This study analyzed the socio-psychological process of adolescent drinking behaviors. A total 1,732 high school students in Pusan city were studied by the questionnaire from May to July, 1985. A structural model based on review of the literature was examined in order to test the following three hypotheses: (1) sociocultural and environmental impact on the adolescent belief system for drinking, on drinking situations, and on experiences of deviation, (2) relationships among adolescent belief system, drinking situations, and experiences of deviation, and (3) impact of antecedent variables on adolescent drinking levels. All hypotheses were supported by the data. The important outcomes were discussed as follows: 1. Because interpersonal factors were influential for the adolescent belief system concerning drinking, public drinking education through mass communication or drinking education in the curriculum were recommended. In addition to sex variables, friends' drinking and sibling's drinking were shown to have a positive impacts on drinking situations. Also, adolescent self-reported parents' views on drinking had significant effects. Because adolescent deviant experiences were generally affected by environmental factors, it is recommended that positive extra-curricular activities at both home and school should be investigated. 2. There were significant relationships among adolescent belief systems, drinking situations, and deviant experiences. However, adolescent drinking behaviors in supervised situations had weak correlations with their belif systems and deviant behaviors. 3. Adolescent drinking levels were remarkably influenced by drinking behaviors in unsupervised situations. Because it is difficult to control actual adolescent drinking behaviors in unsupervised situations, it is important to fortify their belief system with continuous education programs.
Purpose: This study was to investigate the relationships between drinking-related knowledge, attitude and drinking behaviors of 244 female nursing college students in G city. Methods: This is descriptive research design. Data were collected from September 27th to October 10th, 2010 after obtaining the informed consent from the participants and analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, scheffe' test and pearson's correlation coefficients. Results: The drinking-related knowledge scores were significant differences by grade and club activities. The drinking-related attitude scores were significant differences by source of income. Drinking behaviors were significant differences by school record and club activities. Regarding the relationships between variables, there was a positive relationship between drinking behaviors and drinking-related knowledge or attitude. Conclusion: The drinking-related knowledge score of freshmen or the students involved in club activities was the lowest, and the higher the drinking-related knowledge and attitude were, the higher the drinking behaviors were. Therefore, appropriate drinking prevention education need to be implemented to freshmen or in middle and high school repeatedly.
Purpose: Despite the high drinking rates and the complexity of drinking behaviors in adolescents, insufficient attention has been paid to their drinking patterns. Therefore, we aimed to identify patterns of adolescent drinking behaviors and factors predicting the distinct subgroups of adolescent drinking behaviors. Methods: We analyzed nationally representative secondary data obtained in 2017. Our final sample included 24,417 Korean adolescents who had consumed at least one glass of alcohol in their lifetime. To investigate patterns of drinking behaviors, we conducted a latent class analysis using nine alcohol-related characteristics, including alcohol consumption levels, solitary drinking, timing of drinking initiation, and negative consequences of drinking. Furthermore, we investigated differences in demographics, mental health status, and characteristics of substance use across the latent classes identified in our study. To do so, we used the PROC LCA with COVARIATES statement in the SAS software. Results: We identified three latent classes of drinking behaviors: current non-drinkers (CND), binge drinkers (BD), and problem drinkers (PD). Compared to the CND class, both BD and PD classes were strongly associated with higher academic year, lower academic performance, higher levels of stress, suicidal ideation, lifetime conventional or electronic cigarette use, and lifetime use of other drugs. Conclusion: Health professionals should develop and implement intervention strategies targeting individual subgroups of drinking behaviors to obtain better outcomes. In particular, health professionals should consider different characteristics across subgroups of adolescent drinking behaviors when developing the interventions, such as poor mental health status and other substance use among binge and problem drinkers.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to compare alcohol drinking behaviors between living alone and living together women in Korea. Methods: 6~7th National Heath and Nutrition Examination Survey(2013~2016) data were analyzed using SPSS statistics complex samples. 9,373 Korean Women, aged 19-65 years were included in this study. Among them, 560 participants(5.1%) was living alone women and analyzed between characteristics of drinking behaviors of living alone and living together women. Results: Adjusted confounding variables were analyzed and the risk of light drinking behavior was not significant between the groups. However the group of living alone women showed in higher risk of binge drinking(OR=1.57, 95%CI=1.19-2.07) than those of living together women. Conclusions: Living alone women were associated with binge drinking behaviors compared to living together women. Thus, living alone women are needed to concern on social behaviors including alcohol drinking.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Numerous studies have examined the relationship between drinking behaviors and metabolic syndrome (MetS) for adults, but these include very few studies for young adults. This study therefore undertook to investigate the association between drinking behaviors and components of MetS among adult drinkers aged 20-30 years. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Using the 2016-2018 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data, drinking behaviors of adults in the age group 20-30 years were divided into 4 groups: 1) group A, good drinking habits; 2) group B, frequent binge drinking but not frequent drinking; 3) group C, frequent drinking but not frequent binge drinking; 4) group D, frequent drinking and binge drinking. The association between MetS components and drinking behaviors was analyzed by applying multiple logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: We determined the prevalence risk compared to group A. In men, the prevalence risk of high triglyceride (TG) increased 2.051-fold in group C and 1.965-fold in group D. Moreover, in group D, the prevalence risk of low high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) increased 0.668-fold, high blood pressure (BP) increased 2.147-fold, and MetS increased 1.567-fold. In women, there was an increased prevalence risk of low HDL-C (0.353-fold) and MetS (3.438-fold) in group C, whereas group D showed increased prevalence risk of abdominal obesity (2.959-fold), high TG (1.824-fold, and low HDL-C (0.424-fold). CONCLUSIONS: Our study indicates that frequent drinking increases the risk of high TG, whereas frequent and binge drinking increases the risk of high TG, low HDL-C, high BP, and prevalence of MetS in men. In women, frequent drinking without binge drinking increases the risk of low HDL-C and MetS, whereas frequent and binge drinking increases the risk of abdominal obesity, high TG, and low HDL-C. We propose that improvements in the drinking behaviors can reduce the prevalence of MetS.
The purpose of this study was to identify relationships among peer pressure, parental supervision, alcohol expectancy and adolescent drinking behaviors between year 2001 and 2006. Three hundred high school students were given questionnaires each year on their drinking behavior. Findings of this study were; first, a adolescent drinking and the amount drinking has increased during the years. adolescent drinker ratio as adolescent drinkers were 91.3% in 2006 compared to 75.9% in 2001. The average drinking amounts were 40.82 units in 2006 and 24.9 units in 2001. Second, differences were found in adolescent drinking behaviors such as the amount of alcohol consumption, drinking frequency, & problem drinker ratio by gender, and grade. Male students over female students. Third, peer pressure, parental supervision, alcohol expectancy showed significant impacts on adolescent drinking behaviors through 2001 and 2006. Students who lack parental supervision with much higher drinking-related peer pressure along with a higher level of positive alcohol expectancy were observed to be heavy drinkers and problem drinkers. Especially, students who showed belief in alcohol's tension-relieving function and sociability function tended to over-drink, drink more frequently and as a result, experienced more drinking problems. Intervention strategies were discussed.
The purpose of this study was to determine the drinking behaviors and drinking problems of adult, mentally retarded persons over 18 years old. It was also investigated whether gender, age, and pattern of employment create different result of drinking behaviors and drinking problems, and the variables explaining drinking problems were analyzed. One hundred forty adults, mentally retarded persons were surveyed in Seoul and KyeongGi area. The major findings were as follows; The majority of respondents ($58.2\%$) reported that they had consumed alcohol beverages sometimes prior to their having been interviewed. The average age of respondents who had consumed alcohol was 26.4 years and average age of first-use of alcohol was 22 years. For consumption frequency, $39.2\%$ of respondents reported that they drink alcohol once a month. Average alcohol consumption per occasion was 1.5 cups, and $10.9\%$ of respondents answered more than 5 cups per occasion. Regarding problems associated with drinking, $16\%$ of respondent of AUDIT and $51.4\%$ of Family CAGE answered that their children have drinking-related problems. Men drink more than women and experience more alcohol problems. Supervised employment group was the group with the greatest prevalence for drinking. For the amount of drinking, gender and employment pattern showed significant differences. Drinking problems (AUDIT and Family CAGE) of adult, mentally retarded persons were influenced by age of first-use of alcohol, frequency of alcohol use, and alcohol consumption.
This study examined drinking status, knowledge regarding drinking, and drinking behaviors between non-risky drinking and risky drinking groups and found out the factors determining risky drinking. Data were collected from 355 college students in Gyeongbuk region by a self-administered questionnaire. T tests, ${\chi}^2$ tests and logistic regression analysis were conducted by SPSS Windows V.20.0. Almost 30% of the respondents were categorized as the risky drinking group. The respondents in the risky drinking group showed greater drinking frequency per month, subjective drinking quantity, frequency of resolution not to drinking per month, and drinking expenditure than the non-risky drinking group. There was no statistically significant difference in the percentage of correct answers for knowledge regarding drinking between non-risky drinking group and risky drinking group. However, the respondents in the risky drinking group showed more undesirable drinking behaviors than the non-risky drinking group. Finally, according to the result of logistic regression analysis of the factors determining risky drinking, monthly allowance, major, circle activity status, drinking frequency per month, drinking motive and drinking behaviors were significant.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the moderate drinking program based on social cognitive theory on changes in the drinking habits of college students with drinking problems. Methods: This study included a total of 68 college students with drinking problems. These participants participated in 10 sessions of a moderate drinking program in which social cognitive theory was applied. Changes in the cognition and behaviors of the participants were then investigated. Results: The moderate drinking program based on social cognitive theory for college students with drinking problems was effective in increasing the subjects' drinking-related knowledge (U=191.50, p<.001), enhancing their drinking refusal self-efficacy(t=8.02, p<.001), and changing their drinking-related attitudes (U=108.50, p<.001), drinking outcome expectancy (t=8.68, p<.001), amount of drinking in a single session ($x^2=25.72$, p<.001), number of drinking sessions per month ($x^2=10.05$, p=.006), and problem drinking behaviors (t=5.77, p<.001). Conclusion: These results can be used to inform a regular on-campus intervention programs for moderate drinking, and to implement education about moderate drinking, thereby increasing the success rate of drinking reduction.
Purpose: This study intended to identify personality factors and related problematic behaviors of adolescents who drink alcohol in order to provide basic data for developing nursing programs. Methods: The data were collected from October to December 2002 from 1.080 high school students in Seoul. The Revised Cloninger's Tri-dimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ) was used to measure their personalities. The alcohol expectancy was measured using the tool revised by Cho (1999) and stress levels were measure using a stress tool revised Cho (1998). The data were analyzed with SPSS Windows using Chi square test. independent t-test. and logistic regression analysis. Results: 1. The percentage of fathers who drank was 79.8%. mothers. 54.3%. and friends. 54.3%. The alcohol expectancy averaged 6.36 while the stress levels were 132.79. 2. It was found that there are significant differences (p<.001) in problematic drinking behaviors according to the following variables: second year high school students among all grade variables, more monthly pocket money for the amount of money variables, the group of students who smoked in the case of the variable related to smoking, spending more time using the Internet for the Internet use variable, and having friends who drink 65.6% for the friend variable. The alcohol expectancy scale of those students who showed problematic drinking behaviors was higher than that of those who did not. There are four family-related stress subscales, and there was a significant difference among them (p<.05). Among the personal characteristics, the group who displayed problematic drinking behaviors seeks new experiences and reward dependence more than the group who did not exhibit those behaviors, and there were significant differences between the two groups (p<.001). 3. When the socio-demographic and drinking-related factors were controlled, the tendency of seeking new experiences increased the risk of problematic behaviors 1.07 times (p<.05). Compared to the non smoking group, the smoking group was found to have a 5.06 time (p<.001) greater risk of displaying problematic drinking behaviors. In comparison with the non drinking group, the drinking group was also found to have a 5.31 time (p<.001) greater risk of exhibiting problematic drinking behaviors. The group with high alcohol expectancy scores was significantly different from the group with the no alcohol expectancy, showing a 1.26 time (p<.00l) greater risk of problematic drinking behaviors. Conclusions: Based on these results, the problematic drinking behaviors were connected with alcohol expectancies, friends and personality types. Therefore, we should develop an alcoholic prevention program for adolescence considering the above results.
