level and $0.003{\sim}0.01\;ppm$. Pb was not detected in all samples and Cd contents of dropworts were detected $0.014{\sim}0.087\;ppm$. The contents of 4 kinds of heavy metals(Hg, As, Pb and Cd) in dropworts cultivated in various regions(6 regions) were not detected or trace levels. Therefore, dropworts cultivated in Chonnam province and suburbs of Kwang-ju were free from contamination of heavy metals. Moreover, the result of parasite egg examination(Trematoda, Protozoa and Nematoda) was not detected in all samples.
