  • As the combustion process of CWM consists of the water evaporation, the release and combustion of volatile matter, and the combustion of char for every particle, it is more complex than that of existent liquid fuel. Though the many studies on CWM combustion have been carried out by the single droplet using hanging methods or the multiple droplet using atomization methods, any report don't presents definite solution about the effects by the initial water evaporation and combustion of volatile. When CWM is suddenly exposed in the high temperature surroundings, the internal water evaporates and then each droplet builds up pores. Besides, porosity rate changes along the temperature of surroundings, the composition ratio of CWM, and the initial diameter of droplet. In result, because it affects the whole combustion rate, the combustion of CWM has complex mechanism as compared with the combustion of liquid or gas fuel. Therefore, concentrating on porous structure of CWM, this study has proceeded to acquire the basic data on the CWM injection combustion and closely examines the effects of the first stage combustion on the whole combustion by measuring the diameter variations, pore rate, mass fraction burned, and the internal temperature changes of CWM droplet. The results demonstrate that $60{\sim}70%$ of initial mass is reduced during water evaporation and volatile combustion period, and swelling rate, mass faction burned, and density variation are greatly concerned with atomization of CWM etc.

  • Currently, droplet protective screens (DPSs) are used to prevent the spread of respiratory diseases. As virus particles can maintain their infective in indoor environments, recent studies have investigated the risk of airborne transmission. However, the ability of DPSs to block airborne transmission has not been verified yet. In this study, the preventive ability of DPSs against droplet and airborne transmission was evaluated. Moreover, the effectiveness of a Portable air purifier (PAP) was investigated. According to results, in a simulated room where an infectious person spoke, the DPS blocked more than 90% of the micron-sized droplets (with a diameter larger than 1 ㎛) transmitted to the front of the infectious person. However, sub-micron droplets (with a diameter smaller than 1 ㎛) passed through the DPS and spread in a room. However, the PAP reduced the amount of both micron and sub-micron droplets transmitted to the front of the infectious person. When the PAP airflow direction was set from the DPS surface to the free space near the infectious person, improved prevention against droplet and airborne transmission was recorded. However, airborne transmission was accelerated when the PAP airflow direction was set from the free space to the DPS surface.

  • The effect of spray characteristics on desulfurization yield was evaluated by performing experiments with pilot spray drying sorber (SDS). Among the variables of operating conditions, the slurry-spraying conditions were chosen as major parameters; Stoichiometric ratio and Sauter mean diameter of slurry droplet were varied for the different gas temperatures and $SO_{2}$ concentrations in the inlet gas flow. From the experimental results, we proposed semi-empirical models of desulfurization yield for both Stoichiometric ratio and Sauter mean diameter of droplets. The optimal condition of spray can be determined based on these results, which might be applied to the design or scale-up of SDS systems.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of fuel spray in a diesel engine. In this paper, in order to obtain spray droplet size in a diesel engine, water was injected into the cylinder at room temperature and pressure by injection system. Spray droplet size was measured by liquid immersion technique with a lubricant used as an immersion liquid for spray water from injection nozzle. In this experiment, single hole type throttle nozzle are used at same operating conditions, which included opening pressure of nozzle, fuel delivery, and injection speed. Sauter mean diameter decrease with the increase of injection pressure and decrease in injection nozzle diameter. The rate of spray penetration increased with increasing injection pressure and diameter of injection nozzle at the constant spray conditions.

  • In this study, the effect of injection pressure on the column diameter and droplet velocity of liquid jet with the weakly turbulent Rayleigh-like breakup mode is experimentally studied using digital microscopic holography (DMH). The injection nozzle has the diameter of $50{\mu}m$ and injection pressure is varied from 0.1 to 0.4 MPa. When the micro liquid jet is injected into still air, the double-pulsed holograms was recorded on a CCD sensor and numerically reconstructed in order to obtain well focused images. In this study, the liquid column diameter from $50{\mu}m$ orifice nozzle is shown to be changed slightly but the droplet velocity is increased proportionally as the injection pressure is increased.

  • An experimental study was performed to understand spray characteristics of the V type rotating fuel nozzle with orifice diameters by using high speed rotational system. The experimental apparatus consist of a high speed rotational system, fuel injection system and acrylic case. The droplet size and velocity were measured by PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) and spray was visualized by using Nd-Yag laser-based flash photography. From the test results, droplet diameters are reduced with increasing orifice diameter and the optimum injection orifice diameter is 2.6 mm. When increasing orifice diameter over than 2.6 mm, droplet diameter is not decreased with increasing orifice diameter. This is due to the irregular distribution of the liquid sheet around the inner surface of injection orifice.

  • The spray combustion and spray cooling depends on droplet evaporation. So, evaporation model for spray has been requested and lots of investigation has been done and various reliable models have been developed also for last few decades. In the present study, One dimensional quasi-steady spherically symmetric droplet evaporation model for micro-gravity is developed. The gas phase was assumed as steady state and the thermophysical properties are calculated as a function of temperature, pressure and composition and the properties used in the model was validated by NIST web data and overall evaporation history results was compared with experimental results by Nomura and Qasim and gave satisfactory agreements. Through this model, diverse phenomenon was investigated, especially regarding the effects of ambient pressure and temperature. The effects of pressure for the droplet evaporation time were studied. The high pressure increased the droplet surface temperature and made effect on the evaporation time depend on atmospheric temperature. The role of the ambient temperature was investigated and explained. The basic investigation for the evaporation process according to variation of droplet diameter and surface temperature were also investigated and the well-known phenomena, like D-square-law, were reported, too.

  • The breakup behaviors of impinging droplet on a hot surface are studied experimentally. The droplets are produced by the dripping method and the breakup behaviors of liquid droplet are recorded by photographs. Experimental conditions are, droplet diameter di : 2.5, 3.2 [mm], weber number : $30{\sim}140$, surface temperature : $28^{\circ}C(room\;temperature){\sim}450^{\circ}C$. Water is used to liquid. As weber number of droplet increases, a liquid sheet, which is formed after the impingement on a hot surface, is disintergrated by the dynamical effect. But at low weber number, it has effected by thermodynamical effect. The breakup behaviors of droplet are divided into three patterns with weber number and surface temperature, non-disintegration, transition and disintegration region. Further, these boundary values are affected by the hot surface temperature and weber number. SMD of breakup droplets are calculated in according to surface temperatures and weber number. The minium SMD of breakup droplets are observed at weber number 65.49, temperature $250^{\circ}C$ and weber number 99.08, temperature $350^{\circ}C$.

  • The intermitternt and transient fuel spray have been investigated from the simultaneous measurement of droplet sizes and velocities by using Phase/Doppler Particle Analyzer(PDPA). Measurement have been done on the spray axis and at the edge of the spray near nozzle at various gas-to-liquid density ratios(.rho./sub g//.rho./sub l/) that ranges from those found in free atmospheric jets to conditions typical of diesel engines. Probability density distributions of the droplet size and velocity were obtained from raw data and mathematical probability density functions which can fit the experimental distribations were extracted using the principle of maximum likelihood. In the near nozzle region on the spray axis, droplet sizes ranged from the lower limit of the measurement system to the order of nozzle diameter for all (.rho./sub g/ /.rho./sub l/) and droplet sizes tended to be small on the spray edge. At the edge of spray, average droplet velocity peaked during needle opening and needle closing. The rms intensity is greatly incresed as the radial distance from the nozzle is increased. The probability density function which can best fit the physical breakage process such as breakup of fuel drops is exponecially decreasing log-hypebolic function with 4 parameters.

  • Using an inkjet printing process, we have investigated a droplet formation of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) near the orifice of a piezoelectric inkjet head. With an attempt to form the smallest droplet without any satellites, we have applied various waveforms such as the unipolar, bipolar, and M-shaped waveforms. It is found that the droplet velocity and volume vary depending sensitively on the waveform width and voltage. Of those, the M-shaped waveform is shown to provide the smallest droplet volume, followed by the bipolar and then unipolar waveforms. The droplet printed on a PET film roll by the M-shaped waveform has the diameter as small as 46.1 ㎛. It is likely that the second short unipolar in the M-shape waveform increases the droplet velocity gradient, rendering the droplet smaller.
